Although if all you want is the housemaid, hurry up and order this. You even get a commentary by park chan-wook.

Obscure is probably the wrong word, but I honestly did not know that. They do seem to be the most popular films from those portions of the world.

They are very limited stock and once they are gone they are made OOP so price goes up loads on eBay.

I have their older companies Melancholia, which i've seen go for £200+, can't find anywhere now though, also the CEO sent me The Tree of Life which is very rare from that company too ^^

They do a lot of digipak style, but they are so high quality, better than Criterion's.

I'm not sad since I always just assumed that that was the case.

Oh god when you put it that way haha!

But tbh, when he was depressed he made one of my favourite pieces of cinema, so its tricky.. I want him to suffer a little longer, then be happy I was excited about his 'Scary film' and his TV series he was going to do....

My pick at the film club tonight so I decided on The Gold Rush. All I need to decide now is which version to watch.

I am leaning towards the 1925 original as I do like to watch originals first. I have also read (as I did research for my Intro) that some found the narration on the 1942 remake to be slightly off-putting)

Thoughts please from those who have watched both versions?

I'd choose the version which is closest to what the director intended/wanted really.

Or do both bad to back and then you can discuss the changes and compare them :P

Well they say the 1942 version was the one Chaplin endorsed but I will go with the original first. I always watch the Extras so will follow with the 1942 version tomorrow (or later tonight if the Habs are playing kak)

Light Sleeper is almost a 90's version of a film such as Taxi Driver, complete with an ending you really didn't see coming. I have to admit that I've only seen a handful of Schrader films, but he was featured prominently in the Talking with Ozu documentary on the supplements in Tokyo Story, which I recently viewed. I also just watched Paul Schrader's splendid interview in the Persona supplements as well.

Has anyone purchased or seen Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters? This is the only official Schrader film in the Criterion catalog, aside from his writing credits in Scorcese's The Last Temptation of Christ.

I LOOOOOOVE MISHIMA. Awaiting upgrade (so if you buy then that will be sooner as they are waiting for stock to go down I believe).

Philip Glass' score is mind-blowing, so full of emotion and beauty.

Hey! You gotta support us and make the purchase like everyone else :P haha!

This will be incredible on Bluray, I just hope they keep the packaging the same as it so beautiful, a plastic case would not do it justice, and opening the package really puts you in the mood of the film.

1925 version. I much prefer the original silent film to the later attempt to update it by adding sound and narration.

Anyone here seen Insomnia, the Swedish on Criterion?

How high would you rate it on a scale from 1-10?

Better than the American remake?

...dramatically better?

I hope it's dramatically better because I was talked into blind buying it this afternoon by someone who raved about it and told me that if I enjoyed the American version, that I would absolutely love the Swedish original!
