Holllllleeeeee crap!!!!

Upgrades of The River, Sullivan's Travels, and The Friends of Eddie Coyle; first-timers Odd Man Out (not counting the LD) and La silence de la mer; and another Ozu Eclipse set!

All in the same month!

This is officially Criterion's best month of releases!

(Now to check out the announcement on the News page to see how many people say "Haven't heard of any of them"...)

Great month. The River is my highlight. I really didnt expect another Renoir so soon, given that Partie de campagne is coming next month. Le silence de la mer is one of my favourite films, but I already have the Masters Of Cinema release, and the same goes for Sullivan's Travels, but I'm tempted to double dip on the Arrow for that as the commentary with Noah Baumbach sounds excellent. Odd Man Out is fantastic news (though feels like old news, given it's early appearance this afternoon!), while The Friends Of Eddie Coyle is something I've been keen to see upgraded for a while.

It's hard to pick a highlight out of that slate, but The River was one of my Top 3 Criterion upgrade wishes (the others being Kwaidan and The Human Condition).

It's great. Fairly unusual for a Criterion release too, in that it's original poster art.

So happy for the new Ozu Eclipse set . I had the BFI version saved in my Amazon UK cart for a few years now, glad I held off (it's region 2, so not ideal)

I can think of fewer things more tantalising on Blu-ray than flagship Renoir and Technicolor!

I wish Criterion threw in two additional films on the Ozu set: the surviving excerpts of Fighting Friends Japanese Style and Kagamijishi. It's nice that all of Ozu's surviving films are on DVD or Blu-ray but to get just these two you have to spring for two expensive sets (this and this). At least, as far as I know.

It would be nice to have Ozu's complete surviving works on disc for reference. I might have to shell out, I guess.

Cries and Whispers is a no-brainer (sorry I did not notice it at all last month.. probably because of Knight of Cups )

For the rest (the real ones of April) I already have most of them
- Sullivan's Travels (Arrow)
- The River (Carlotta)
- Odd Man Out (Elephant using the ITV Studios restoration)

but I will still check if it the double dip is needed..

This is an AMAZING month for me. Why? See this post:

(And not Criterion likely releases: Taking of Pelham One Two Three and The Long Goodbye)

Both Sullivan's Travels AND Odd Man Out were in my shopping basket and I had to remove a couple of films! That is the exact opposite of what I thought would happen!

Amazing!

Sullivan's Travels - Actually one of my all time favourite movies and the only reason I didn't buy it yesterday is the price went up by ten pounds. :P (I swear while it was in my cart even) Can't WAIT for this one.

Le Silence de la Mer - Unfamiliar with it. Interested maybe? Will wait and see.

The Friends of Eddie Coyle - Fantastic film! Definite buy!

Odd Man Out - Again, I nearly bought this yesterday! Can't wait!

The River - Not familiar with it either, but it sounds great.

Eclipse Series 42: Silent Ozu—Three Crime Dramas - I've barely touched the sets I have, so it's not high on my list, but it does sound like a really great set.

I notice all of the new releases list under Special Features:
Plus: An essay by.......

Is that just a subtle way of saying "Leaflet"?

I love Ozu but his silent films are wildly inferior to his sound ones.

Odd Man Out is the only one I'll buy from the new announcements. Renoir is a possibility too I suppose.

Unfaithfully Yours was a 20th Century-Fox production and they still own the rights. The film was originally supposed to reunite Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison, who had co-starred the year before in The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. But Tierney went on suspension for refusing to make The Walls of Jericho and Chicken Every Sunday, so Linda Darnell inherited her role. Ultimately, the film didn't do as well financially as Fox had hoped.

Sturges' next feature at Fox was supposed to be his years-in-the-planning production of The Matrix (he had first conceived it back in the early 1930's), and Gene Tierney was again supposed to star. But that one ran into problems during pre-production, and Sturges instead made The Beautiful Blonde From Bashful Bend with Betty Grable; when it tanked at the box office, Sturges' brief sojourn at Fox came to a screeching halt.

I'd love Criterion to upgrade Unfaithfully Yours to blu-ray, but first I want them to tackle The Lady Eve, my favorite of all the films that Sturges directed, and my favorite of Barbara Stanwyck's comedies. (His screenplay for Remember the Night is my favorite among those he wrote but did not direct.)

What a month.

I've imported Silence and Sullivan in the last month though, so I won't be picking those up. Decent chance I end up owning the rest though.

Odd Man Out is on itunes to rent for those who are unsure about it. James Mason is really great in it. The Third Man is one of my favorites, so it's hard for me to say if you'd like it.

(Okay, now you've got me picturing William Demarest or Akim Tamiroff playing Agent Smith...)

Ozu...Renoir...Melville...Reed... Coyle and Sullivan's..
What's not to like?? (Don't worry, The Fisher King will come)
This is probably the best month of releases in a very long time!!
Frankly, this is what Criterion is all about and has been for many years now. They occasionally throw in the popular title for the masses, but IMO this is why people buy their films and are loyal to what they put out. Honestly, if none of this months releases interest you, then you are probably looking in the wrong direction.....
