Just finally picked this up from Amazon. I don't know what took me so long. I guess I was just trying to get more new stuff, I really don't know. Anyways, really looking forward to it.

Not sure I can AFFORD the stuff I'm buying, but that's a different question!

Quick question: I understand Barnes & Noble is starting a B1G1 DVD/BD sale starting tomorrow. Does that typically include Criterions? I think I've taken part in one of their B1G1 sales in the past (not their Criterion sale) and I can't remember if they include Criterions or not.

First of all, welcome! It's nice to know that you're going to be joining the discussion.

I wish that I could answer your question affirmatively, but at this point, I'm just crossing my fingers that Criterion titles will be included when the B&N sale starts tomorrow. I did notice that Amazon has begun putting some Criterion titles on sale (Shoah is 50% off, for example), but I don't know if they're doing that in anticipation of the B&N sale or the upcoming February sale at the Criterion website, or both ...

Thanks for the replies, guys!

I guess we'll all find out tomorrow (or tonight, assuming the sale kicks off at midnight online).

Every Man for Himself was certainly...different...

I'm not sure if I really liked it, but I certainly didn't dislike it. There was something about it that kept me going, although nothing that I saw was anything particularly special, in my opinion.

One of the best scenes in the film, though, is located near the end. It pretty much summarizes the entire title of the film and captures the individuality that exists for its entire duration.

I'm glad I was able to rent it on iTunes before committing to a purchase.

Just finished up Kino's blu of Yesterday Today & Tomorrow. Its an excellent release btw. It left me wondering if anyone knew about any hang ups that would keep Criterion from releasing a blu of Two Women? De Sica & Loren are two of my favs and this movie is so AMAZING it deserves a criterion blu release.

If you love Godard, I don't see why you wouldn't like it. I enjoy some of his films, but I wouldn't consider myself the biggest fan of him.

Great:
Breathless
Band of Outsiders
Vivre sa Vie

Good:
Pierrot le Fou

Okay:
Every Man for Himself

Eh:
Week End

Not a fan of Week End either but I would put Pierrot le Fou as a great so we seem to mostly agree. Oh well even if its not my favorite Godard Im sure I wont hate it.

Please do yourself a favor, and see Contempt. I think it's Godard's best film, and as big of a fan as I am, that's saying something.

I'd also put CONTEMPT at the very top of the list for Godard (and Criterion's DVD is better than the disappointingly shoddy Lionsgate Blu-ray). FEMME MARIEE is another I'd put in either the "great" or "good" category. Generally Godard's films from 1965 and earlier are worth seeing, and the later ones are more hit or miss or barely watchable.

The Barnes and Noble sale has started. Unfortunately, there's just a few eligible titles.

As time went on, he obviously became more didactic in his approach. Stuff like Film Socialisme is likely to completely, utterly not work for a viewer. We're talking about stuff with absolutely ZERO narrative structure. Personally, I ... kinda ... liked it. I didn't hate it, but I'm still not really sure how I felt about it. I very much need to see it again.

As to Femme Mariee I can't believe that I'm going to say this, but -- I haven't seen it. That's something that needs to be rectified, clearly.

And I've been waiting for Criterion to upgrade Contempt forever. The DVD is pretty damned good, when you think about it. But I just wonder how truly awesome a full-out, majestic BD release would be.

I wonder if they would have this in store which would likely open it up to everything.

Watership Down Blu-ray REVIEW

With two excellent new interviews with Martin Rosen and Guillermo del Toro.

Pro-B

p.s.
I am sorry for the delay. Due to medical issues, I have not been able to view screeners or write during the last 2 1/2 days. Let's hope that all is back to normal this week.

Hey, get better.

And that's an order!

No, really, we love your reviews, but we'd rather see you healthy than anything. Take care of yourself first and foremost.

Don't get your hopes up. I asked about the BOGO when I was in the store last night. My guy said "They'll be over there," indicating one of the small sale display tables.

What a worthless "sale".

Conventional wisdom goes that Godard became less interesting and/or accessible after the 60's. He was pretty much ignored in the 90's and made his 'big' comeback with Notre Musique which put him back on people's radars again 10 years ago.

There is no doubt about it though: the further he moved away from genre, the less popular he became.

Is this a bad thing? I must admit that I prefer some of his later films to his earlier ones. For example, I'd rather watch Goodbye To Language than Band Of Outsiders, but I understand that I'm in a minority.
