The Lean set is excellent, and my favorites are actually THIS HAPPY BREED and IN WHICH WE SERVE, although I very much like BRIEF ENCOUNTER and BLITHE SPIRIT as well, just to a lesser degree as both seem more conventional and somewhat more dramatically forced than the first two.

As for Zatoichi, their similarities to each other are no more than any TV episodes in a series, which gradually develop and deepen the character a bit over the entire run while exploiting what audiences like best about it. The main difference from a TV show is that each of these is a full-length feature film instead of a 25-min. or 50-min. episode, giving a bit more room for plots and characters. On the B&N half-price sale with additional coupons and membership discounts, it's really a must-buy set if you have any interest in Samurai films. There's even one film where he meets Yojimbo, played by Toshiro Mifune! That means you absolutely need the Blu-ray editions of YOJIMBO/SANJURO to watch along with them. The SAMURAI trilogy is more thoughtful and leisurely, but gorgeous to look at and very good on its own.
You guys completely sold me on Zatoichi, bought it tonight! Thanks for taking the time to help me out, everyone. You guys also conpletely convinced me on the Noel Coward / David Lean set, so I may try to pick that up before the sale ends as well.

Sure, there's a chance. Somewhere in the same ballpark as me winning the Power Ball jackpot Saturday night.

It's owned by Warner, and David Lean isn't around to twist their corporate arm into licensing it to Criterion.

Just got back from seeing Interstellar in IMAX.

Can't even begin to get my head around this amazing but overambitious film from Christopher Nolan.

I mean, there were some amazing scenes but I felt a lot of 2010 and 2001 had influenced Nolan's film...especially 2010, because John Lithgow was in that movie and now in this one. Nolan had to be influenced by that film, esp. with the aero-braking and the spaceships spinning on gravity.

The movie, at times, also reminded me of Contact (which also starred Matthew McConaughey), but even that film had a more legible storyline. So, as cool as the science was in Interstellar, the story was a mess. If the Nolan brothers could have restrained themselves a bit more in the writing and not try to throw everything but the kitchen sink in there, this could have been a really good picture.

My brain was fried again as usual down at the cinema-plex.

My most wanted film for a Blu-ray release, from Criterion or anybody, is The Grey Fox, an awards winning Canadian film by the late Philip Borsos. I have seen it many times on VHS but it never got a DVD release. Even on VHS tape, the cinematography and atmosphere are striking; I can only imagine what the vistas of British Columbia and the magnificent steam trains so prominent in the film would look like in a Criterion high def presentation.

The film is outstanding on many levels, but most especially in the restrained performance of the wonderful Richard Farnsworth as a tough-as-nails gentlemanly stage coach robber who is trying to make sense of the early 20th Century after being released from decades in prison. It is both a great Western and a thoughtful look at old age.

Im dying for Nosferatu :P The steelbook looks stunning, but I'll end up getting that and the plastic haha.

I can't believe I went so long without collecting MoC lol, its soon cheap compared to Criterion.

I do like that they offer a HUGE selection that Criterion don't.

yeah. both labels work amazing together if you collect both.
its time you bring Arrow in the mix for some fun 80/90s horror and slasher movies.

i dont know if you have discovered Twilight Time yet but they got a few great releases as well that would fit perfectly in criterions line up.

and the UK has a few pretty good labels. there is not always the need to buy at your overpriced UK stores that charge 20GBP for a Criterion.

Thanks, not sure about Twilight, but will look into them , I have a lot of standard release son Bluray which are quite decent tbh - but they never feel as special as say Criterion or MoC.

I've had a look at Arrow and they have a great selection , I was surprised I had the Battle Royale on DVD, which everything, cost me £5 but on Ebay its £40+ lol.

I don't want to sell though D: lol

I have spotted a lot of Arrow and a few MoC at CEX (second hand shop in uk), so thats another bonus although they don't lower price much tbh

Arrows release of Battle Royal is pretty good. but i prefer the US release. the colors look much stronger. the UK release looks kinda "washed out" plus the US release has the second part and bonus features are in 720p instead of SD.

give Arrows Meiko Kaji movies (blind womens course and cat stray rock) a shot.
Lady snowblood as well.

Criterion doesnt have that much Movies of that kinda.
but they are probably not that interesstet in pickung up pinku and yakuza movies.

i wonder if Criterion will ever upgrade a bunch of their "horror" releases to bluray. they got a whole lot of them at Hulu.

Yah I have a few different releases of BR, none on blu though, so need to fix that! lol

I'll check those suggestion out too

I'd love Criterion to add more asian horrors/ghost stories to their collection, I adore asian cinema. Even film like Ringu or Ju-on etc, they have been so influential on so many films and they are so original. I am surprised Takeshii Mike isn't in collection, he just doesn't follow the rules and creates some EXTREME cinema.

I am surprised how Takeshii Mike managed to make a film with nechrophilia and worse stuff, extremely funny - which I know is SO wrong, but he did and you sit their finding yourself laughing at the situation and knowing its so wrong.

I think the company is Tartan, which releases some pretty awesome asian cinema, especially their extreme collection.

Criterion has some japanese movies that would be perfect for a upgrade.

- Kwaidan (i got the MoC DVD because of the longer cut)
- Cure (kioshi kurosawa
- Onibaba (MoC bluray is awesome of that one)

they have alot of very similar movies at hulu. plenty of Samurai movies as well.
glad Sword of Doom gets a upgrade. the Hulu stream looks already pretty strong.

MoC release is much darker. looks more like a theather play. i couldnt say that one is more correct than the other. but Criterion has more bonus features.
