YES YES YES

It has so much replay value imo!

You won't 'get it' on first viewing and thats not bad, you don't need to understand it first time, just enjoy the incredible cinematography and film making!

It requires so many revisits for its beauty and understanding, its an INCrEDIBLE piece of cinema and its mind blowing! I would never have discovered this gem without Criterion!

Seriously if you have the patients its so worth it! There is so much to take form this and its just mind-blowing!

I adore it and its its one of my fave blind buys!

Snap. Which version did you watch first? I watched the 1925 one and I'm watching 1942 now then the Extras.

I also just watched Paul Schrader's splendid interview in the Persona supplements as well.

Has anyone purchased or seen Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters? This is the only official Schrader film in the Criterion catalog, aside from his writing credits in Scorcese's The Last Temptation of Christ.
Purchased when it first came out and awaiting a upgrade.

I thought some of the numbers in 3D were awesome and the others were good to OK.

Aren't you confusing this with Red River? That's the release that has the two versions and the original novel (and the DVD version).

I went to B&N today for my final mini haul... bought Kurosawa's High and Low after much reluctance. I sure hope this is a good blind buy. I was able to use the 30% coupon again. This makes it 4 times on 4 separate purchases.

High and Low is an outstanding movie, and it's one of the most gripping titles in the Criterion queue.

I intended to watch my copy of L'Avventura today, and had been planning to do so all week. Instead, I made the spontaneous decision to watch a double feature of the Kino Lorber titles, White Lightning and Gator, earlier today, and I'm about to watch a double feature of Every Which Way But Loose and Any Which Way You Can. This is probably why rednecks like me should not be allowed to own Blu-ray players.

That was my blind buy for my final one, too! It was actually recommended to me by a guy I saw pick up a couple of Fellini movies, so I figured his taste in movies couldn't be too bad Worst case scenario, I spent $15.32 on an "average" Kurosawa movie, which is still miles above most directors' best.

High and Low is also a rare instance where the film is so much better than the source novel. Kurosawa makes Kingo far more sympathetic and human.

And I just ordered My Darling Clementine with the B&N cyber Monday coupon. I'm spent for this sale.

With my purchase of the Drunken Angel dvd this morning, I now own all 30 Kurosawa films (plus a few odds and ends).

So good news! Expect a ton of Kurosawa upgrades from Criterion this year!

I've always felt that it never grabbed me either. I know many love it but I was really bored by the movie. The movie may have always been built up too much by others. I guess that is why I can watch the US remake and think the same about it. Neither are masterpeices just decent entertainment.

Drunken Angel is a great Japanese film noir. I'd love to see Criterion upgrade this one to Blu-ray, so thanks for taking one for the team.

That's another great film noir, in the form of a Hamlet adaptation.

I want Stray Dog more than anything, but I hope that Drunken Angel and The Bad Sleep Well are soon to follow. This is all just speculation, though.

Nah Orpheus I wasn't really feeling. Beauty and the Beast is way better IMO.

Though Black Orpheus (totally different film) is fantastic!

This. I hopefully got Beauty and the Beast today, and own Black Orpheus already. The supplements on Black Orpheus are fantastic too.

EDIT: Alas, no Beauty and the Beast, but I did Get my copies of Demy, La Dolce Vita, Macbeth, Tess, red shoes, Ivan's childhood, and makioka sisters
