Nice! I need to get a new frame for mine. In the summer months my frames would fall of the wall. I need some stronger adhesive.

I love Mallick films (The Thin Red Line is one of my favourite movies), but I admit the trailer to Knight of Cups didn't make me want to see the movie.. On the contrary.

The trailer for Knight of Cups is almost as good as the one for Tree of Life. Initial reactions for a new Malick do little for me. Just want that release date already.

Yeah, it's a pricey process, but it gets the job done. It takes a lot for me to commit to buying a poster.

I saw "Seconds." It's said that it's part of a paranoia trilogy. What is the paranoia about in "Seconds?" Is one of the characters paranoid? Where is the irrational fear?

Default OOP Bunuel on Criterion Hulu

Don't know if this has been already mentioned, but...

Was trying out the search feature on Amazon Fire iPhone app, and tried a search for "bunuel". It did find the Hulu Criterion titles (Exterminating Angel, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, Simon of the Desert), and it also found Tristana and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. I thought those would be Amazon rentals, but nope, they're on Hulu.

But they're still listed on Criterion's site as being out of print, and no indication of being on Hulu. Went to Hulu's site, did a search and there they were.

Not sure what's up, but maybe some discs are coming soon...

I had never heard of Frankenheimer's "paranoia trilogy" until you asked this question, and I did an internet search. Very interesting!

Even more interesting were the theories that various writers had applied to the films, individually and as a trio. Apparently, individual people would answer your questions about Seconds differently:
[Show spoiler]for example, one writer thought that the paranoia centered around a crisis of masculine identity; another identified it as an irrational fear of aging; yet another saw it as the self-destruction of a man due to his own ego, and his willingness to sell his soul.

Now I'm going to have to watch the film again, and form my own opinion.

I think it's a great movie, but the first half or so is mostly "Shaky Camera" work, so if that bothers you, it's something to consider.... also, it's not an "action" movie despite what the description may lead you to believe.....

Again, it's a great movie though
agree

The trailers for Malick's films are better than most films.

For sure! Malick's trailers are great little short films in themselves too.

A friend of mine saw Jupiter Ascending and said it was so bad that he nearly walked out of the theater with his friend. I'm definitely going to stay far away from seeing this film in public...maybe I'll, ya know, "rent the DVD". Or better yet, borrow it from the library for F-R-E-E.

Of those Criterion never released Tristana, and only Discreet Charm is OOP, but it appears that while it is on hulu it doesn't have the criterion logo unfortunately.

I've never really liked the 'paranoia trilogy' moniker.

Sure, one could make a case that The Manchurian Candidate was born of Cold War paranoia and that Seven Days in May was born of paranoia about Cold War paranoia but given the times some degree of anxiety (both about the Soviets themselves and our reactions and overreactions to them) wasn't entirely unreasonable. I mean, I wouldn't say Dr. Strangelove or Fail-Safe were paranoid.

But change 'paranoia trilogy' to 'anxiety trilogy' and Seconds fits a lot better.

From The Invasion of the Body Snatchers to C.C. Baxter's existence as a faceless cog in an insurance company anxiety over loss of identity and individuality was a pretty fruitful theme in the fifties and sixties.

Would these two BDs be a good blind buy at that price for a fan of Tarkovsky's Solaris (who has not seen any other Tarkovsky films)?
Depends on what it is about Solaris you liked. The Sacrifice is an amazing movie, but it's super slow, almost snail-pace slow, and very methodical. So, if that's your cup of tea, then certainly both for $26 is a great deal.

Slightly disappointed to see that two of the Beach Party movies, Muscle Beach Party and the masterpiece of the saga Beach Blanket Bingo coming to Blu-ray... my wildest dream was that Criterion would release a box set of them. They're certainly an "important" moment of American 1960s culture, along with other surf fare like Gidget and Where the Boys Are.

Mixed reviews for Malick films are to be expected. That BBC reviewer had his fangs out. It's only one person. I think there was a critic that called Sgt. Pepper "banal and ultimately fraudulent". Go figure.

One reviewer was criticising the film, because they felt the strippers shoes were wrong in the film XD

Such a joke lol.

The buzz in my social circle is much stronger, with nigh on all of my pals that caught it at the weekend falling hard for it. I was in the minority in my love for To The Wonder amongst this lot too, which is a good sign as they could have gone either way. I can't wait.
