Since this is not me, I’d say it is ok to give a heads up on a seller on eBay. He/she is offering $5 off for every 3 items you buy. I’ve had my eye on a handful of Olive titles, but never really wanted to pay $15 a piece considering.. well, you know – limited features and no subs. Anyway, this seller already has the lowest prices I’ve seen for Olive titles. Take an extra $5 and you’re in business.

I’m buying: The Quiet Man, The Pawnbroker, and Force of Evil. I’m out the door for $32.69. Check it out. EBay registered name is buy-dvds-here. If you search for The Quiet Man and sort by cheapest, the first listing is his/hers.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Those are three excellent Blu-rays. I was tempted to revisit The Quiet Man this week after watching a bunch of other John Ford movies this past weekend.

My last three Ford Blu-rays (The Horse Soldiers, Fort Apache, The Sun Shines Bright) arrived in the mail yesterday.

I haven't got time to catch up, as I'll be AFK until at least Friday (if not longer), but I wanted to wish people a Merry Christmas, Happy Ḥanukkah, or whatever you choose to celebrate (or not). Enjoy the holidays, and if you get some Criterions in your stocking, enjoy them as well.

I like Shakes the Clown, but that is definitely the odd duck of the bunch. I'm not sure what they mean by films every man should see (are there any titles on the list women should skip?). I no longer get worked up about such lists. My only correction would be to replace the overrated Shaun of the Dead with Dead Alive. The lawn mower scene is a once in a lifetime experience and can bring a grown man to tears.

(I'm still wondering if it's policy in this thread to put titles in bold. Will I be ostracized if I don't?)

My new job also keeps me on my feet a lot more while I'm performing environmental inspections on construction sites up in the mountains, so a good movie on a weeknight is often just what the doctor ordered.

I love being outdoors and seeing the world the way that God meant for me to see it, but I also love me some good movies.

It's a scary world out there, anyway. Watch Letter Never Sent, and you'll know what I mean. When I'm inside watching a Blu-ray on my television, the chance that I'll burn to death in a forest fire or freeze to death on a Siberian plain is roughly zero. There's something to be said for that.
Not only do I own Letter Never Sent, I love this film and have watched it many times. It's true, there's something to be said for being aware of the outside world through the medium of cinema, and that is something film has done... bring the outside world into our homes. Nevertheless, you're not really experiencing such a world (and of course most of us wouldn't want to, especially in Siberia where as you said you can burn to death or freeze to death - of course if a person is ill-prepared, the chances of that happening are more common), but you're "watching" that world or watching someone's art and interpretation of that world. So its not your own personal experience but something that was manufactured and thus you have a stigma that Siberia must be a dangerous, scary, fearful place full of forest fires, floods, freezes and man-eating bears and isolation that can kill a man within days. I actually just watched Herzog's co-directed film of Happy People: A Year in the Taiga and I was amazed by how some of these inhabitants not only survive but thrive in such hostile conditions. The world isn't so scary if you're more connected to the land.

oildude: that was a perfect posting of that scene from 12 Monkeys. Hopefully you don't think I'm a crackpot though like Brad Pitt's character.

The only reason I watched it in the first place was because it was one of CJ Entertainment's LE releases which I was collecting at the time. It's a funny, endearing and emotional experience. Similarly, to what you guys have said about The Big Chill, it also seems to have special significance to people who grew up in a certain generation, that would be those who were teens during the 80s in Korea. The political turmoil is a backdrop for much of the flashbacks. I know little about this history so I'm sure it would resonate more with someone who does, especially if they lived through it. Still, it makes for an interesting story.

(Is bolding the titles of films now SOP in this thread?)

I wonder what those who're worried about backmasking would think of the songs in my iPod. Songs like Blunt Force Castration, Torn from the Womb, Battery Acid Enema, Splatterday Night Fever, Nunslaughter, and Burnt to a F**k, to name a few, don't need to be played backward to hear negative messages.

It's not just a problem for metalheads either. I remember getting into an argument at work with a guy who thought Amy Winehouse's music promotes drug use to children. It was clear that he had only ever heard her most popular song and he hadn't paid attention to the lyrics or he would've known better. Even if her music did promote drug use, her life gave the opposite message (the argument took place the day after she died).

Now there's a vocal group of people who shall remain nameless who are floating the idea that our music and movies and video games lead us to be misogynists, racists, and general bigots if not rapists and murderers. The inclination to censor is strong.

Two words: Breaking Bad

Also, 30 Rock

Between this and your previous post using the term "sheeple", I think you need to lay off the Alex Jones.
Thanks, I'll have to check out Sunny, it sounds interesting. And I just always bold titles... I saw others do it when I first started posting, so I just went along with it. That or italics.

And yes, Breaking Bad.. 'nough said.

Got $100 in Amazon cards and want to spend in at least half on Criterions. What should I get? America Lost and Found (in which I have only seen Head and Easy Rider) or the 1-2 punch of Brazil and Dazed and Confused?

EDIT: I jumped on BBS Story.

All right everyone, my Criterion-fest has ended now that 24 hours of A Christmas Story has begun... my wife loves this movie, and happy wife, happy life.

So Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, and a late Happy Festivus to you all, or just Happy Holidays if you prefer. Safe travels to everyone if you travel and hope you get all the Criterion blu-rays you want!

Too bad i missed the conversation about the 3D, but here it goes my 2 cents anyway.

I was never a fan of 3D, but my main issue was that there were a lot of converted movies that seemed to only exist in 3d for the sake of the studios making some extra money, later i found that there are some genuinely great 3d films, but unfortunately they often come long apart.

Now after some of the greatest directors taking a shot and experimenting with 3D i don't think that it is just a gimmick, it's just too bad that most movies use it only as such, so i fear it may never acquire the reputation it needs to be the next big change in cinema, like talkies and color in their age.

Evolution doesn't decide, we as a species decide now, there is no more natural selection for us since we became intelligent beings and control our own environment.

Since i doubt anyone will die or wont have children just because he can't see 3d movies, i doubt that people who can't see them will end up eradicated in the future, although i think they will continue to be a minority, since being able to see in 3d in real life is still an advantageous asset in our lives for example for driving, etc.

Now to keep this criterion related, what CC will you all be watching this Christmas, seems this is one category where the collection falls short on?

Anyway Merry Christmas to all

I just got back from celebrating Christmas with my family, since we always get together on Christmas Eve.

I'm thinking of watching the Criterion DVD of Blast of Silence tonight. Spreading that good holiday cheer all around!

Of course, later tonight or tomorrow morning belongs to It's a Wonderful Life. That's a yearly tradition.

I watched the Turner Classic Movies Blu-ray of Remember the Night a couple of nights ago, and it's a wonderful Christmas film starring Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

I logged in to express similar wishes to each and every one of you, but there's no way I could say it better than did lordmorpheus.

So I'll just say "ditto" and extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone here. By turns, you all make my life richer through your unique gifts, which sometimes make me think, sometimes make me laugh, but always enrich my appreciation of film, and particularly the Criterion Collection.
