The last few days, it had been very slow in responding during non-peak hours. I thought it might've been my laptop, but CPU usage was normal, and I wasn't having problems with any other site.

I ended up buying The Complete Jean Vigo with my 25% coupon! Got it for $14.99 with a dollar or so tax on there. Pretty good for my last purchase!

So I took advantage of B&N's Criterion sale along with the 30% off coupon to get the Zatoichi set. $80 (including tax) was too good a deal to pass up. I'm sure I'm going to enjoy the movies. Are they bloody? I know they're older, but even Yojimbo and Sanjuro had some arterial spraying. It's not like blood is necessary for a good action film, I was just wondering.

Excellent. Have you seen L'Atalante before? I'm not huge on the short films in the set but that movie is worth it's weight in gold.

(It was the 1962 survey.) Still, I was torn between The Complete Jean Vigo and Sundays and Cybele ... I only chose the Vigo set because it's been around longer and I figured it was more likely to go OOP before the next sale.

You've not only affirmed my choice, but have made me more eager than ever to watch the four treasures on this disc. Merci!
Awesome! I really hope you enjoy it.

"Just when I thought I was out... They pull me back in."

I used the Cyber Monday 25% off coupon to buy Roman Polanski's Cul-De-Sac on the last day of the sale.

I've got all of the other Roman Polanski Criterion Blu-rays, and I've had a hankering to check this one out.

Also, my Nikkatsu Noir Eclipse DVD set arrived in the mail today. Woo hoo!

Plenty of swordplay but very mild on blood/gore.

BUT WAIT... it might not be my final one because of the 25% Cyber Monday coupon I just received earlier today.

So what title should I use it on? hmmmm... I'm thinking either The Complete Jean Vigo or F for Fake.

It was almost 'Kagemusha' for me. When Kurosawa started using color, it added another dimension to his films that he was already familiar with through his painting. 'Dreams' and 'Ran' are two of the most beautiful films I've ever seen, so although I've never watched it, I thought 'Kagemusha' would be along the same lines visually. After I picked it up, another guy shopping saw it, and we got in a conversation about which Kurosawa films we had seen.

He suggested that 'Kagemusha' was good, but thought the pace and plot of 'High and Low' kept his attention better. Plus, it has Mifune

I caved and purchased Y tu mamá también, totaling $16. This'll probably be my last Criterion purchase until the next B&N sale. I spent much more than I intended, as I'm sure most of us did.

My final haul (if you can call it that):

Seven Samurai
The Long Day Closes
L'avventura
The Darjeeling Limited
Wings of Desire
Y tu mamá también

My take from this most recent sale:

I started out with My Darling Clementine and Design For Living, then picked up It Happened One Night when it came out in the middle of the month. I thought I was through for the sale, but then came two more snail-mail coupons and then the Black Friday sale. So, I yielded slightly to temptation, picking up a double dose of '50s paranoia with Bigger Than Life and Kiss Me, Deadly. I never did use the Cyber Monday code, and I still have one 20% coupon that is good until the 24th.

It was hard for me not to buy more, but I have to start buying presents for other people now.

I love this set. You have some great viewing ahead. I really enjoyed the rendering of the characters in L’Atalante, and it offers a view of France, of Paris in particular, that was something of a fad at the time but that is pretty much unavailable to viewers now. Zéro de conduite has wonderful modulation of tone; a lot of it feels like 400 Blows, and then it does something, er, unexpected and really delightful. And I liked Ŕ propos de Nice, too. It's a short, period, avant garde piece, but there's a lot of fun and wit in it. I'd seen the shorts in Kino's Avant Garde - Experimental Cinema of the 1920s & 1930s when I saw the Vigo, so it was easy to see where he was coming from, but it might be a bit of a stretch without that or something similar. I remember one Vigo film I didn't really care for in the set.....about a swimmer....but it's good to have it, I guess. I understood more where that Vigo was coming from after I went through Criterion's Jean Painlevé set, Science Is Fiction, but that Vigo is still more a curiosity than anything else.

It's a great set. I revisit mine often, and I think you'll enjoy it.

I have not seen any of Vigo's work yet! I read quite a bit about it lately and cannot wait to watch this seminal film.

Thank you for your thoughts and knowledge on Vigo. This should have been my first purchase during this sale but... I saved the best for last.

Nice. I bought that Polanski film a few years ago and consider it to be pretty good, even though its one of his lesser known movies. I found the characters to be bizarre in the film from my recollection. It wasn't boring. But then again, I've never watched a boring film from Roman Polanski. He's a living legend, regardless of what some people think of him.

Guess what? I still haven't opened up my copy of Kagemusha! It's a movie I need to get around to seeing. In fact, I now have 3 Kurosawa films I need to get around to so I'm going to plan out a Kurosawa week pretty soon. I have the original Warner out of print Dreams DVD and its an amazing film, esp. seeing Scorcese in it.

Not too bad.
