Yeah, unless, like someone else said, he didn't "get it." Malick uses theme and subtext to relay information, and not everything has to be "presented" matter-of-factly for ideas to be embedded. It's quite possible that he indeed missed out on things, and it's also quite possible he didn't. But his tone and attitude of the writing suggests that, even if he were to infer the fact that some celebrities indeed lead solitary lives, he wouldn't have liked it anyway, because it's not a stretch for anyone involved in the entertainment industry to infer that. It's pretty widely known.

Just like how I read his review to be this way, you read it differently. We infer something completely differently, just like audiences will probably infer different things from an abstract film like this one.

sure, that's fine. except for the part where you say that the reviewer doesn't and has never liked Malick because that has been proven false.

sure, that's fine. and maybe we, too, will have to agree to disagree, but I don't catch that vibe at all. its a film review. he uses fancy dismissive adjectives.. I'm not looking into it any more than that.

Criterion posted this image earlier today:

The New Line Cinema Blu-ray is now currently OOP. Seeing how WB has a new licensing agreement with them I wonder if this film would be a candidate for an upgrade?

I think it's wonderful that Criterion is offering The Divorce of Lady X, a British romantic comedy filmed in beautiful "candybox" Technicolor, through Hulu for Valentine's Day. Released in 1938, the film teams Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier, who would star together the following year in Samuel Goldwyn's classic, Wuthering Heights.

The Divorce of Lady X has a gorgeous opening credit sequence featuring hot neon-pink writing on a lustrous midnight blue background, and the rest of the film is also a treat for the eye. I'd love to see this one added to the Collection; I'm sure it would be a knock-out on blu-ray!

LOL!

I'm trying to imagine what this version of Thunderdome would entail, exactly.

This week I knocked out two Rumer Godden novels: The River and Black Narcissus. I'm anxious to revisit The River once the blu-ray is released.

I don't know what more I can say about Black Narcissus. The novel is just as great as the film. It was incredible reading the text with imagery already in my head. Powell and Pressburger changed a few things for the film but it's largely very faithful to the text.

The one big thing P&P changed for the film was
[Show spoiler]Sister Ruth sending out for civilian clothes and applying lipstick. This doesn't happen in the novel. In fact, Sister Ruth is still in her nun's garb and veiled when she tries to kill Sister Clodaugh.

Now that's a very interesting change indeed! I think the P&P version was the right decision for the film because it was so visually arresting; of course that wouldn't have been such a factor in the novel. Since you've experienced the story in both media, would you care to comment on which version you prefer, if indeed you have a preference?

A Jeopardy!-style film-themed quiz game that incorporates an aerial death joust... That would be awesome lol

I checked out Polanski's 'Macbeth' from the library the other day and thoroughly enjoyed it, so I ended up snagging it yesterday evening along with one of my favorite Hitchcock films, 'The Lady Vanishes'. I also found a used copy of Bergman's 'Summer Interlude' for $16, but know absolutely nothing about the film, so I had them place it on hold. I was curious if anyone on here had seen it before, and how/if it compares to 'Wild Strawberries' or 'The Seventh Seal', two of his films I've actually seen and liked?

Both work on their own terms. I think
[Show spoiler]using Godden's version of Sister's Ruth attempted murder of Sister Clodaugh would be too startling to audiences back then. "A nun attacking a nun? Who ever heard of such nonsense!". P&P's Ruth was no longer a nun at at the end. I think the dress and lipstick underscores this and it works for the film.
