I believe Taschen already released the exhaustive compendium for Kubrick's Napoleon.

Of course, since that edition was ridiculously limited and overpriced, you can always just grab the regular hardcover edition, which is what I chose to get.

I've not been wowed in a while, and tbh I'm not actually that excited about the announcement, whenever it will be done...

With today being a holiday here in the U.S., will the releases be announced today, or tomorrow?

Here's what I hope to see announced:

Bicycle Thieves
McCabe and Mrs. Miller
Midnight Cowboy
Mulholland Drive
Red Beard
Le Samourai

3 upgrades, 3 new to the Collection

FYE: Don't know, I don't buy from them.

Barnes & Noble: Probably July.

Criterion: Before the end of the month.

Not necessarily. I imagine rights issues are a part of it, as well as condition of the masters. Keep in mind that they also released The Killer and Hard-Boiled on both LD and DVD, as well as both Supercop and Why Has Bodhi-Dharma Left for the East on LD. All of these are films they lost the rights to. I'd love to see them regain the rights to Bodhi-Dharma, and release it on Blu-ray; I have no idea if Milestone still has the rights to it, though.

But it's true that all of these are slight next to what they've released for Japanese films. I'm rather surprised they haven't managed to pry some of Zhang Yimou's earlier (pre-Hero) films out of Sony and MGM. And I'm hoping that now that Kino is letting go of Fallen Angels and Happy Together that the other early Wong Kar-Wai films they've released will likewise be available, and that Criterion will snatch them up.

Yet another film that they released on LD, but never released on DVD. I imagine they don't have the rights to it anymore. At least two other companies have released it on DVD here in the States, the more recent one being five years ago. That company, Oscilloscope, has released about a dozen and a half Blu-rays since then, so maybe they'll release I Am Cuba at some point. On the other hand, all but one of their BDs are films made in the last half-dozen years, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

Well, it's one of those "funny" holidays that not everyone takes off (though government offices and banks do), but they've skipped over Presidents Day before, so I imagine they will this year as well.

So, probably tomorrow.

My announcement wishlist, just for fun...

In a Lonely Place
Alfred Hitchcock's I Confess
Akira Kurosawa's Stray Dog
Hiroshima Mon Amour
Ghost World
Equinox (Blu-ray upgrade)

C'mon Criterion... If Hoop Dreams can receive a Blu-ray upgrade, then Equinox can receive one as well. It's a crazy fun movie that needs a bigger audience.

Makes me wonder if the owners of the Kar-wai films have been wanting quadruple the price or something to renew the licences. Criterion, Kino, and Artificial Eye have all had Kar-wai films go OOP in the fairly recent past.

Greed (von Stroheim)
The Mother and the Wh0re (Eustache)
Spring in a Small Town (Fei Mu)
Beau Travail (Denis)
City of Sadness (Hou Hsiao-hsien)
Already have the UK dvd of Beau Travail, and unless something is announced soon will be picking up the UK dvd of Spring In A Small Town, but I still would love to see this announcement. Nice choices.

- Mulholland Drive (David Lynch)
- Kwaidan (Masaki Kobayashi)
- After Hours (Martin Scorsese)
- Vargtimmen (Ingmar Bergman)
- Elevator to the Gallows (Louis Malle)

Not necessarily Criterion-related, but some might be interested.

Louis Jourdan passed away this weekend at the age of 93. Jourdan starred in Letter from an Unknown Woman, Octopussy, Swamp Thing, Gigi, and several others.

"Spend the money quickly, Mr. Bond."

Not to be confused with the singer/bandleader Louis Jordan.
