Who deleted my funny posts that came after that dude talking about his steelbooks? And why is his ugly post to Volume11 still up then? I didn't say anything about him so I don't know what happened.

I understand why you're offended Hep, but you have to admit the fanaticism of some of your fellow SteelBook collectors can come across as a bit creepy. I mean, to be so excited not about the movie but the kind of box it comes in does sorta fall into Comic Book Guy/40 Year Old Virgin territory. That said, excepting the cost involved it's no worse than the puzzling obsession with slipcovers and digibooks.

In general, people get offended too easily, especially on these here internets

Atleast this thread stays away from the ubiquitous epic, fail, etc....

Penton and others mentioned that Criterion are posting are most likely of the QC process, checking color grading etc. Do they often post pics while work is being done?

The same can be said for those who feel Criterion can do no wrong, and everything they release is a "must own"

I certainly plan on buying everything they put out on Blu-ray, it's partially the "completeist" attitude, and a very small show of support for what they do...... This isn't to say that a better edition of anything they release isn't possible.....

The Studio Canal release of The Third Man may disprove your theory.

Not that it could get much better than the Criterion.

I agree completely. I love what Criterion does and will buy a movie I wouldn't normally want that much just to support them. I wish all my favorite movies would get The Treatment. But IMO some of their titles are real stinkers.

How about "M"?
Extras aside IMO the UK BD has clearly better image quality than the Criterion release.

To me the Criterion looks slightly better but that's a matter of taste. I'm definitely picking this one up.

I thought the flesh tones were more on key, besides if people want to give it the BFI treatment they can just tweak their color settings etc.

The Red Shoes and Black Narcissus are two titles I would love to find early on a shelf at Best Buy for sure.

Well I place MoC ( Masters of Cinema ) up there with Criterion when it comes to the quality of their releases. Even then its hit or miss on which is better when they both release a title. It's a shame though the MoC version of M is region locked.

I don't know about "clearly." It has a slightly higher bit rate but the picture is too bright and washed out, with no contrast. I'd say Criterion's edition has the better image quality. But not "clearly."

The Borders sale is 50% off of the list price of ANY blu-ray disc, in-store. Including Criterions. If there's an OOP disc you want to try and grab for $20 before the B&N sale starts, checking your local Borders stores might be a good alternative.

I just saw copies of Pierrot le fou and The Man Who Fell to Earth at my local store. You can easily call ahead if you don't want to make a wasted trip.

I've just got back with THE LEOPARD and RED DESERT under my arm for some $48 for both.

There were posters with the 50% off promo on the blu-ray shelves, although I had to tell the girl at the register about it, for they were not aware of it.

I don't know of any exclusions for Criterion or multi-disc sets, but I am glad I got them by surprise, just in case!

My copy of "Mystery Train" finally arrived in the UK. Once you factor in the high RRP, international postage and import tax, it must be the most expensive BD I've ever bought. Lucky it's one of my all-time favourite films, and I'm just very excited about seeing Criterion's transfer.

As a BIG fan of this film...I'm very happy for you!

It's a GREAT transfer...ENJOY!...It's worth every penny you paid for it!

Unfortunately, the Borders in my area has a VERY poor selection of Criterion BD titles...I'll probably stop by my store sometime tomorrow...but I don't expect to find anything. The last time I got lucky there was Wings of Desire for 40% off. The only other title I've seen there lately was Bottle Rocket.

I've got Night Train to Munich coming tomorrow from NetFlix, so I'll be VERY psyched to see that for the first time (I plan on buying it from B & N ). Red Desert is in my queue and I hope to get that next...Everlasting Moments as well.

As we speak...I'm streaming the English version of The Leopard (about 40 mins. through it) and I can't wait to see what the Italian version of this looks like on BD. NetFlix still has the BD of this listed as "unknown" and I can only stream the English version.

Does anyone know if Burt Lancaster speaks Italian in the Italian version, or does he only speak English? Just curious.

This film reminds me a lot of Barry Lyndon, as far as the treatment of "period" costumes, settings, etc. and the cinematography. REALLY looking forward to getting this!
