I've watched three recent pickups from the b&n sale and highly recommend all 3. The Innocents for it's haunting atmosphere and cinematography. Macbeth for injecting some real life into what could've been a stagey Shakespeare adaptation. Finally, Sundays and Cybele was a real eye opener and terrific human drama.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: a Satoshi Kon Blu-ray collection set in the Criterion collection would be a perfect choice and it would make for one of their best releases.

Imagine a set with Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, and Paprika. Or even just the first three (as Paprika is already available). They could throw in Memories while they are at it (Kon wrote the first segment). A long booklet with essays and interviews, and some fine artwork displayed.

This would be a day-one purchase.

Definitely Gandahar!

Also Time Masters.

Angel's Egg would be great, although I don't think they would relase any anime ever!

They released Akira on laserdisc, so I wouldn't rule it out.

Some shorts collections would be great you don't get much better than Yuri Norstein, Frederic Back and Jiri Trnka to name a few.

Those books are freaking hilarious. I laugh at stuff in books all the time but the last time I laughed out loud so frequently while reading a book was probably Bored of the Rings back in high school.

The February titles look very nice (as usual). I'm particularly interested in Watership Down. Awesome to have an animate movie again.
On the topic of animated films, Waltz With Brashir would make a great Criterion release.

I would NEVER kill off Rosie Perez. Maybe because I have this love-hate relationship with the actress (she gets on my nerves, but oh how I wish to cuddle her), but I figured her as Tinkerbell would be perfect; they're both very stubborn and controlling.

With regard to book recommendations, I must also mention Akira Kurosawa's Something Like an Autobiography.

Great, great read.

That's the way I took it. Either way, thats what I intend. Next July at least the updated Ozu will be mine. *maniacal laugh*

Speaking of vinyl, how long has B&N been putting vinyl displays front-and-center in their media departments?

I'm guessing it's fairly new (and probably store-to-store what with some media departments being a lot bigger than others) but it kind of caught me off guard Sunday.

I couldn't decide if it was kind of cool or really desperate and needy.

B&N stores have been stocking vinyls for about a month now (even my store that barely has a media department has a collection of vinyls).

Hammett also goes without saying. I'd also recommend Cornell Woolrich (who also wrote as William Irish and George Hopley), David Goodis, Fredric Brown (generally better known for his SF, but he was actually more of a crime fiction writer), Jonathan Latimer, and (John) Ross Macdonald -- not to be confused with John D. MacDonald (but him, too).

On the lighter side, I highly recommend Craig Rice.

I should have mentioned in my earlier post that I recently read Dashiell Hammett's Red Harvest, The Maltese Falcon, and The Thin Man. (I guess that it did go without saying, but not on purpose.)
