Haven't seen it on any list, but I'd recommend Babette's Feast, which was a wonderful surprise when I first saw it earlier this year. It's an excellent Thanksgiving movie.

My wish list for the B&N sale...

My Darling Clementine
La Dolce Vita
The Vanishing
The Shooting/Ride in the Whirlwind

And, as I usually do in these sales, I'll throw in an older release or two from my "maybe" list, which currently has 11 older releases on it... maybe Pale Flower, Purple Noon, or Insignificance...

This is the time of year when I plan on picking up maybe 2 titles and end up buying 10 or more. Love it!

I'm planning on being reasonable and only playing catch-up:

La Dolce Vita
Tati boxset
The Vanishing
It Happened One Night

Received It Happened One Night this morning. I've only ever seen it on VHS before now, and was recently sent a copy of the new book Frank Capra's Eastern Horizons to review, so I'm looking forward to enveloping myself in all things Capra over the next couple of weeks.

Fanny and Alexander
The Big Chill
Foreign Correspondent

and if I can afford:
Three Colors Trilogy
Thief

By the way, did they correct the error in Blanc?
If i get the set it would be with the corrected disc, right?

Also, how great it would be if the TV version of FAA was like the theatrical version in quality.. It's much inferior and I only will be watching the TV version!

The TV version is not bad at all. I've seen it on blu-ray about 4x and it's good.

yes, but in that comparison it looks bad.
The theatrical version has all the grain intact, and in the TV one it looks scrubbed.

It might have to do with the medium that was used to edit/bring together the TV version though.

Caps have their limitations. How does it look in motion? That's what counts.

I'd love to be able to pick up:

The Big Chill
Vengeance Is Mine
My Darling Clementine
F for Fake
La dolce vita
The Vanishing
The Shooting/Ride in the Whirlwind
It Happened One Night
L'avventura
Les Blank
and the Tati set for sure.

Then I'm all caught up again (minus most of the dual digis).

Aberdeen heh? I'll be in Dunblane and a few other locales in Scotland in 2016. Maybe I should just pick up all the titles you want and deliver them to you in person when we get there?

What do you mean...you don't want to wait that long?

(narrowing down my list for the sale)
Buy them both, they're 1/2 price.

Lang's World War II era movies are masterful, because of his own background as a German filmmaker. If you like Ministry of Fear, then you may enjoy Manhunt and Hangmen Also Die. Hangmen Also Die makes for a fine double feature with Melville's Army of Shadows, in fact.

I am going to try get Les Blank set as next purchase, don't know much about it and stuff, but I LOVE documentaries and never been let down by Criterion as of yet in terms of documentaries.

Plus it has a really nice packaging and lots to delve into!

Either that or the Criterion book, I haven't decided yet!

My copy of Howards End should be arriving at Criterion today, had my parents ship it from Kittery, ME for about 4 bucks and some change with tracking. That's a huge savings from if I had mailed it here.

As for the sale, here's my list. Bit more than what I planned because of shipping, customs, and I'm now playing the exchange, but oh well:

The Makioka Sisters
The Mikado
Beauty and the Beast
Ivan's Childhood
The Red Shoes
The Ministry of Fear
To Be or Not To Be
The Uninvited
Jacques Demy
La Dolce Vita
It Happened One Night
Tess
Macbeth

As for the combo packs, to annoy many, I usually just take my DVD copies out and give them away. Sorry to desecrate my sets, but I have no use for them. I do that with my non-Criterion combos too. Mom just bought Maleficent, and she's going to watch the Blu-ray, but then give it to me and keep the DVD.
What does tracking add to shipping costs? It'll probably cost me like six or seven Euro to ship my Sonopress discs to Criterion sans tracking. How much extra should I expect to spend for tracking. Also, how necessary is tracking? Is it worth paying double the cost?

Just wanted to comment on the whole “is it OCD?” thing…

Yes, as has been repeated: neat and orderly is one thing. I’m sure that nearly everyone’s collections are made up of discs that would qualify as “like new” if they were to be sold in the secondary market. Being overly concerned about minor scratches that might come about from normal use is not healthy. Worrying about cover art that has the circular impression of the disc embedded into it is not healthy.

As for OOP discs, what would pass as “like new” for Vivre sa Vie would pass as “like new” for Pierrot le Fou. Yes, the OOP titles are more valuable, but they are not museum pieces and they are not that rare at all, really.

My opinion is that (I know I'm not using this idiom correctly, but I think you'll follow what I'm trying to say) the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. I used to worry about things that I had no control over during my DVD collecting days. I also, like EPlay, have spent hours doing things that a normal human being could accomplish in mere minutes. I was never diagnosed with OCD, but believe me – that s**t wasn’t normal.

One last comment about my DVD collection… I have begun to unload a few titles on eBay. Knowing that I care for my collection as I do, I was certain that everything I own was in ‘like new’ condition. Wrong. Normal use (and I’m talking like 2 – 4 viewings and minor handling over the course of 10 – 15 years) will make a disc look… well… used. Surprise!

Ok.. one more ‘last’ thing… a bit of advice to anyone buying “like new” titles that are over 10 years old. Be skeptical. It simply isn’t possible to maintain “like new” discs that are that old.
