And that's the 1977 film version of Hal Prince's A Little Night Music with Elizabeth Taylor, Diana Rigg, Len Cariou, Lesley-Anne Down and Hermione Gingold. I can no more explain why I enjoyed it than I can understand why it was so vehemently hated by audiences and lambasted by critics. Who knows? Anyway, I watched it five or six times the last time it was rotated on HBO, but that was many years ago and it's since disappeared completely. In fact, I think the last thing I read was that the original film elements were in terrible condition.

I would have love Criterion to have released this film in the same package with Smiles of a Summer Night, similar to the way they included the 1935 version of Magnificent Obsession when they released the 1954 remake on DVD. Even having the OST on CD would be appreciated; I wore out my vinyl LP years ago ...

She used to be in her twenties and now she's in her forties.

What's the mystery?

I didn't think that would be a very popular post.

This woman happens to be the same age:

suit yourself if you think J.D. looks like a 45 year old should look. I asked someone at my office who doesn't know who she is to guess how old she is and he guessed late 60's.

I'm knocking on 40 myself. If that is what lies ahead of me in the next 5 to 7 years, I am very very frightened.

So many factors contribute to the ways in which we show our age. I know that Ms. Delpy is a smoker; her weight has bounced up and down a lot; she's fair-skinned and therefore more sensitive to sun-damage; there are dozens of other factors (including alcohol and drug use, genetics, disease, nutrition, etc, etc.) that may be working for or against her. I'm one of those who think that people who care for themselves and love themselves and others are attractive, no matter what their age! (Angela Lansbury? Still gorgeous at the age of 89! Mel Gibson at 58? Not so much.)

Speaking of the Before trilogy, I have to admit that I haven't seen any of them, and know nothing about them whatsoever ... but I'm certainly planning on a blind buy during the first Criterion sale after they hit the street. The enthusiasm on this thread has been contagious!

I don't really have all that much to say about it. People age how they age. Nature in its infinite wisdom has not seen fit to consult me with regard to how people should look at various stages of their lives.

And with all due respect to your coworker, Julie Delpy does not look like she's in her late sixties. That's absurd.

Compare these two photos from the 2014 Oscars...do either of these women look like they're in their late sixties?

Those are all great, but I'd hope for a documentary on the making of the trilogy. Full length docs are my favorite, then deleted scenes and interviews.

Already is on blu, although no English subs.

I'm sure a Criterion upgrade is only a matter of time.

This Proletariat trilogy paints a very grim portrait of life; dead-end jobs, tiny apartments/rooming houses, financial problems....Glad I was finally able to see these, since, IIRC, The Proletariat trilogy has been largely unavailable in the R1 format until relatively recently.

I have also seen Le Havre & La vie de Boheme, and while those are both excellent films, I strongly prefer the Proletariat trilogy. These earlier films are both gritty & raw, something that's somewhat missing from his later movies....

I definitely want to see more of Aki's films, though some of them are hard to get ahold of in the R1 DVD/Blu format...
Thanks for responding to my special post.

I agree...the Proletariat Trilogy is something very substantial that many people haven't seen before.

Amazingly, I was able to buy these blu-rays imported from Finland at a very low cost of only $12 or 13 each! Shipping was only $6 too. Amazing deal. If you can do it, check this site and you can buy all of Kaurismaki's films for cheap...and all the blu-rays play perfectly in Region A/1 for USA: https://www.recordshopx.com/search/?...s&l=ab&l=c&l=d

No problem, mate!

Something's up with this site though. Thought I lost all my bookmarked threads for a second.

Just listing some titles I've upgraded on eBay and had a thought....

Are all the extras from my Playtime release carried over to the Tati set?

Might keep hold of it otherwise.

Thursday the 15th is going to be one major announcement day. In the wee hours we get the complete Oscar nominations and then by late afternoon the Criterion announcements. Yay.

Been kind of a long and interrupted morning/early afternoon, but I've finally finished Stromboli. It is quite an emotional film that caused me to feel for Bergman, but at the same time really think of her as spoiled. However, it is very evident
[Show spoiler]by the end of the movie she comes to the realization that she herself needs help
. The ending is quite good, and I did enjoy the film. However, I can't get the scene with the
[Show spoiler]ferret and the rabbit
out of my head... such a good moment that is terrifying and poignant.

Starting Europe '51 now...
