1. The film most definitely played in European cinemas.

2. September 28th for the DVD release:

haha, you could be right. I feel like the thing "Salo" has going for it, in that respect, is that unlike modern gross out/shock entertainment and what have you, that "Salo" doesn't sensationalize it. People go into horror movies nowadays to see the kills and the gore and celebrate it, whereas "Salo" has such a reality to the goings-on that it makes it personal for the viewer, thereby pushing all the right buttons. At least, thats how I feel about it. I think it would be awesome to show these youngsters such things, but i feel they couldn't sit still long enough to enjoy it, but maybe something can still get to them in some way.

A Michael Bay version of these films would involve really low brow humor (like replace the characters with roughnecks and Anna Karina wearing a G string, and I mean the Anna Karina NOW as an attempt to make us laugh). Have something like aliens, terrorist, explosive canisters or maybe Martin Lawrence in a Godard film.

I really do not feel that sentiment to be honest. I think it's caught up in it's sensationalism as anything that celebrates it. I actually stopped about half way through (you know that scene I wish not to type). It's message really just sustains itself about 15 minutes and then just finds way to shock and offend you as some sort of way to redeem itself as an artistic achievement; I find it to be on the verge of voyeurism. It's not much different from the many exploitation films. Did you know the director of "Salo" Pier Paolo Pasolini was murdered shortly after "Salo" for something about him supporting communism, but I think the other side of the coin was that he was a pervert.

Thanks. Hoping for a U.S. release. Who has the "big ones" to do it is another thing.

That part about P.P Pasolini beign a pervert and a communist and therefore he died that way, that is exactly what the more to political right, in Italy, has beign saying for the last 35 Years. On the other hand Pasolini did attack Andreotti (and other Christ Democrats) publicly and calling him a Mafiosi: That was at a time where Andreotti was untouchable, because it took almost another 20 years more to link him to the Mafia. This are not the type of enemies you want to have in Italy today or in the past. Salo beign a voyeuristic Movie is the intention of the Movie. Problem with Salo is most people have only seen that one film from Pasolini, and it's difficult to judge it apart from his other Work, because People should really start with his Films like "Accatone" or "Mama Roma" and then move to "Oedipus Rex" and "The Gospel According to St.Matthew" and later his trilogy about life and in the end watch Salo. I think it's not a Movie to be easy dismissed and knowing after switching of in the middle what he's saying in the end.

He has the nerve to challenge some truly powerful men . I find it odd that you put a suggestion about watch his movies through chronologically even if they have little to do with each other. I have only seen one Pasolini film, which was Salo, which was his best known in America (I believe). I ended up getting that felling "I told you so!" when I watched it. I really am however do not want to watch it again however even for it's "intentions".

Wait. I've been out of the loop for a while, so apologies in advance: What happened to CCs release of Antichrist? I see no trace of it on their page.

It's sometimes difficult to discern Pasolini from his work. So that is maybe why I chose the chronological order. But I think Salo overshadows his origins which are great in Accatone. He also wrote as one of the first Italians in dialect, I think even some dialogues for Fellinis "Nights of Cabiria". And the other thing about chronological order is, that Pasolini constantly changed his style and interest in different stories. So that's maybe why. And Salo came as a reaction, because after three very life-affirming movies came Salo which took a sinister turn, and anger about reception of previous movies. The other part I understand it's easy for me who lives right next to Italy and grew up watching his Films, that where allway shown in TV. Even the uncut Salo, on National Television. To see everything he did, it's certainly different in America, and it's clear why allways the scandal causing movie will be the one that prevails. But that should not be. I think Martin Scorsese for example is a great admirer of Oedipus Rex, he should set things in motion for good American Blu-ray of that Film.

Ok. So I found the site I was looking for.

When does the Barns and Noble-sale go off?

It hasn't been officially announced with a release date, yet, from Criterion.

I just saw on Imdb.com in the section of technical specs of "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence" that it's filmed in
VistaVision. That Blu-ray is now a can't wait to see how it looks item.

I currently have Masculin Feminin on order and can't wait to see it. It's hard for me to leave out Contempt as I personally found it a very engrossing movie.

Oh, and the reason we chose our username? I don't think you need many hints from me.

Good choices there. I also want to point out that I love his Made in USA and La Chinoise days, though the 3 I listed can't be touched in terms of me watching them more.
