i quess they didnt really think about that people 60 years later might enjoy these movies as classics. thats only a quess. and the tropical weather in most asian countrys and the lack of "vaults" like warner brothers has for example. the time during war / after war didnt probably help as well. plenty of asian movies are "lost"... or survive only in really bad condition. |

Yes a perfectly restored film looks stunning, but sometimes it is nice to have the odd flaw :P |

I'm going to have to give Y Tu Mamá También a second chance. My first viewing was disappointing. I bought the unrated DVD as a blind buy when it was first released, knowing nothing about the film, and I ended up anticipating two of the major plot twists about 10 or 15 minutes into the film. At the end, when it turned out my predictions were correct, I felt sort of "cheated".
Maybe enough time has passed that I can go back with a fresh set of expectations and reappraise the film, based not on the plot but on the performances and the production values instead. |

Anyone know if Criterion still exchanges defective discs? Or was that a one-time thing? My Howards End is browning and how would I know if they will replace that since it's OOP?
Also, to anyone who mailed theirs in; how did you package it and did you leave a note inside? I was thinking of using one of those hard cardboard envelopes. http://www.criterion.com/current/pos...efective-discs |

Watched The Gold Rush last night. What an utter delight. My first Chaplin (long overdue), and just a total delight. Some of the effects and shots they pulled off are stunningly impressive for the time too.
And the Criterion release, with both versions is just a great example of the work Criterion do. |

I stuck mine in a paper sleeve with my Canadian address on it, and my parents put it in a USPS mailer when they were on vacation. Criterion shipped it back in a small cardboard mailer that was big enough to hold the disc, and didn't give me back my sleeve. Meh, no biggie. I watched the disc yesterday and it worked fine. It took me about 20 calendar days to receive my replacement from date of shipping it to Criterion. |

There ain't much "sweet" about Demy. The two technicolor aping movies in the set are almost satirical in their aesthetic, with some pretty dark themes hidden behind the bright visuals. I actually think UMBRELLAS is one of the great tragedies of the New Wave era.

His films may look like they were filmed with cotton candy, but there is melancholy there. The first four films in the set are all perfect/near perfect. The last two have a big dip in quality, but still worth watching.

2014 has been a superb year for US boutique labels and blu-ray from the little guys and 2015 is shaping up even better, especially with Arrow entering the market with an exciting lineup and the first Jacques Rivette title on blu-ray in the US from Kino, an honor I expected Criterion to take. It's going to be a pricy year.

So, I watched Jean Cocteau's Beauty & the Beast for the first time last night, and I absolutely loved it.
Given my reaction to that film, I should probably also pick up Cocteau's Orpheus before the end of the B&N sale, right? |

What do you guys think about the replay value of Marketa Lazarova? I'm a little undecided 'cause it's a blind buy.
