Yeah, it makes my skin crawl a bit when people use 'DVD' as a generic term which includes blu-ray. It would be pretty mind-blowing for 4K restorations to be done on an Eclipse set. My assumption is it will be like all other current CC releases; both formats.

wow putting a 4k restoration on a DVD
i feel like 4k discs may fail if labels like Criterion keep sticking to DVD and Bluray releases. Dual Format was the best decision that they made.. should have keept it that way. maybe like this in 2-3 years DVD would have become obsolete to a point it could have been replaced with 4k discs for dual format releases by "Art" movie labels.

i would very much prefer to get "Eclipse sets" with some kind of SD or HD ready content in the future on a single bluray.

but thats just me dreaming.

I stopped by Barnes & Noble after my morning run, and picked up...

Macbeth
The Big Chill
La Dolce Vita
My Darling Clementine
The Shooting/Ride in the Whirlwind
The Golden Age of Television
(DVD)

A total cost of $115, so it's all good.

I'll go back for L'Avventura next week.

Sadly, my plastic case for The Golden Age of Television is torn across the sleeve, so I'll need to email Criterion to have it replaced. Looking forward to watching some good movies soon, though.

Sorry to spoil the party.
I don't see how a personal film - one telling of Malle's own childhood experience during the war could ever be described as "award bait 'prestige' fare."

Lacombe, Lucien is a fantastic character study about a boy who is looking to be somebody and makes some unfortunate decisions along the way. I don't recall much of a score pushing along the drama. It is quiet, slow, and almost painful to watch as the main character imposes his authoritative will on a young girl and her father. the end of the film
[Show spoiler]is artistic, haunting, and rather thought provoking.
in other words, NOT award bait!

Nice pick-up on The Golden Age of Television. I've always been interested in that one, but never think to check out B&N's DVD section whenever these sales come about (only the blurays). Making a note to myself for the next trip.

I bought mine from Scottie.. he was nice enough to send me both the digipack and the plastic case. I think the digipack looks great.

curious to know what part of it is objectionable.

Nice grab of films there. I keep thinking about getting The Big Chill, but as much as I have heard about it, I've never seen the film, so it'd be a blind buy. Picked up My Darling Clementine earlier this week myself, can't wait to sit down and enjoy it. As I have said before, just really started to appreciate westerns in the last 5-10 years. I also picked up 3:10 to Yuma this week. Going to have a nice western day soon.

They are quite different. One is about the trials and tribulations of a theater company staging plays under a regime of increasing censorship, the other is like being invited to a private viewing of a stage play rehearsal by a group of actors in a run down NYC theater. Vanya is very intimate in setting; we as the audience have great seats to watch a well-tuned rehearsal of a David Mamet adaptation of Chekhov's play Uncle Vanya.

The film opens to the sounds of a jazz score by the Joshua Redman Quartet as we see the actors arriving individually at the New Amsterdam Theater on 42nd Street in NYC. Among them are also a few specially invited guests who will be the audience for the rehearsal; the audience members are not actors but real people being themselves, including noted Indian cookbook author Mahdur Jaffrey. Through conversations among the guests and the crew, we are introduced to the theater where the rehearsal is being filmed. The New Amsterdam Theater was originally built in 1903 and once was home to the famous Ziegfeld Follies, before being turned into a movie palace prior to WWII. At the time of the filming of Vanya on 42nd Street, the New Amsterdam Theater had been abandoned and in a state of severe disrepair for about ten years. We see all this faded glory as the cast and crew set up the props and furniture on a recently installed temporary stage. When everything is ready, the guest settle into their seats, the actors take their positions on or off the stage, and the play begins.

I should point out that my repeatedly referring to the movie as a filmed rehearsal does not do it justice. There are no stops or do-overs or a director saying "I think you should stand here and say it like this". The flow is smooth and uninterrupted except at the end of an act, when the play's director tells the actors well done and let's take a short break before the next act. The rehearsal is not in preparation for an actual general audience opening (to my knowledge, this was never the intent of the ensemble and never happened). Rather, it is a continuation of a series of workshops held by famed experimental stage director Andre Gregory, who appears in the film as himself, where a group of actors participating in the workshops came together to perfect their craft and engage in a four-year project of intimate stage rehearsals of Mamet plays. The film Vanya on 42nd Street is the end result of their efforts, presented not as a full blown stage adaptation but instead as an intimate portrait for a small audience. Among the actors participating in the workshop are Wallace Shawn (The Princess Bride) who portrays Uncle Vanya, and Julianne Moore (Boogie Nights, Safe).

I really enjoy Vanya on 42nd Street and am so glad I gave it a chance. Ordinarily I might have passed on it based on what I read online about how the film is structured; it just didn't generate any excitement. However, it being a Louis Malle film, and his last, made me take the plunge. I was well rewarded by an extraordinary production, where the dialogue and acting are so good we are transported beyond the confinement of the stage with its simple props to a wider experience of a wonderfully human tale set in an upper middle class country estate in 19th Century Tsarist Russia.

EDIT: Criterion has a 3 Reasons video for Vanya:

Well, today was my (probably) one and only run to the B&N Criterion sale. I picked up:

La Dolce Vita

La Haine

Black Narcissus

Beauty And The Beast (Jean Cocteau)

The only one that I've seen from this haul is La Haine, so I'm excited to dig into these blind-buys.

Yeah - it was on my list, but when I saw that spine in person I thouhgt it'd look off.

Breathless does a similar thing but its not quite as bad amongst the already pretty unique-looking digipaks.

Good blind buy choices. Beauty and the Beast has some great effects. I still wonder how they did some them.

I watched Ingmar Bergman's Persona 2 nights ago and last night spent 3 hours watching all the supplements. This isn't an actual review but I just have to say that my interest in Bergman has now been rekindled. For the longest time I had been avoiding his films after not being able to relate to him, but Persona is one amazing psychological thriller as opposed to a surrealist film. I believe this film changed cinema history because of how it was edited and directed. Brilliant stuff.

The documentary in the supplements "Liv and Ingmar" is very touching and moving too with absolutely breathtaking cinematography. It's well worth watching if you want to hear actress Liv Ullmann's point of view on Bergman.

How can anyone complain about Catherine Deneuve's face on the spine of The Last Metro?

I have some complaints about the film, but none whatsoever about Deneuve's face appearing on anything.

I think Breathless one is fine too - just something annoys with about it on TLM, it doesn't even match the cover design XD

I think is she very beautiful, don't et me wrong haha! Just looks out of place on the spine, when it doesn't have any relationship with the cover XD
