Does anyone know if the Westchester films that Shout recently acquired will be going out OOP? Just wanna know if I should be getting the ones I want in this BN sale or if I can wait until the next one. thanks

Berlin Alexanderplatz is an amazing piece of work. And quite frankly, given the work needed to get it restored for the DVD release, I'm not quite convinced that it will be upgraded any time soon.

Myself, BA was the very first Criterion I bought from one of B&N's 50% off sales, even after I'd decided to only buy Blu-rays.

No one knows if anything of Criterion's will be going OOP until they actually announce it. And by then, it's usually within a month of it actually going OOP.

As for the Westchester films, it's still unknown how Shout's acquisition will affect Criterion's rights, for either the existing releases or possible future releases. For one thing, we don't know how long Criterion's rights will last for any of the titles, and I doubt that they'll get cut short by Shout's acquisition.

But more importantly, it's not clear from Shout's press release on the acquisition whether it'll even affect any Blu-ray or DVD rights to the films. The wording of the press release seems to suggest that Shout's interest in the films is only for digital platforms.

Quite frankly, I'm not worried about Criterion's rights going away anytime soon, so I'm not in a big hurry to snarf up the ones I don't have already. But there are no guarantees. As I always say when people ask about the likelihood of a given Twilight Time title selling out fast: if it's a film you really want, and you're concerned about not being able to get a copy down the road, then get it now. Even if it doesn't go OOP soon, you'll have a film you really want, and you won't have that OOP sword hanging over your head.

Don't say that cause I REALLY want it too, but only thing stopping me is if they ever did a bluray :P

Has anyone here seen The Magician by Bergman?

I bought it today at Barnes and Noble because they were all out of 8 1/2, but I'm not sure if I really want to keep it or not.

How does it compare to The Seventh Seal, Persona, Wild Strawberries in terms of acting/writing/story?

...is it one of Bergman's better films, or somewhere in the middle?

It does have a japanese bd, and this year they released 2 Fassbinder blu-rays so it could be in the pipeline to be upgraded. I bought it last year and it is awesome but I really can't stand DVDs anymore. The picture quality was rough

If you are new I would recommend to start elsewhere, personally. It's not a bad film but I'd rank it at the bottom of all those available on BD and DVD from Criterion .The Trilogy box set and Early Bergman are essential DVDs and I'd recommend Persona, Autumn Sonata, The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries and Fanny & Alexander as essential BDs.

The Magician is one of his weaker films, in my opinion, but I find it to be very enjoyable and refreshing.

I would saw if you liked the other three, you may want to check out Smiles of a Summer Night.

The first time I saw THE MAGICIAN was back in college when I'd seen only a couple of other Bergman films. At that time I thought it was just okay and rather heavy. Seeing it again after Criterion's Blu-ray came out a few years ago, after having seen most of Bergman's films, I liked it much better and suddenly realized it was much more of a comedy than I remembered. It does make good viewing after already seeing at least SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT, THE SEVENTH SEAL, and maybe WILD STRAWBERRIES or SUMMER INTERLUDE before hand. In fact, having just watched the Blu-rays of WILD STRAWBERRIES and PERSONA just last week, maybe it's time for me to revisit THE MAGICIAN again soon.

Is Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Project worth the blind buy? i'm thinking on using the 30% coupon with it.

Good info! I'm guessing the Japanese release doesn't have English subs (not that I'm going to drop $300 on it even if it does).

Nope. Hopefully one day we'll see it on an english friendly blu, honestly I'd rather they upgrade the BRD trilogy first though

Yeah, I did not expect to laugh as much as I did during The Magician. It was actually the first non-depressing film I saw from him and I did not know if I was reading it properly.

If you are interested in seeing obscure films from around the world, then go for it. I thought some one them were rather interesting, but nothing I would revisit. Are there any other box sets you are contemplating?

BA is one of my favorite films and Criterion's best release IMO. But I'm a Fassbinder fan so......

I would recommend Jacques Demy, without a doubt. One of the best sets released!
