Don't Look Now is excellent and nothing like his other films. It's one of the most frightening films I've ever seen maybe more so because of the hectic-ness than anything else. For what it's worth, I didn't see the end coming, so that's always a positive thing.

It is nothing like Straw Dogs. It's more of a mystery.

Looks like it to me? What the hell?

Honestly, I'd have no problem with the leaflets if it were for artwork purposes. FOr instance, if every film came with a big poster folded up I'd understand. But the problem for me lies within the content. The way some of them have been laid out makes them ridiculous to read from. Reading film essays off of something like this in these layouts is almost funny sometimes, I don't know if you guys read them but I have found myself whipping them out like a towel or something to straighten out. Not even casually like a newspaper really weird change for me. I wish they'd stick with the classic plastic case and booklet for the majority of releases, even though I have some old DVDs from them with inserts that unfold like this

As far as other Nicolas Roeg films go...
Straw Dogs is masterful cinema. People may dislike it for many reasons, but it's a complete film class and would likely crack my top 25 of all time.

Nicolas Roeg, to me, has a style that allows him to bounce around in different genres without losing anything. His films have an incredibly emotional effect while also being entertaining as hell. Something like Bad Timing - it's so devastating and ugly but why do I want to watch it again?

to derail this thread back to Solaris 2002 for those interested …..
[Show spoiler]
So I had ignored this film and had no desire to see it but some of you here have praised it, which made me rent it from a local library. To me, Soderberg streamlined the book and Tarkovsky film in every way, making the pace and impact rather breezy in comparison. This version makes the central story much easier to grasp for even the casual moviegoer, but Soderberg also adds things as he takes away. I liked some aspects of this approach, but what is in my opinion a much more literal, immediately giving interpretation, loses much of the introspection the Tarkovsky film gave me. The first 50 or so minutes of the original, even the car ride so many detest; I miss them here. The setup becomes more jarring and the film loses a layer it doesn't gain back. It made me question the backstory during the remake whereas I never have before. Becoming freshly invested again in this film, the ending was handled in such an awkward way for me that it was more of an empty question than Tarkovsky left us with. The Soderberg remake has such excellent lighting and cinematography that it was not hard to get through, but on top of what my mind was going through while watching it - I really didn't like Clooney or Davies in these roles. The main ideas present in the original film are mostly present here, and this is a heavy affair which I hope at worst would make viewers aware of the original, but if it stood alone it would not be remembered in the same way at least with me. It's good, but not in the same way. I definitely got into this flick more than I would have imagined and thank you guys for making me check it out, and while I still can;t say it was warranted to be remade it certainly isn't as bad as I thought it would be.

Okay, I'm definitely committing to Don't Look Now. Any film that is heartily recommended by The Great Owl and iScottie is bound to be something I want to experience.

And I'll definitely keep an eye out for Walkabout as well.

Thank both of you for taking the time to provide me with your feedback. Much appreciated!

You are certainly welcome. In case you are still hesitant, it is available for rental on Amazon Instant Video.

My version was a poor, standard definition, censored version, so I cannot wait to see it in HD.

Criterion changed their Facebook cover photo to a screenshot from Onibaba. I wonder if this could mean anything?

Could it be a sign The Third Man is coming back into print?

I picked up a used copy of 'Anatomy of a Murder' today that was missing the booklet. A while back someone mentioned that you could email a certain somebody at Criterion and order replacement booklets...?

Ummm... well.... we need multiple covers, like comics! Quadruple, SE, gatefold releases. But your covers are the best of course!! And so is your sense of humor!

A quick non-Criterion related post, self-serving really... I reached Power Member this morning with post #1500. It's not important, but still cool. Most of the posts are from this forum, and it is extremely fun, and informational, chatting with everyone here. Who knew when I bought my first Criterion many, many years ago, without knowing anything about Criterion, that it would began a new obsession with dvds and blu-rays.

Looking forward to many more years and thousands of thousands of posts with all of you here! Now, back to our regularly scheduled, on-topic, posts....
