I think the issue was never about digipacks by themselves. If Criterion had kept them similar in size and frequency of use to previous years, it would not have lead to complaints. But what Criterion did was give each digipack a dose of steroids and make them standard for almost every new release. These new versions were huge.

Criterion did come up with a solution of finally getting a three-disc plastic case, but then abandoned the whole dual format thing immediately after these rolled out. Their abandonment of dual format had less to do with complaints about packaging and more to do with DVD-buyers (institutional and individual) not appreciating the extra Blu-ray.
I don't think they were that big and tbh they looked good. Then again Godzilla is a digipak and quite small which is nice I suppose in a way, wonder why they didn't do it that size instead to make others happy?

But no, I love my digipaks so much and they stunning, and every release should have the same attention put into it. Why should Criterion decide which film is better than the other and which deserve better packaging/contents :P

That one scene (you know the one ) is genuinely frightening. So memorable.

For myself, I love Linklater but I didn't care for "Slacker". I saw it many years ago, so I cannot give details, but I know it didn't make an impression on me.

I love Black Narcissus. That one shot of Sister Ruth, still gives me the chills, and it's so beautifully done. I have yet to find a copy of the novel though.

Unfortunately, didn't watch it tonight as part of the movie night I just had with friends. We did watch a Criterion, which they picked out themselves because of the cover:

It was actually a blast to watch as a group with a little Gluvine (delicious Germanic style mulled red wine), even though I had just watched it recently. Can't say they loved it as much as I do, but they did like watching it because it was "so bad it's good and kept us watching."

And the consumers who didn't appreciate the extra DVDs too.

Funny how people today don't appreciate free things, because for them its at the expense of space. Same thing happened with the recent U2 iTunes release when millions of people went apeshit because they found a free U2 album on their iphones, so in other words it was like they got technologically violated and raped by some rich rock n' roll bastards. Maybe consumers don't like the fact that a company made a decision to include both formats on a release, and for them it was akin to getting violated with "things" they didn't need or want. Fandor Strikes Deal with Hulu to Stream Criterion Collection Classics (Exclusive)

Quote:
Under the new arrangement, Fandor subscribers will be able to view about 30 Criterion movies each month

Fandor, the subscription streaming service that specializes in indie films, has struck a deal with Hulu Plus that will allow Fandor to offer about 30 films per month from the prestigious Criterion Collection.

Since 2011, the Criterion Collection, which includes more than 800 films from master directors like Michelangelo Antonioni, Ingmar Bergman, John Cassavetes and Rainer Werner Fassbinder, have been available for streaming on an exclusive basis at Hulu Plus. Under the new arrangement, which began today, Fandor will offer seven Criterion titles each week, beginning each Tuesday; the titles will be offered in packages built around themes like "Expeditions," "Island Life" and "Family Troubles"; each package of seven films will be play on Fandor, commercial free, for a 12-day run. Some films will debut with extra content, such as audio commentaries by filmmakers and scholars, restored director's cuts, deleted scenes and documentaries.

The agreement was negotiated between Hulu's Griffin Gmelich and Fandor's Ted Hope and Jonathan Marlow. "I shared my envy with Griffin Gmelich that they had those films, and we hatched this idea," Hope, Fandor's CEO, explained. "Now the Fandor community has access to a group of titles for a 12-day period, and after that they'll be available on Hulu. It allows our members to get their feet wet and hopefully get turned on to these movies in the process."

Fandor has a library of 5,000 films, which are available for $10 a month on a monthly basis, or $7.50 a month with a year's membership.

"You spend so much money trying to market to disparate groups," Hope said of the rationale behind the deal. "We have to yell to a roomful of people expecting the few people who are our direct audience to respond. That's why it costs so much to market a movie. Yet if we had people already united around a common passion it'd be far more efficient. This deal with Hulu and Criterion validates the fact that Fandor is in fact that community, passionate film lovers who care deeply about all world cinema and aren't deterred by foreign language or the fact that a title may not be brand new in theaters this week. They're gathered for the smorgasbord of world cinema."

Criterion films are available both on the free, ad-supported Hulu.com and on its premium service Hulu Plus, where they stream ad-free and in HD.

