Would make more sense it is a mistake or they are using the Arte disc? Seems impossible that the CC disc is printed before even an announcement is made or that Janus wouldn't be supplying their own print for something like this.

Does the Arte disc have English subtitles?

It could be a misprint. The cinematheque shows Janus prints all the time. They've done 12-film Janus programs, too.

No there are no subs on that disc at all. Probably a misprint but whether its the new 4k on a print or they magically have a cc blu of it, I wouldn't hesitate to go!

I'll gladly double-dip if Criterion or a comparable studio were to pick up the title, though.
Thanks for the heads up.. may hve to bite the bullet.

I don't care if directors meant for me to watch their films in 3D format, because if its harmful to human eyesight, I won't even take that chance in the first place.

In France, they've called for a ban on this technology because it damages children's development! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencete...-eyesight.html
My wife has problems with 3D films, they make her eyes and head hurt. I'm not a big fan myself, I always find myself taking the glasses off a few times during the film. I haven't seen a ton of 3D movies, but I do watch from time to time.

Well I *did* order it, so what's done is done.

They are also having a sale on Third Window stuff so if you're B able and like Asian Cinema, there's a lot to be had for £6.50 (or £5.42 once VAT is removed).

Also for that price are Bastards and Metro Manila, both Pro-b recommendations from a little while back.

My wife has exactly the same problem. Once we went to an IMAX 3D and she was sick for the rest of the day. With our current HD technology I am more than happy with the high contrast, nearly 3D appearance we get.

Here's the reply I received:

Quote:
Hi, Patrick. It's not the Criterion Blu-ray but a Blu-ray of the film's recent restoration that the U.S. distributor, Rialto Pictures, is supplying to us. I would imagine that the eventual Criterion Blu-ray would be mastered from the same source.

Take note that we're also showing Alain Resnais' latest (and last) film LIFE OF RILEY on Jan. 9 & 10.

The prerelease version is rougher around the edges in terms of the transfer, but I prefer it just the same because of the storytelling and the luxurious pacing. My Darling Clementine is such a cool-looking movie, with the Monument Valley background, some great framing shots on the wooden porch, and a great stagecoach interruption scene during the big gunfight.

Victor Mature, who plays Doc Holliday, was underrated, and he appeared in some good film noirs. If you have not yet seen the Twilight Time Blu-ray of Violent Saturday, then watch it at your earliest convenience.
Of course, it goes without saying that Henry Fonda knocks it out of the park.

Stagecoach remains my favorite John Ford movie, but I love the vibe of My Darling Clementine. It stands alongside Gunfight at the O.K. Corral as my favorite film based on the Wyatt Earp legend.

Next up... My UK Blu-ray of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
ah, crap, Owl... you just sold me on another TT title. Vic Mature was totally bada$$ in MDC. ..and the PQ got out of the park marks on this site (for VS, that is)

I'll just hope to get lucky on eBay, though... or wait for a TT promotion. don't wanna pay $35

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is a fun and emotionally-charged story that manages to pack a wealth of insight about American politics and mythology without coming across as a chore. James Stewart, John Wayne, Vera Miles, and Lee Marvin are all perfect onscreen, and the bulk of the movie depends on their character interactions. This movie really knocks it out of the park, however, with its impressive cast of supporting actors, including film noir veteran Edmond O'Brien as a newspaper editor, Andy Devine as a town marshal, and the brilliant Woody Strode as a farmhand.

I'd love for Criterion to pick this Ford film up as a title, because the UK disc, while sporting an impressive transfer, lacks any special features.

John Ford's works have never let me down, and I'm glad that the recent discussions in this thread compelled me to move some of my Blu-ray purchases to the top of the unwatched stack.

Next up... Rio Grande.
I saw TMWSLV in the theater when I was a kid and thought Liberty was about the meanest guy I'd ever seen.
Another good film that gives Woody Strode a sizable part is The Last Voyage. Excellent that unfortunately is dvd only at the moment.
Rio Grande has a great score and when the opening credits play I always get chicken-skin!

Yeah, same here. We just don't do 3D films anymore really.... unless that's all the theater is offering. But even then, she'll sometimes just want to wait for the blu-ray.

AmazonUK and Base.com both remove VAT from the price for US orders. Base charges a flat £1.49 for most items which means that items usually ship to the US for at and below the price shown on the website (they also have really low prices sometimes). Amazon you usually have to order multiple items before the shipping and VAT removal even out.

MOC ships to the US with free shipping, no minimums.

Happy B regioning!

Thanks for the shipping and cost info. I actually just emailed the MoC guys to ask about shipping, couldn't believe they shipped to the US free too.

I haven't watched that many documentaries, but I really enjoyed Blank's Burden of Dreams. So, I plan to buy Always for Pleasure during the next Criterion flash sale, which I'm guessing will be on the last Tuesday of February. I just recently picked up Hulu, so hopefully I will be able to watch most of the films in the set before the next sale. I guess I will start with the film that is first chronologically, The Blues Accordin' to Lightnin' Hopkins, if it is available on Hulu.

I hope you will enjoy your purchase. I believe this set is probably a great deal for $40.
If you watch the documentaries on Hulu first, won't you want to wait a while until you watch them again after purchasing this 3 disc blu-ray release? Usually after I see a film for the first time, I need to wait a minimum of a year or maybe longer until I watch it again (unless I just totally am mesmerized by it of course). To me, I think its about taking a leap of faith and blind-watching all of these wonderful films for the first time on pristine blu-ray quality.

And yes, I hope Pro-B gets a review up soon on this release!

No wife here, but I'm not surprised to hear this. I suspected something was wrong with the way 3D films are viewed by human beings today. There's something sinister lurking underneath the surface here and you know if your body reacts in a negative way, it can't be good.

Last night's final Herzog movie was Happy People: A Year in the Taiga (link). What I hadn't realized, before watching this remarkable documentary shot in Russia's Siberia, is that Werner Herzog hadn't actually shot any of this film or was involved in the original filmmaking of it, but rather he took Dmitry Vasyukov's original footage and re-edited it and re-engineered the sound and gave it a new music score along with his own narration. Herzog's accomplishment is remarkable to say the least, but if he had been there himself asking the people the interesting questions he usually asks, this would have been an even better film for sure.

Bonus trivia from this documentary: Mikhail Tarkovsky, related to the great Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky, was documented in the film as a fur trapper.

Well, my Barnes & Noble store looked as if a cyclone had hit the Criterion blu-ray section and swept away all the titles that I had considered purchasing. No Sundays and Cybele, no Tootsie, no Certified Copy or The Devil's Backbone ... I started leave empty-handed, when I suddenly remembered a film that I had been curious about, but had never ever sought out ... Rene Clement's Purple Noon. I looked at the shelf where it should have been, but nope, it wasn't there. But, as I turned away, feeling both disappointed and frustrated, my eye glanced down at the bottom shelf, below the Criterions and the Children's films and there it was, mixed in with the musicals: Purple Noon. I figured whoever shelved it must have confused it with Purple Rain, but whatever the case, I took it as a sign that it must have been hidden there waiting for me to find it. :-)

My wife gets motion sickness when we go on car trips, but I haven't taken her negative body reaction to mean that there is something sinister about the way human beings travel place to place.
