I really want to see Mulholland Drive and After Hours.

I'm also curious to see Inside Llewyn Davis. I can imagine Criterion piling on some nice supplements for their first Coen Brothers release.

Thanks for the post Owl. That's incredibly sad. It's hard to picture him as being 93, when I think of him it's always as a Bond villian.

Forever and always wanting Rocco and His Brothers. Aching for that New World release, and an upgrade of The Passion of Joan of Arc would be nice.

All of these are films they lost the rights to. I'd love to see them regain the rights to Bodhi-Dharma, and release it on Blu-ray; I have no idea if Milestone still has the rights to it, though.

But it's true that all of these are slight next to what they've released for Japanese films. I'm rather surprised they haven't managed to pry some of Zhang Yimou's earlier (pre-Hero) films out of Sony and MGM. And I'm hoping that now that Kino is letting go of Fallen Angels and Happy Together that the other early Wong Kar-Wai films they've released will likewise be available, and that Criterion will snatch them up.
I'm aware that Criterion can't just release whatever they want and there are always rights issues involved but c'mon, the paltry amount of Asian cinema they've released that's not from Japan makes me think they either aren't even trying or, more likely, just aren't as interested in film from those other countries. And I'm referring to Blu-ray, because it's been a long time since Criterion only released DVDs and might as well have been back in the Stone Age when they released LDs.

As Tears Go By and Days of Being Wild are in need of good Blu-ray releases (there's a reason I haven't imported those titles) so yeah, it'd be nice if Criterion would pick them up. Although I'd be happy with Kino upgrading them to Blu-ray, which I'm surprised they never did.

At this point, any non-Japanese Asian cinema Criterion releases will have my attention.

Don't all of these except Mulholland Drive have Region A releases already? Wouldn't it be better for Criterion to give films that haven't already received the Blu-ray treatment a chance?

I am guessing...

In A Lonely Place
Two days, one night
The New World (mayyyybe)

Wes Anderson releases have come in May-August, so the time is ripe for Moonrise, but I feel it's still too early.

We must also consider they were a pretty different company back then, maybe because of some different management, maybe because of the reputation they've built over the years, I don't know. The Criterion of the '90s was interested in releasing a Godzilla box set on LaserDisc, the Criterion of today feels only the 1954 original is "worthy" of their attention.

Besides adding some supplements, what possible benefit is there to Criterion releasing a film which has already received a Blu-ray release with good picture and sound quality?

True.... but they are all "on the list" at some point, or rumored. And I really want Mulholland and Leaving Las Vegas. Just me being selfish!

I'd ordinarily agree with this line of thinking, however the only cut of The New World currently available on Blu-ray is an "extended cut" of dubious origin. I'd like to see Malick's theatrical cut or a proper director's cut on disc, which is presumably what Criterion will be releasing.

Good point.

It's already been confirmed, and there are several cuts Criterion could include that have been unavailable or scattered across multiple regions.

Oh, I didn't realize the "extended cut" wasn't Malick's "director's cut". In that case, I can see the justification.

Mulholland Drive is my most-wanted title. Both because I'd like to finally retire my DVD and because I'm sick of everyone asking for it, including myself.

I'm guessing for May:

Limelight
Othello (Welles)
Two Days, One Night
The Killers (1946/1964) (upgrade)
Elevator to the Gallows (upgrade)
Merchant of Four Seasons (Fassbinder)

So true, so true. I feel like a broken record. And my dvd only has one chapter, which is kind of annoying. Never bothered to see if that was the case with anyone else.

That was actually per Lynch's mandate. He didn't want anyone watching select scenes from his film. It was either watch the entire thing from start to finish or don't watch it at all.

Thanks, I was wondering, but never did any research on it. And I can see him saying that... sounds like him. Wonder if he'd ask Criterion to do the same if they do a release.