The first month's schedule of Fandor's Criterion films follows:

Launch date: Nov. 11

Series: Expeditions

2. The Four Feathers (1939) dir. Zoltan Korda

I was watching the theatrical version of Patterns tonight which remains one of my favorite films. Outstanding performances by all. Interesting to see Beatrice Straight in an early role and compare it to her part in Network.

Is the golden age of television going out of print? It's OOS at both amazon and B&N.
Or does that just mean it's OOS and nothing more? I'd like to grab it during the B&N sale.

I had it on DVD in that beautiful digipack and was really disappointed when I upgraded and found it was a plastic case. Did they ever release a digipack version for the BD? At least it would match the Three Colours set then!

That's actually a good point. I still have the DigiPack DVD version. I have been upgrading various stuff and giving the DVD versions to the library. I figure they can use it, and I would love to have most of those films like Veronique that I love in BD versions.

But yeah, it's a tough question.

Ive seen a few people who have appreciated the extra 'free' DVD that comes with the bluray, a lot of people in Uk can't afford 2 bluray players from america, and some don't even have it so if you got a friend you can loan them the DVD< or watch the DVD in one room etc.

I don't see ANY complaints about MoC dual format, so why is it mainly with Criterion collectors?

I never understood the hate for the free U2 album, I dislike them, but it did't cost me anything and if I don't want it, I just won't listen to it lol.

I think people will complain for the sake of complaining and find anything wrong with it so they can do so. Which si selfish when it affects sales or causes a company to cut back when others really appreciate the dual format. Yeah it wa costing DVD collecors a little more, but then they have the bluray if they end up upgrading! and for what Criterion offer I wouldn't complain if they put prices up £10 now anyway! You get you money's worth with Criterion, well not so much now, but only cause they've had to cut back due to the above.

Seriously, if anyone at Criterion is reading this, i'd be happy to pay say $5 more per release just to have better packaging and booklets back lol.

Oh well! I can't speak for everyone, these are just my own opinions lol.

Ever since I saw TDLOV, it has felt like the fourth film in the trilogy :P, It could have been called 'Three Colours: Green' haha.

I don't think the bluray ever got the digipak, even The Spirit of the Beehive had a beautiful digipak (which I got, alongside the plastic case) and then they ditch that for the plastic case which looks cheaper and not as special.

>.>

I really wish Criterion offered a LIMITED STOCK of certain plastic case release as a digipak format, even if it costs more than standard replacement packs, it would keep up who love digipaks happy and Criterion can make some extra money and if they do limited stock they won't have stock left lying around collecting dust.

I want Antichrist in digipak the most haha.

So far this sale, I have picked up the following:
The Vanishing
The Secret of the Grain
Seconds
Investigation of a Citizen Beyond Suspicion
The Great Beauty
Purple Noon

Once L'Avventura is released, I will be picking that up. I can buy a few more but need to narrow down my list. Anybody else go in with a list and walk out with completely different titles?

Anyway, I want another Bergman, have Persona and Autumn Sonata and love both. Which one should I get next? Is it weird not to have The Seventh Seal? I always intend to buy it, and always decide to get something else.

Make sure you're looking at the right version. The digipack version is OOS but the new plastic case version should be in stock. The two versions have the same content but different packaging and different ASINs.

Seventh Seal is really good and comes with a movie about Bergman as a supplement (Bergman Island). if you look up the review here it gets 5 stars across the board. The other options are The Magician and Wild Strawberries on Blu. All of those movies are good, but very different.

Wild Strawberries is very good but very slow plot-wise. It does feature the director of The Phantom Carriage as the main protagonist, though.

The Magician has Max Von Sydow as the main protagonist (a magician) I think in the 19th century and the story moves quicker.

Look up the summaries to see what interests you more.

You can't go wrong with any of his Blus. I'd go with The Seventh Seal. It's not my favorite Bergman, but it's the one that comes to mind when I think of him.

... Or you could go with Fanny and Alexander (fitting for this time of year), Wild Strawberries, Summer with Monika, etc.

I'm not sure how you searched for it, but it seems to be in stock at B&N. ??
