The 49th Parallel and A Matter Of Life And Death are both available on Blu-ray in France.

I fell in love with this film, was a blind buy and I have no regrets.

Umm which kid? I thought they were both really great in their roles?
I thought
[Show spoiler]the boy was the weakest part of the whole film. Given his lines, he needed be a kid but play older, sophisticated, worldly-wise and very mature, mature to the point of coming on to his governess. That was the implied influence of Quint. But the kid actor wasn't able to pull that demanding task off. I thought the delivery of both kids was sort of flat, but the boy's was especially so because he's a kid but has to sell us on being mature and a little sleazy on the inside. He couldn't handle his lines, and though Clayton is great with a camera, he apparently didn't help the boy any. And I thought this was an especially big problem because the boy's role is so central to the tension and conflict at the center of the movie.

I think so many other things are so good that the film is still really worth watching. There's just that one somewhat big problem.

No way! I was gonna guess you said
[Show spoiler]the girl atleast, I thought she was great but the boy was flawless! well in my opinion that is :P, for me he came across as very mature and even my sister on her first viewing was questioning who he was, and if he was possessed by an adult in a way. Im really surprised you saw him as the weaker one though. For me, he was eery, and came across as an adult trapped in a childs body.

I found him better on a second viewing though, same for all the cast members.

I don't think anyone will be as good as Kirsten Dunst in Interview with a Vampire though, now she did pull of that 'adult in a child body' very very well.

But each to their own!

Do you know anything about this?
No. First I've heard of it. One might think that they managed to swing some sort of deal with Fox for films they made for them, but none of the ones you mention were produced by Seven Arts.

THE INNOCENTS is a rewarding film each time you watch it! After experiencing it once or twice try just focusing upon the wonderful photography of DP Freddie Francis. He's one of my top ten DPs (though I always felt he was a weak Director) and each of his films are beautiful and his photography serves the story well. What I mean by this is that he isn't flashy or showy for the sake of drawing attention to himself but frames and lights each scene perfectly and allows natural camera movements that benefit from his deep focus. You could turn the sound off and just sink into the ethereal worlds of THE INNOCENTS or Lynch's THE ELEPHANT MAN. Francis even makes DUNE watchable...for me anyway:-)

My two packages from B&N to Australia arrived weeks apart even though they were mailed on the same day. So not necessarily.

Well the plan for tonight was to delve deeper into my Cassavetes set (Faces up next, would be a first viewing of this one). However, I was reading about Fassbinder during work, and now I'm intrigued. Should I watch my first Fassbinder instead? I was thinking Fear Eats the Soul, The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant, or another suggestion?

I picked up the Criterion Blu-ray of Time Bandits from Movie Stop today, since I had some trade-in money there for turning in a redundant movie (no need for my old stand-alone Blu-ray of 20 Million Miles to Earth, now that I have the Harryhausen box set).

There were three copies of Time Bandits at the store, and I checked all three to find the one with the slipcover in the most perfect condition.
God help me, I'm going toward the dark side...

Definitely, if Criterion starts with slipcovers; what next: Steelbooks??

Faces will have to wait. I ended up watching Fox and His Friends. Pretty good. Fairly repetitive and predictable. But, enjoyable none the less. I'll be checking out more Fassbinder, as I saw a fair amount of potential here.

Edit: I will add that Fassbinder's acting left something to be desired.

Watch Fassbinder's 'In a Year with 13 Moons' if you can.

If they still had the rights to Robocop that would've been the perfect title for a Steelbook.

I think Criterion should release steelbooks in the sense that it would be AWESOME to own Criterion steelbook editions. I don't know if they want to because they already have one of the most OCD-friendly fandoms of any company, so it would be hard to manage that level of near-perfection. I'm not sure they want to deal with steelbook collector's OCD on top of that.

I'd rather have more pop-up book packaging like with Godzilla.

Imagine the possibilities with films like Scanners.

Apparently AMOLAD is not a restoration, just an upgrade based on the same transfer as the current R1 DVD. I would be amazed if this great film were not the next one up for a proper restoration; so for me I'm going to hold on a bit.

Don't know about 49th Parallel. It's too easy to assume that if a BD appears it means a new resto! Clearly not always the case...

As a part-time steelbook collector, I sincerely hope Criterion don't start making them! I'd be broke in no time...
