I figured it's probably not a big seller, since for me I'd never even heard of it until your dvd came out, and I got a copy. Not too long after, I happened to catch it on Showtime in HD, and it's been permanently on my radar ever since. Shepard, Delpy and Sukowa...

Also, looks like the novel was refilmed last year, interesting.

The clues don't have to literally depict accurate pictographic representations of every word or syllable, etc. Take this clue for example:

The movie isn't titled Badlambs.

Or this one:

The title is Love Streams...I only see one stream.
I've never argued it couldn't be One-Eyed Jacks, just that The King and I fits better. iScottie was saying OEJ was a sure thing. I'm saying we can't say that.

Totally forgot to vote on the year end poll oops! Probably would pick Persona as the release of the yr.

Off-topic I saw Whiplash last night, pretty amazing movie. I highly recommend it. (Mini spoiler w/o having anything to do with the plot, the main character goes to see Rififi in the theater woot a Criterion connection!)

In terms of movie content, the best Criterions from this year have no equal (L'Avventura, The Vanishing, Insomnia, Il Sorpasso, etc.). That's pretty much a given.

Kino Lorber, however, has excelled this year when it comes to releasing the type of fun "Saturday afternoon flicks" that I enjoy watching when I'm in a laid-back mood simply to enjoy car chases, fast-paced plots, and some good old guy-movie action. There are a handful of 1980s movies here that I never expected to see again, and it's great having them on Blu-ray.
[Show spoiler]
Kino Lorber bolted out of the gates earlier this year with a handful of bona fide classics (Marty, Witness for the Prosecution, Separate Tables), and they still release such films on occasion (On the Beach, Elmer Gantry, etc.), but the "Saturday afternoon flicks" that they've released since are just as enjoyable.

The Kino Lorber Blu-rays in my collection are listed below.

Witness for the Prosecution
Marty
Separate Tables
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes
The Children's Hour
The Unforgiven
Breakheart Pass
Mr. Majestyk
On the Beach
Across 110th Street
Juggernaut
The Great Train Robbery
Meteor
The Young Savages
Elmer Gantry
Run Silent, Run Deep
Topkapi
Married to the Mob
Desperately Seeking Susan
Gorky Park
Gator
White Lightning
The Long Goodbye
The Emerald Forest
Witness to Murder
The Quatermass Xperiment
Avenging Force
Running Scared

I've also got these on order...

River's Edge
Foxes
Hickney & Boggs
The Offence

There are several holes in my collection that other Kino Lorber fans might comment on, but I've throughly enjoyed supporting the label. These releases are generally available for decent prices (around $15-18) to boot.

It's tough to pick favorites, but a few that have really surprised me with their awesomeness are...

On the Beach
Across 110th Street
Separate Tables
Juggernaut
Breakheart Pass
Witness to Murder

Serious cinema enthusiasts may frown at the likes of Mr. Majestyk or Avenging Force, but I'd find it difficult to relate to anyone who doesn't enjoy these action flicks at least a little bit
.
Owl, thanks for the list and for the information. I've often wondered about the Kino releases and how they stacked up compaired to others. And I know exactly what you mean by Sunday afternoon movies..

I second that! I love that film, one of Bill Murray's great performances... and a great story as well.

Design for Living did not give me full-blown belly laughs in the same way that Lubitsch's To Be or Not to Be did, but it did keep a smile on my face because it's amusing in a different and more sophisticated sort of way. Gary Cooper and Fredric March make a great comedic pair, and their interactions lend an innocently fun spirit to a story that treads some risqué waters. Miriam Hopkins owns this movie, though, and I couldn't take my eyes off of her.

It's interesting to imagine such a film being made in this day and age. Although society is more tolerant of diversity in overall terms these days, I'm inclined to believe that the story might not fly with many contemporary audiences.

Lubitsch's comedic timing is impeccable. My favorite sequence is Gilda's visit to the apartment right after George and Tom clean it.

I bought Design for Living a year or so ago, but it sat overlooked on my shelf for a while. In recent days, I've been trying to make somewhat random selections of my still-unwatched discs, because it's fun to be taken off guard by surprises. Yesterday's viewing of my Olive Films Blu-ray of Escape from Zahrain was also a pleasant surprise.
I loved To Be or Not to Be, so now I'm curious about this film. Thinking I'll add it to my list of movies to watch soon. Thanks for the info.

