I would also recommend Amour (2012). One of the most realistic depictions of love, marriage, and old age I have ever seen. Also very much heartbreaking at times as well.

Cosmopolis contains some of Cronenberg's absolute best dialogue. Really loved it upon first viewing, but the second viewing revealed so much more.

Also, Paul Giamatti is spot on. And, pretty awesome to see Juliette Binoche in a Cronenberg.

Enjoy.

Here are a couple of suggestions for you:

1. Bastards from Claire Denis (with White Material in the Criterion Collection). One of the top UK releases this year. Superb soundtrack from The Tindersticks.

Tindersticks - Low Life - YouTube

2. A Love Story a.k.a. Tied -- Top film from Hélène Fillières (Bastards), with beautiful Laetitia Casta. There is a German Blu-ray, but it is not English-friendly. Go for our U.S. DVD release. Excellent presentation.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...highlight=tied

Tied - Trailer - YouTube

3. Gaspar Noe's Enter the Void.

4. A really dark mind-bender from David Cronenberg. Fantastic release.

5. Two excellent films from one of America's true originals. It is very, very unfortunate that not a single one of his films is in the Criterion Collection:

(The second cannot be watched with kids).

6. Since we will be posting a review for The Shooting/Ride in the Whirlwind, see this film from director Hellman. It was on my 2011 Top 10 list here, though there was hardly any enthusiasm for it on the site. Anyhow, a superb film from a legendary director.

7. Fantastic though difficult to watch film from one of your own. With yet another outstanding performance by Peter Mullan.

8. One of my favorite releases this year. If you don't have it yet, order a copy. As always, great presentation from Cohen Media. (Not depressing, but very beautiful and plenty of raw emotions).

9. About as real/raw emotions as you can get on film without getting in some trouble. Beautiful, beautiful film, with a legendary soundtrack from Gabriel Yared. Your local release is uncut.

Betty Blue 01. Betty et Zorg - YouTube

10. Another fantastic film with plenty of raw emotions.

11. Very dark and disturbing. Further down the road from The Night Porter.

12. Absolutely fantastic film, also very dark and intense.

13. This Oscar entry was one of the year's best films. Very realistic, shot on the dangerous streets of Manila. Great, great score from Robin Foster.

Robin Foster feat. Dave Pen & Emiliana Torrini - Life and Death (Metro Manila OST) - YouTube

14. Another Oscar entry. If you like the Dardenne Brothers' raw style, don't miss it.

15. I will be posting a review for Stalingrad tomorrow so let's also recommend the other classic, Come and See:

16. This film definitely falls into the "raw" category you mentioned, but unfortunately there is no Blu-ray release for it yet.

17. And the obvious one:

18. Outstanding film from Bruno Dumont, but only a French Blu-ray release at the moment (not good for English speakers). Here's the U.S. DVD release. Hopefully, Criterion will get a couple of films from the box set in the collection so that people here can see them.

19. I cannot recommend this film highly enough. You will like it a lot. With a touch of Depeche Mode No Blu-ray release yet. Super performance from former Turkish/German adult star Sibel Kekilli.

Gegen die Wand [Head-On] Trailer (2004) - YouTube

20. On par with the best from Von Trier and Haneke, so it should be right up your alley. No Blu-ray for this film yet.

You should be able to find something you like here, Polaroid

Tyrannosaur was made in my hometown, so it's interesting to hear that it travelled so well. It's as bleak as they come too.

I'm sorry to hear this, but keep your chin up! There's loads of temporary Xmas employment opportunities around at the moment, so I'm sure you'll find something soon; get yourself on a stall down at Lincoln Xmas market!

Not Criterion-related but last night I got a chance to watch Tracks (2013) on Blu-ray and was really surprised by how much I liked it. Definitely one of the most beautifully shot and edited adventure-dramas I've seen in a while - the visuals of the Australian landscape are nothing short of stunning. Needless to say, the Blu-ray transfer is top-notch. Absolutely worth a watch if you're a fan of great cinematography.

Thanks Owl, I knew I had to be missing a thread somewhere. Appreciate the help!

Sorry to hear that Polaroid. You might be a little weird, but you seem like a good guy!

Speaking of emotional, depressing movies; have you heard of In The Bedroom? I think it might be right up your alley, and if you haven't seen it I can send it to you on DVD, free of charge. Just as a token from someone who's had a few bad days but is doing alright now!

I picked up Eraserhead, Breaking the Waves, and The Big Chill. All the last copies in my city B & N. Was going to get a Mr. Fox one but it was pretty bent up. Mine are in near mint condition with only minor and normal wear. I did notice a couple I wanted were a little beat up.

Kind of thinking about getting Solaris and Mr. Fox.

Does Solaris hold up today or is this something I should maybe lower my expectations for?

It's a very long and demanding film, however the themes it deals with are absolutely profound and timeless. That makes the film infinitely relevant imo.

Hang in there, my friend! I'll be sending good thoughts and positive energy your way. You know, I've been through some very dark and very long tunnels during my journey ... I'm sure we all have ... but eventually, I always glimpse a bit of light up ahead, and then I step out into the sunshine again. I'll be wishing the same for you.

As previously mentioned, the themes are timeless.

I also think it holds up better than most older sci-fi movies, because it never gets bogged down attempting to explain the advanced science involved. It is not without these types for explanations, but, instead of using them in an attempt to get the audience to buy into the fact that they are seeing the future--like many movie of this genre try to accomplish, it uses this jargon to further the themes and invoke philosophical musing.

If you like Nostalghia or The Sacrifice, you'll definitely get a lot from Solaris.

I would never suggest someone lower their standards when watching any Tarkovsky.
