But I have to be honest, 3-4 years ago it was like, "oh sweet, I own an OOP Criterion", but after a while it just gets tedious. At this point, I'd happily forego the novelty of owning at least half a dozen bona fide collector's items just so proper editions of Pierrot Le Fou, Contempt, and Grand Illusion can be available for everyone.
Im not too sure really, most the films I'm dying to own, I already do - I think i'd know if i was gutted when/if the did announce one.

Would be sad to see films like 120 Days of Sodom, Hausu, Zatoichi go out of print

would be sad about the chaplin movies and kurosawa. they are my favorites in the criterion collection. and bergman of course !
but it would suck if a movie gos OOP that is only avaible by criterion at all. (or the only english friendly release)

it doesnt bother me that much to get a little inferiror version of a movie by a other label if it goes OOP by criterion.

I don't think I could ever muster up the courage to actually buy Salo. One viewing was enough for a lifetime, but it's a film you DO need to watch once in your life!

I think I too would be most disappointed to see Breathless go. It was a long time coming, and I think it's the film that sums Criterion and Janus up perfectly. The same could be said of The 400 Blows too.

They're alright. They seem to have more problems than most other companies, with their latest saga revolving around their recent release of Shivers (TIFF restored the wrong cut of the film, which Arrow then used for their Blu-ray, but no one noticed til it was on store shelves). They seem to have a problem with hitting deadlines too. That being said they've released some of my favourite discs in recent ties, and their The Long Goodbye is real 'best in class' fare.

Okay everyone, I took a calculated risk today by shipping my 'just about to start bronzing' copies of Walkabout and Pierrot Le Fou to Criterion from France with tracking and signature confirmation but had them send the replacements to my mother who lives in NYC, and I'll get them from her over the holiday. I'll be away for about three weeks over the holiday and shipping from France and also expecting them to ship the replacements to France before I leave for the holiday I think would have been a little ambitious.

The whole shipment with all the bells and whistles was less than I expected. I only wound up paying 8 Euro and change, which wasn't that bad really.

I ripped the two discs to my computer in the nick of time before playback was affected, so I could at least watch them in the meantime.

I just had to get the whole thing over with, since I've been in a somewhat pissy mood the past week or two. At-risk Pierrot Le Fou disc coupled with nicotine withdrawal equals not a good combination!

Philippe Garrel's early avant-garde work would make a good Eclipse set.

I'm not going to ship any of my potentially bronzing out of print Criterions (from 2010 with the IFPI # which matches the defective discs) anytime soon. I'll be real happy to hear though that Criterion ships out replacements discs for out of print titles, but until I know this is 100% true, I'm going to wait... probably until after the holidays are over so things might not get lost in the mail during the holiday chaos confusion.

Im waiting too, luckily I've got no problem but when I do it will be a while hopefully so will quiet down and I think Criterion will be quicker to reply and sort it out

If you're a fan of John Waters (and Divine!) I recommend the dvd Divine Trash. A documentary about John and Co. in his young and rebellious years. A fun watch.

I can understand your concern entirely, but I have the signature confirmation, and the replacements will be an inner city shipment, so I'm not too worried, and I figure I have nothing to lose by sending by Pierrot disc into the hands of the Criterion staff, but people have gotten e-mails from Mulvaney saying to send any of the seven in the list they posted, so I'm taking my chances.

Good luck so long as you have all the proof incase there are issues!

What proof do you mean? You mean like proof of purchase (i.e. packaging)?

You make it out to be as if I were Gus Fring entering the nursing home.
