Oh no it's not. I've tracked for many shipmeents the time it's taking to reach me once it's shipped. With eBay it takes 9 days, amazon 13 and B&N 21. And nobody except B&N has shipments taking up to 45 days to reach me.

i had already many cases with amazon.com / BIOH / importcds / deepdiscount / B&N and many asian shops that made me wait 4-8 weeks for a delivery.. and everytime i waited that long customs did ask me after 3-4 weeks for a invoice...

my recent order of twilight times the blob took 4 weeks as well (customs asked for a invoice after 3,5 weeks)

10 weeks was the longest time i waited so far for a order from ebay (usa)

even zavvi already managed to make we wait 4 weeks for a order (again cutsoms office involved)

The Edge of Heaven is one remarkable piece of cinema that has an amazing 3rd act and ending. Akin's films have fantastic endings I have to say and I found myself emotionally devastated at one point towards the end. Tears streamed out of my eyes and if a movie can do that to a man, I'd say its a damn good movie. It's too bad this film isn't on blu-ray either.

If you're a fan of Krzysztof Kieslowski, be sure to check this one out. It's Akin's best film in my opinion (better than Head-On, yes.)
I mentioned this one many many pages back, I think. I really enjoyed the film. It really does need a blu-ray release. It won the screenplay award at Cannes. The final shot of the film was great stuff.

Wow. I was not really familiar with Akin's work, but from everything said here I'm definitely going to search it out.

No real rumors, but I've been thinking/hoping that Criterion picked up the Lone Wolf and Cub movies when they licensed the 6 or 7 Toho Zatoichis.

In fact, Criterion has the Hanzo the Razor films, so a Toho/Katsu Productions Kauzou Koike adaptation box set consisting of both the three Hanzo films and the six Lone Wolf and Cub film would be possible (and totally rad.)

Oh I know. I'm not expecting to get announce on the 15th, but eventually it will happen. Hopefully.

Yes, and yes! I wasn't familiar at all with Mr. Akin and now I've seen 2 solid films he's made. I think he made a new film in 2014 called The Cut, a historical drama about the Armenian genocide but I've read mixed reviews about it. I still plan on finding his 2010 film Soul Kitchen, which looks funny.

Not sure if this has been brought up in past but just wondering if anyone has any 'Criterion' related tattoos? Like stuff from the films they have in collection or even the artwork used for the films? Just curious

I know they have this page on their Facebook:

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...6820564&type=3

Heres my contribution!

Absolutely love the imagery of seahorses and they fascinate me - and I adore the Science is Fiction set!

The fact that you mentioned Kieslowski totally sold me.

I don't, no. I don't have any tats at all.*

But honestly, if Criterion ever manages to come out with Mulholland Dr., I may very well be tempted!

It's beautiful. Really.

But I'll believe it when I actually have it in my grubby little hands.

This is one release I've ceased to be optimistic about. When I have it, when I put it in the Blu-Ray player, and when the movie actually starts ... then, and ONLY then will I celebrate.

I adore the music Lynch uses, and how he uses it, my favourite HAS to be:

Two amazing scenes, and I really think that the one from Mulholland Dr. is one of the most powerful scenes in ALL of film. Seriously. I remember seeing that film with my best friend, in LA, when it was released. It was a long time ago, but I am 98% positive that we didn't speak -- either of us -- for about 10 minutes after walking out out of the theater.

But you're absolutely right that Lynch is a master when it comes to music, integrating that music into the thematic reality of his work. These two brilliant scenes are excellent examples.

In one scene, you have Betty and Rita brought to tears by the song; while in the other scene you have Laura brought to tears by the song. In both, the characters are being exposed, painfully, to truths that while they may not understand, they FEEL. And they are exposed through song.

Lynch is a freakin' genius.

(amazing homage to all his films in this btw!)

(sorry about quality!)

He even makes Ramstein work in his films!

The question of Criterion related tattoos has been raised before. I can't remember who it was but someone posted pics on here of his collection.

I didn't realize Akin was in the World Cinema box set and that he influenced Scorcese about Dry Summer! I bought this earlier in the year and still need to open and watch the films in there. That may be the next project I tackle.

I just watched that 90 second trailer for Transylvania too. Birol Ünel might be my favorite actor now (he strangely resembles a young Bob Geldof crossed with the late Michael Hutchence assuming he were still alive today and aged a bit). Oh, I just noticed Ünel's birthday is one day before mine too.

You are welcome, jw007.

Don't waste your time with Soul Kitchen, it is a very average film at very best. The two films you have already seen are Akin's best work. The only other film worth seeing is In July, but the old U.S. DVD release is quite poor. Solino is interesting, but if you want to see great films about Italy made by Turks you should go to Ferzan Ozpetek. He remains one of the best directors currently working in Italy.

We actually have a review for his Oscar entry Facing Windows. Fantastic film. Ozpetek is a very sensual director and I have not really seen anyone else film food as well as he does -- possibly with the exception of Roland Joffé (see his Vatel with Gerard Depardieu).

This is the review for La finestra di fronte, which is also out on DVD in the U.S. via Sony Pictures Classics. It was the great Massimo Girotti's final film.

I've been planning to add a review for Ozpetek's latest film, but I have been quite busy. I will do it shortly. It is out on Blu-ray in Italy and it is English-friendly. (Looks like we don't have a profile for it, but I will create one).

Back to Tony Gatlif: Obviously he is not a Turk, but his films have the same ethnic element Akin's films do. You would learn quite a lot about gypsy culture, rituals and music from them. Just about all of them are road pictures. Probably the most conventional one is Exiles, with Romain Duris (from The Spanish Apartment trilogy). The U.S. DVD release from Image Entertainment is very good. But you can start with Transylvania, since you already like Ünel.

And if you discover that you enjoy Gatlif's films, you can transition straight into the crazy world of Emir Kusturica. Obviously, he does not need to be introduced, but I should say that his mid-period films are his best. In addition to Underground, Black Cat White Cat and Life is a Miracle are definitely worth seeing. Black Cat... is one of the funniest films you would ever see It is my favorite. (I believe it is only out on an English-friendly DVD in Australia. It is the one I have). Unfortunately, for the equally charming Time of the Gypsies there is no good English-friendly DVD release. The French disc is quite nice, but it has only French subtitles.

Back to Criterion

Tootsie looks spectacular after the 4K restoration. I am finishing the review and will post it shortly.
