I'm psyched to see Michael Keaton in maybe one of his finest acting roles...plus he's from my city too (and had the same teacher in high school as me)...comeback time!

Watched the always awesome Eyes Without a Face tonight. Eerie and beautiful. Makes a great double feature with Island of Lost Souls.

I really want to see this - heard amazing things, was a bit worried it was all hype and will end up disappointed.

Does look and sound good though :P

Going to watch Repulsion tonight, in fact. I need some light entertainment.

Just haven't figured out what the second piece of the 2x feature will be.

Is anyone else keen on a review for Carl Theodor Dreyer's "Master of the House"? If I'm not mistaken, it's the only Criterion title that doesn't have a review here. I'm sure it isn't major league Dreyer, but it's still Dreyer so I'm surprised this title hasn't been given much attention.

I just came back from seeing Birdman. Holy guacamole. This was such an amazing movie...felt like one long take and the camera work was insanely remarkable and possibly groundbreaking. The acting was superlative and at times I didn't even know if the actors were really "acting" in their acting roles or just coming out of their acting characters which is ironic. Keaton and Norton were revelations... Watts and Stone were mind blowing. It all seemed so realistic at times like it was Cinéma vérité...or "super realism" as one Broadway critic pointed out in the film. The best part is, the actors were playing actors and even referring to real life actors in the film! (ie. Robert Downey Jr., Farrah Fawcett, Goldie Hawn, Marlon Brando, etc.).

The movie reminded me a bit of All That Jazz, the recent film I saw from Criterion, about how ego and fame affect people in the entertainment biz.

I'd seen it once at a classic film festival (and possibly also on TCM) before buying the Criterion disc, so it was not a blind buy for me. I had a friend over to watch it this summer on a double-bill with of all things BREAKING THE WAVES (both Danish directors doing character dramas). MASTER OF THE HOUSE is a good film, not a great one, a very dry, ironic comedy that many won't really find funny. It starts very slowly with annoying characters and events until things gradually start to happen to turn the tables on the domineering "master" of the house with a moderately (and dryly) amusing turn of events. It also stands as a rather interesting historical slice of middle-class life/culture from early 1920s northern Europe. Picture quality is also just pretty good, not as great as many Criterion silents, sometimes a bit soft with some regular flicker going on. I haven't gotten around to looking at the bonus features yet. Surprised any Criterion release has no official (or even user) review up yet. Fans of Scandinavian cinema should find it at least worth watching.

How'd that "light entertainment" go? Haha. It's very harrowing and creepy compared to the other three you guys mentioned. It's considerably ickier and more unsettling than anything else I can think of from the 60s (I haven't seen Peeping Tom yet).

A good double feature with it would be L'Eclisse! Both feature strangely disaffected gorgeous women that particularly don't like being touched. I really doubt anyone considers L'Eclisse to be a horror movie, though.

A really good modern retooling of the concept would be "May."

It went well. I think the first time I saw Repulsion was when I was something like 10 or 11. It really bothered me, but I didn't "get" a lot of it (obviously). I've seen it once or twice since, but not in this environment -- sitting in the dark, home by myself. It was as you say extremely creepy. As someone older, who picked up on far more of what was under the surface, it definitely was unsettling.

And Deneuve, what can you say? She's one of my favorites, and in this her performance just is uncanny.

I really liked a lot of what Polanski did, such as changing the depth of field to keep you confused and more "inside Carol's head." Also, it is so often claustrophobic, accomplishing the same thing. Just brilliant.

And the PQ is really beautiful. Lovely black and white, and shadows that are just gorgeous.

Now, I have to decide what to go with next.

very awesome. Going to watch Eyes today, maybe with Kuroneko.

I got Onibaba years ago and loved it, then Criterion released Kuroneko and just had to pick it up.

Damn you haha! How was it groundbreaking? I know it was taken and shot as though it was one long take, which I don't mind trickery, this is a film for god sake haha and I find long takes really draw you into the film and add that realism. I ask how it is groundbreaking as there are a couple films out there already that have been made with one entire shot.

Russian Ark is pretty famous, its one long take, no cheating and its got a HUGE cast, orchestras etc etc -

(want this in collection please!)

I love the cast and i've not seen anything with Emma Stone thats blown me away but just by trailers she looks so different. Has Watts ever given a bad performance? She was even good in King Kong! and man that film was poorly made at times!

I can't wait to see this film though, huge fan of the directors work and this looks so different and I find it exciting when directors branch out and try new things (Lars Von Trier for example!).

Have you seen Map To The Stars yet? its pretty weird at times but the acting throughout is top notch and the only thing that really let me down was a small bit of bad CGI lol - I really enjoyed it and Julianne Moor and Mia Wasikowska were incredible to watch.

Nice to see people discussing Birdman. I saw it a week ago, and still can't stop thinking about it. Keaton was brilliant, and Norton gave one of the funniest onscreen portrayals of an actor I've seen in a long while. Stone was incredibly impressive as well.

Great to see the camera work being one of the talking points of the film. Incredible stuff. Emmanuel Lubezki is such a genius. I could usually detect the cheats, but they are much smoother than say in Hitchcock's attempt in 1948's Rope, but amazing considering the film has to chronicle a passage of time of at least a month.

Also, can't stop thinking about Whiplash. Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons gave two of the best performances I've seen this year, and the film has perhaps the best ending I've seen of any film this year. Absolutely riveting.

My favorite film of the year still is Boyhood. Really want to see it again, but so frustrating that the Criterion release is likely a year or two away.