Lots of 1 girl and 2 guy movies. (Finger cuffs...anybody?)
Chasing Amy anyone??

This was the first time I conducted the poll strictly via PM. 24 voted and I think most of the regulars are represented. Thank you to all who voted this year!

The 4th Annual Criterion Collection Poll - Best of 2014

Best Cover Art (Voters Picked 1)

17 covers received votes (many of them single votes). These two releases took first place with 3 votes each:

First Place (Tie-3 votes each)

Best Box Set (Voters Picked 1)

It was an incredible year for box sets. I believe The Complete Jacques Tati and The Essential Jacques Demy sets to be among the finest releases to date in Criterion's blu-ray era. Not surprisingly, they received the most votes.

First Place (9 votes)

Second Place (6 votes)

Favorite Blind Purchase (Voters Picked 1)

More than any poll question I think these results reflect the two most-buzzed about blind purchases of the year.

First Place (6 Votes)

Second Place (4 Votes)

The Lena Dunham Award - What were they thinking by releasing______? (Voters Picked 1)

I was surprised by the amount of films (15) receiving votes in this category! Here is the entire list:

Tootsie 3
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World 3
King of the Hill 3

All Receiving Mention
Time Bandits, Insomnia, The Big Chill, F For Fake, The Complete Jacques Tati, Y Tu Mama Tambien, A Hard Day's Night, Blue is the Warmest Color, Hearts and Minds, MacBeth, 400 Blows (Dual Pack Re-Issue) and Breathless (Dual Pack Re-Issue).

Best New Spine (Voters Picked 3)

Best New Spine and Best Release of the Year were the toughest calls to make (Even when picking 3 films!). I think the fact this year saw two major, long awaited releases that just so happen to be cinematic landmarks made the voting especially fierce. Films like A Hard Day's Night, Tess, My Darling Clementine, Red River, etc - probably would've received more votes in any other year.

First Place (10 Votes)

Second Place (6 Votes)

Third Place (5 Votes)

Notables: Red River (4), It Happened One Night (4), The Great Beauty (4), Breaking the Waves (4).

Best Upgrade (Existing Spine DVD to Blu-ray, Voters Picked 3)

20 different films received votes. It was an excellent year for upgrades to some of Criterion's most popular art house films like Rififi, Hidden Fortress, Throne of Blood and Picnic at Hanging Rock. In the end it came down to a long-awaited upgrade, an excellent 2K scan and a dazzling digital 4K restoration.

First Place (Tied-9 votes each)

Second Place (8 Votes)

Best Release of the Year (Voters Picked 3)

I allowed voters to select 3 films but many of us would still find it difficult to narrow it down to a top 5. 34 releases received votes! Owners of the first place entry in this list saw what I think (Along with Last Year at Marienbad) is the greatest representation of classic black & white cinema on the blu-ray format. Pristine!

First Place (10 Votes)

Second Place (5 Votes)

Third Place (Tied - 4 Votes Each)
Thanks so much for all the work on the poll this year, doing it by PM must have really increased the work load.

I'm exactly that way... I have the 3 Films by Roberto Rossellini Starring Ingrid Bergman and John Cassavetes: Five Films sitting on my shelve right now. My wife is out of town this week so I'm hoping to knock out one of them one night this week, or both over the weekend.

I would fully support the inclusion of The Rose and Being There. (the latter seems more likely than the former though).

Both wonderful films from 1979. The first has beautiful cinematography and a magnificent, powerful performance from Bette Midler (she's absolutely amazing in this film) and the second is just full of whimsy and, again, features a great lead performance.

scored on two CC DVDs on eBay recently.

bought Sólo con tu pareja for $5.13 shipped in very good condition and The Uninvited in like new condition for $4.99 shipped.

could not believe the second one! I really liked Woman in Black (the first one,) so I'm hoping that this has a similar vibe. the wife will maybe then sit through it.

While I love that movie I'm kind of hoping it's Two for the Road. If they don't release it, I'll just go for the Eureka version.

Congratulations! Scoring The Uninvited for a paltry $4.99 is perhaps the biggest and best Criterion bargain I've ever heard of. I'm really happy for you!
