Funny thing about that. If you watch one of the special features from the disc, if I remember correctly, they mention that Jack stole that "nik nik" from a crew member. Some dude always did it when he drank, so Jack took it and used it in the movie, then said to the guy "after this movie comes out, every time you do it, people will think you copied it from the film" - or something to that affect.

I do agree. The atmosphere and technical merits were definitely good.

found that one to be way more "scary" than "annabelle" for example.

I just finished watching Macbeth. What a brilliant film. Even with the Shakespearean language, it was never boring. Lots of great scenes and wonderful acting from its two lead actors, Jon Finch and Francesca Annis. A good amount of violence though, but it was appropriate in terms of the story.

Just watched The Uninvited. Decent. I liked it better than The Innocents, but I still was underwhelmed.

Nice. What did you think of Listen Up, Philip? That Alex Ross Perry was the star of a Criterion cupboard video last week makes me hopeful for a Criterion release of the film (which I loved, top three of the year after the latest Godard and Dumont films).

Thanks for bringing it to our attention. I am seriously thinking about asking Santa for it.

The description pretty much sold me...

Speaking of which, Rhino really needs to release the series in HD.

I'd enjoy it, but Rhino's not even releasing the DVDs anymore, it's Eagle Rock or something, and their boxsets are pretty lacklustre in comparison to the original Rhino releases. I know it's the same transfers and special features, but the packaging is blech. The show would probably sell a lot in HD.

This is gonna be random, but Scottie you posted awhile back what Criterions have been reissued from digipack to Scanavo case. The 400 Blows reissue is in a Scanavo case now. I saw it in the case in person back in July at B&N. Just a bit of info for anyone's use.

Watching In the Mood for Love time and time again reminds me of how grateful I am for The Criterion Collection.

It is mind-boggling to think that almost three years ago I was incredibly ignorant to film. I remember posting that I disliked foreign films and what not despite having never seen one. Furthermore, all of my time was devoted to collecting rather than exploring how much is truly available to see. It's a total opposite for me now as a majority of my favorite films are actually foreign.

I could watch a film like In the Mood for Love daily. It is one of the most profound films to ever be made to the point that it continues to leave me speechless time and time again. I really cannot post anything substantive about it either. I will say that I truly enjoy seeing love lost and love found amongst such individuals who are vowing not to practice what they are preaching.

I've never seen it but I've been very interested in purchasing for a couple of years. Perhaps I will get it during the upcoming B&N sale.

Scottie, what is it about it that speaks to you so much? Anything that you can compare it to?

The film speaks so much about life and its many coincidences. On its surface, it seems like a tale of lost souls but it is far greater. Wong Kar-Wai really knows how to direct a film. He is able to transform the most claustrophobic interior shots, for example, into spaces riddled with isolation and loneliness.

I am not sure if you have seen Certified Copy, but there are definitely some similarities, especially towards the start when
[Show spoiler]one cannot decipher whether the actors are actually acting or they are conveying their true emotions to one another. It doesn't keep up for too long, but it certainly makes you wonder.

Not Criterion-related but last night I watched One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest again...what an amazing film.
