This reminds me of last year when everyone was convinced that Deer Hinter was coming, then the clue was actually for All That Heaven Allows.

That's awesome, I didn't know that. It would be cool if one of his films was in it currently, though.

Yeah, I also remember a lot of people dismissing THE BIG CHILL and ALL THAT JAZZ last year and those were correct.

Has any Spielberg blu-ray actually received rave reviews for its presentation? Particularly picture quality? It seems they all are divisive and have criticisms. He's probably just being strategic and careful to make sure people keep buying subsequent releases. Seeing a Criterion version would be very interesting...though I doubt it'll happen for something significant, as most of his films are still gold mines.

Clearly the ship could be anything. I said Peter Pan half jokingly. But it could be Pocahontas too (lol) or Master and Commander or something very old school like The Sea Hawk. I bet it's The New World, though it's available on blu-ray. I wonder if its different cuts will be all together.

Love the Stooges, but an Elvis man here, so bring it on.

Volker Schlõndorff is director, based on Max Frisch's novel.
Don't know one, but will check it out!

I thought it's 99% certain that it's The New World and I don't understand why this is still being discussed.
As someone had said, Criterion said there is a Warner Mallick on the way, and this is a Warner Mallick!

It just seems odd that they would give a clue twice. I don't recall them ever doing that before.

Betting on The Fisher King for sure... especially since I just ordered it from Amazon yesterday with a gift card.

Actually, almost every single Spielberg release has had top-notch PQ. He was involved in the process for most of the Blu-ray releases which is also part of the reason for them taking longer than usual to hit Blu-ray. Only a few of them haven't been as well received.

The first release of Jurassic Park was from a dated master... no one really understands why, I think, as Spielberg was involved. For the 3D release it received a new 4K scan/restoration and was then worked with for that re-release, which Spielberg approved (it was his idea for the 3D conversion). Hook doesn't have a perfect presentation but Spielberg feels less invested in that film, probably because of the amount of hate it receives from some. He has since said it was his biggest disappointment for him personally.

Pretty much everything else has a top-notch release. Always has some processing on it that's not perfectly natural, but it's presentation is also it's best to date. Duel has had some debate because the Blu-ray is the widescreen theatrical presentation and not the full frame TV version. Spielberg has said he prefers the full frame version as it showed fewer errors he made (though both show errors). He also approved of it's theatrical release, so leave this to opinion somewhat, IMHO.

Criterion would only have a few films to work with as far as improving PQ for Spielberg's filmography. However, I think anything Spielberg receiving a Criterion Blu-ray release would be an amazing thing.

I know some hate the film but for me... it is one of my favorites.
Which Hook LD had extras? Not seeing any on lddb.com

Not really. anthonyls emphatically said they'd "never" do it. They've done it. The circumstances aren't at issue.

Secondly, Michael Bay didn't have "a Criterion clause in his contract". Yes, he twisted Disney's arm into letting Criterion do two of his films, but that certainly wasn't in his contract.

Thirdly, Michael Bay wasn't the only director to get Disney to license a title to Criterion. As I mentioned before, there's Kevin Smith's Chasing Amy (on LD and DVD). There are also (on LD) Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, Alan Parker's Evita, the Hughes Brothers' Dead Presidents, and Danny Boyle's Trainspotting

And yes, as GuruAskew mentioned, Disney no longer controls the rights to the Miramax releases, but they did at the time they were licensed to Criterion, and the Parker and Hughes' films are still controlled by them through their Hollywood Pictures subsidiary.

And those are just the Criterion titles I can remember coming from Disney.

I believe that was a reference to Wes Anderson (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou), not Bay.

I thought that I read it had some extras on the laserdisc. I don't own it though, I've never collected laserdiscs. Maybe I was incorrect on it having any... don't really know as I don't have it.

I know I saw a custom cover for Hook that noted laserdisc extras. Weird that someone would do that if it didn't come with some.

In previous years they have teased already announced titles and teased "Y tu mama tambien" twice in consecutive years (after it being officially announced as part of the IFC deal years earlier).
