I was underwhelmed by The Ice Storm when I saw it back in the day. I do not feel a need to purchase the movie as such, but I'd like to give it a second chance on Hulu or Netflix at some point.

I've seen most of Ang Lee's movies, but the only one that has really quickened my pulse is Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. I think that this one would make an excellent Criterion title.

I did like Lust, Caution okay, but it was missing something that would have made it a great movie instead of just a good movie.

I've seen The Ice Storm a couple of times now and it leaves me underwhelmed with each passing viewing. I'm not a big Ang Lee fan, but I do think Tobey Maguire and Christina Ricci are quite good in it.

Ang Lee is one of my favorite working directors.

Brokeback Mountain
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Sense and Sensibility
Lust, Caution
Eat Drink Man Woman
The Ice Storm

All films I love very much.

Life of Pi is pretty good too. It contains some truly wondrous moments.

That was an odd film for me. I remember hiring it when it was a new release at the video store, and I loved it. Kept it for a week and watched it 2, maybe 3 times. Really, really enjoyed it.

I didn't watch it again until about 2 years ago - and I could barely sit through it. Whatever captivated me the first time wasn't there some 10+ years later.

Not to say it's a fault of the film though. As with a lot of movies, the type of mood you're in really does dictate how you'll experience a film. Ang Lee's films are no exception to that rule.

The Ice Storm I watched once when it was a new release and loved it. Picked up the Criterion Blu-ray earlier this year, and loved it even more. Whilst I had forgotten most of the movie, everything came back to me as I watched it. I'm pretty sure the first time I saw it was what started my (completely healthy, non-creepy/stalkery) love of Christina Ricci. Also one of the handful of films I enjoy Tobey Maguire in (Cider House Rules, Wonder Boys, Pleasantville & Seabiscuit being the others).

Heck, I even enjoy Ang Lee's Hulk. There's a sensibility to it that you won't get in the current crop of comic book movies. It gets a lot of hate, but there's something about it that really worked for me.

That's lifted straight from the dictionary, word for word. For further clarification the Oxford dictionary has it defined as

"A film or piece of music that has been filmed or recorded again". The key word being again. A book being adapted for the first time is not a remake.

Let's not distract ourselves here - my objection is not to anything you've just expanded on, but to the use of the term REMAKE when describing a book to film adaptation, as per your initial suggestion. Re - "We" - I've never heard anyone ever use the term "remake" to describe a film that is an adaptation of anything that isn't a movie (or TV show).

Nor am I objecting to the idea that a film can be both a remake AND an adaptation. Of course one can be both. My issue lies solely with this abstract use of the term "Remake".
I see the problem: you've completely misread what I was saying.

I never said that a movie made from a book (or other non-film source) for the first time was a remake. I was saying that a movie made from a book (or whatever) a second time is a remake (of the movie that adapted it the first time).

Just to clarify, I'll use one of the examples I cited before:

Elmore Leonard writes the short story "Three-Ten to Yuma". A few years later, Delmer Daves makes a movie version of the story. This film is not a remake. Fifty years after that, James Mangold makes a new movie version of the story. This is a remake, because, as you say, it's "a film or piece of music that has been filmed or recorded again".

I'm a big fan of Ang Lee's films, but I must confess that The Ice Storm left me cold (no pun intended). It's my least favorite of his films.

To be frank, while I enjoyed the hell out of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, it didn't blow me away. Mostly because I've seen (before and after) better examples of the "flying swordsmen" genre. On the other hand, having Chow Yun-Fat, Michelle Yeoh, and Zhang Ziyi in one film...

My favorite films of Lee's would be The Wedding Banquet, Eat Drink Man Woman, and Sense & Sensibility, none of which are available on Blu-ray, unfortuntately. Oh, and Life of Pi. I also liked his Hulk far better than the later one.

It gets a lot of hate I think primarily from people who wanted to see two hours of "Hulk smash" action, and got two hours of cerebral "daddy issues". I was never much of a fan of the character in the comics, and the only time I ever really liked the comic was the period when Peter David was writing it and delved into psychological issues by treating the various different "versions" of the Hulk that existed over the years as multiple personality disorder. While Lee didn't use David's concept, he did present Banner as someone with severe problems due to a dysfunctional relationship with his father (which was kinda sorta in Lee's wheelhouse, given his first three films).

On the Ang Lee topic, I have to confess that its a yearly tradition for me to watch The Ice Storm in the month of November, especially closer to the time of Thanksgiving. So this is a film I enjoy and revisit every year (just like The Ten Commandments airs every year on ABC or some other network channel during the week of Easter/Passover or It's a Wonderful Life airs every Christmas on TV).

It's not scary, but I really, really, really love I Married a Witch. I could watch that film any time. In terms of scary, The Innocents is a great film.
I disagree about Rosemary's Baby. Yeah it starts out pretty tame but as it progresses toward the climax in the final act, things start unravelling at a dizzying speed - roughly, starting from the great "phone booth call" scene. I think Polanski did a great job capturing the claustrophobic, conspiratorial atmosphere in the film - I could almost feel the tangibly shrinking space around Mia Farrow's character. The 1978 remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers kinda works the same way too.
The Innocents is a really good film but nowhere near as great or "scary" as Rosemary's Baby imo.

Criterion's release is actually of an extended cut that further pads out the already lengthy "sitting in tents in the woods" section towards the middle; that could atrribute your distaste. I didn't need an extra thirteen minutes of that.

It's still good but I'd rather see the original cut.

Just saw Interstellar.

[Show spoiler]The score was incredible, and nothing like Hans Zimmers other work, and I loved it. The acting was superb and some of the visuals were incredible.

I don't know what to truly think of it, I need to see a few more times to take it all in some parts were incredible and worked really well with everything, but I feel there is something missing. This can not be compared to 2001, I don't know why someone did - I saw a lot of 2001 references which did distract me and annoy me at times, but this is no where near the level of 2001.

I'd say its worth a viewing and is enjoyable. Has some incredible moments worth remembering but for the life of me I can not say what is missing, I need to see again and see if fills the gap or improves it.

There are some really annoying cliche moments as well but I won't spoiler it anymore.

At times I was extremely overwhelmed and happy and other times I had to shrug it off.

Sorry its not Criterion related but was mentioned a lot here and I guess the link and comparisons to Kubrick, Tarkovsky etc make it relevant.

My writing sucks so apologies and I have so much to say but I struggle to put my thoughts down lol.

Also, why is the Score not out till 18th!? I need this NOW.

EDIT:

Seeing again in 30 mins ^^ its bugging em and need to see again just see if its better or worse on a second viewing lol.

Owl I think this is the first time I have had a differing opinion of a movie than you.. not that it's bad or wrong, just noticed it.

I liked Ice Storm a lot, especially my first viewing of the film. I guess it was due to the fact I was "really into" arthouse movies when it came out. That being said, the movie did hold up for me, and actually seemed like a bit of a different movie for me now than it did 17 years ago.. heck I was a very different person then.

Just nice to see that so many people can feel so differently about a movie.
