I have not, but I really want to!

I don't really pay any attention to them. I try to watch all the films nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, and have watched all of the ones that have won thus far, but award shows bore me. I'm half interested in seeing if Benedict Cumberbatch wins Best Actor for The Imitation Game (going to see it tomorrow as it's finally moving to 3 theatres in the entire province, rather than just one!), but, I probably won't bother watching the Oscars at all. I'll end up reading a few books or watching some films.

I do care about ratings for films/novels somewhat, but I also will purposely watch/read crap to see if it is as bad as the reviews say it is.

Speaking of Mildred Pierce, I still need to watch the miniseries, as I loved the novel. Perhaps I'll do that sometime this week, although I have Criterions that need to be watched, and as stated, I'm going to see The Imitation Game tomorrow. I hope Keira Knightly's not as wooden as she usually seems in films. Also, besides Cumberbatch, I'm looking forward to Charles Dance, Allen Leech, Mark Strong, and Tom Goodman-Hill.

Funny thing, Tom Goodman-Hill and Benedict Cumberbatch both played the same character on the radio comedy Cabin Pressure. Tom filled in for Benedict when he lost his voice, as Benedict was one of the major characters on the sitcom, Captain Martin Crieff. I highly recommend it, and I'm very sad it's finished. Zurich, the last episode aired in 2-parts on the 23rd and 24th of December. The whole cast was fabulous. Roger Allam's smarmy Douglas Richardson was my favourite, and admittedly, Cabin Pressure is one of the reasons why I had such a hard time getting into Parade's End, because all I could think about was Douglas and Martin, and not Tietjens and Campion. Also, I read the novel before watching the miniseries, and was slightly disappointed with how Stoppard adapted it. He fleshed out the male characters, but kinda ignored the female characters, or made them too soft. Sylvia isn't a character you're supposed to pity! Also, Valentine wasn't some simpering bimbo, she was far more clever than the miniseries showed her. Also, they cut out the last novel.

But, that's all slightly off topic. Any guesses as to what we can expect Thursday?

Well, I mentioned Birdman back when I saw it around early November mainly because many films in the CC has had a reference in Birdman.

We already know Boyhood and The Grand Budapest Hotel will be coming.

Don't know, i guess for me it feels a bit like when Scorsese won for The Departed, although he of course had much more years of snubs, and at least was nominated many times.
Seems like these award shows always do that. Skip you over then you hit the big time then for a lesser work you win congrats lol

I thought it was revealed that Boyhood may not be coming after all?

Huh, Linklater was saying it was happening, but it looks like it might not be:

anyone got anything more recent than this?

I saw it (Boyhood) last night, by the way. Just incredible. I hope Criterion can put it out.

Since that was before the Paramount release i am sure they are not allowed to give that kind of information, since it would involve potentially losing sales for them.

There's no honor in being region-locked. For example, two years ago MoC released a blu-ray of Onibaba that pretty much trashed every previous home video release, but there's still no announcement from Criterion or any other good US label. While I hope your hope comes true for you, I'd suggest you not be dependent on a particular label / region catering to your film wants

If you don't want to wait for the next Criterion/BN 50% off sale, you can pick up the December and January titles from BN (these are priced at around $29). They have a buy 1, get 1 50% off sale going on now. Unfortunately the second title is offered at 50% off the MSRP and not 50% off the actual sale price. The 20% off coupon works but it is applied to the lower priced (already discounted) title. All in all you get two titles for $45 which is not too shabby - at least for me since I had a bunch of $10 gift cards left over from the end of last year.

Funny you should say that, I just finished MoC's Woman in the Moon tonight and loved it. There's just too much cool stuff on the other side of that big wattery thingamabob.

Richard Linklater never won a Golden Globe or Oscar yet either until last night when his film Boyhood won 3 Golden Globes for best supporting actress, best director and best motion picture / drama category.

These are 2 of my favorite younger directors working today and its thrilling to see their latest films are also probably their best films to date.
Agree that both are great, but younger? Linklater will be 55 this year; Anderson will be 46.

I don't have a specific answer but this is usually determined by the studios that own the films. There may be legal reasons why the original can't be used. I believe that Transamerica doesn't want its logo to be on the UA films produced when it owned the studio and has the contractual right to prevent this. Similarly with the Saul Bass red and black logo for Warner Brothers, I think that the now spun-off Warner Music Group got the rights to the logo and it can't be used for the original movies. This all may not be totally right, but Criterion probably doesn't have any say in what studio logo is used, or at least can't override contractual restraints or even studio preferences, since they don't own the films.

Just think ... in two more days, the Academy Award nominations will be announced!

I predict most of us will be here that evening, engaged in a spirited debate, some of us feeling celebratory and others filled with dismay. Oh, not about the Oscars ... about Criterion's April slate!

Nothing much, just felt there were a few scenes here and there in Birdman paying homage to a few movies in the collection already.

It's more of a self-imposed restriction- I know I'd be opening a Pandora's Box (also a MoC title ) by going multi-region. My wife already thinks that "You have way too many movies!" and "You spend way too much money on Blu-rays!" Her words; not mine. So far I've resisted the Siren's song but..........it's probably just a matter of time.
