Oh, ok then..
Still I don't see that movie as a Criterion material.
They have released some musicals:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/searc...&action=search

But I don't see them being interested in mainstream Hollywood classic musicals.

Anyway, if they do release The King and I, I would hope it would be corrected in the color palette.
I don't see the point of re-releasing the same controversial transfer that has caused a lot of discussion.

They release West Side Story on Laserdisc back in the day, so, it's not a stretch if people want to think that. Also, the whole, it just came out on Blu is a foolish notion because Brazil was released soon after the cheapo edition. Ditto for Dazed and Confused. It's less of a stretch than the Disney titles people are dead sure about.

Criterion releases a lot of different titles and genres, including a lot of films people find questionable because of their own notion as to what the collection should hold.

This year's cartoon has quite a few "it could be..." moments. I hope as the releases are announced we're all slapping are forehead saying 'THAT'S what that meant', for a clever clue that we should've known. But, I'm afraid there will be more of 'what a crap clue' ie. All That Jazz. The good thing is, regardless of the quality of the tune, we'll end up with some pretty good titles.

Not a "criterion material"..lol. And B movie western starring Brando is somehow a "criterion material"? Your guess is merely a wishful thinking.

Maybe it's just me, but what is and what isn't "criterion material" for them to release went out the window a long time ago! They seem to release whatever the hell they want when they want to. How many classics in their catalogue will they keep on the back burner while they give us Moonrise Kingdom etc? Not that I;m complaining but nowadays something is "criterion material" once they announce it and that's it. Wouldn't be surprised as much anymore

Side note, I'm wondering how many defective discs it'll be this year with them! My copy of Tootsie freezes over an hour into the movie. Still haven't gotten my Walkabout and M disc replacements in, just got the Eraserhead one shortly before the holiday. Whoever goes and gets the mail over there must get tomatoes thrown at them when they return with loads of discs

On the contrary.
I would much prefer King and I than One-eyed jacks.

Anyway, we will see in the end of the year who got closer to his guesses.
(not that we're in a contest or anything )

But that one from what I understand has only one extra, so there is a room for improvement and reason to upgrade to a Criterion edition.*
The king and I is already loaded with extras, and I don't see the point of upgrading to Criterion, other than correcting the troublesome blue colors!

*Same for Brazil. I see the original Bluray had no extras whatsoever!
Same for Moonrise Kingdom. It just has 3 3minute ones.

Has Criterion at any time re-released a film that was already loaded with extras?

I thought the King fishing was already established as Gilliam's THE FISHER KING? Could it also be a "double clue"?

He's holding an eye on his fishing rod. That's something separate from The Fisher King

Also, am I the only one that sees a moon and stars in the eye? I don't think it was a coincidence to have it drawn like that.

There's no doubt it's the Fisher King. I don't think there's any reason it couldn't tie into both (if the Before Trilogy is correct, that moon is also part of the Moonrise Kingdom clue)

No idea, but I don't think they'd do it unless they thought they could release a better picture. I am pretty sure that would be their goal.

I dont know about this *Criterion material* terminology. Whether its a *good* film , a bad film that people like, a true classic or a guilty pleasure I think its a very positive happening when a great label like Criterion licensees the film
Everything from Equinox to Anatomy of A Murder
That's why I look forward to the 15th of the month because they have dropped a few surprises over the years. I love old horror and sci fi and would personally love a Criterion release of the Crawling Eye, the original Invaders from Mars or even the original Lost Continent and those Bert I Gordon *50' classics* . Its probably not likely but that would make my day. Anything on my DVD shelves on would be most welcome from Criterion

A Hard Day's Night had a Canadian release which could be bought cheaply that had a lot of extras, but it's since gone out of print. Most didn't buy it because the 1080i.

I decided to bow out and stop trying to interpret the drawings.

The New Year's Day cartoons are fun to mull over, but I do not look at them as concrete written-in-stone agendas, simply because most of the drawings have multiple interpretations, and because releases sometimes get delayed to a subsequent year (Eraserhead, etc.).

Last year, I could have sworn that the red sun in the drawing was for the movie, Red Sun. I mean, it would stand to reason that a red sun stands for a Red Sun. That never quite panned out, though.

There are a few no-brainers each year (Riot in Cell Block 11, The Fisher King, etc.), but there are also a few that I'll never really pinpoint, and I get a laugh when I see a title and realize that I was off on an interpretation all along.

Why not? On laserdisc, they released Swing Time, The Producers, Show Boat (1936), Singin' in the Rain, The Wizard of Oz, West Side Story, and Evita. Now, granted, they didn't put out any of these on DVD or Blu-ray, but that's undoubtedly because the studios in question decided to hold onto them for those formats.

Which is not to say I think The King and I is a lock for Criterion, but I have no doubt that if Fox is willing to license it to them, they'd be more than happy to release it.

It didn't go out the window a long time ago; it was never in the window in the first place. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: "Criterion material" is whatever Criterion decides is "Criterion material"; it always has been and it always will be.
