This is a really dumb post.

Over the moon about Limelight. I just watched Downey Jnr as him and was craving more BDs of the legend that is Chaplin.

I guess I'm the only one who loves the Limelight cover?

Then you generally shouldn't get too excited about Criterion's monthly line ups at all.

The Women is a terrific film in all respects. By all means watch it, and not just for Paulette Goddard.

I know we all want our favorite films to come out in great Criterion Blu Ray releases, but just remember, there was a time when you had never seen any films in the Criterion Collection. There's lots of great films to discover still!

I don't know if this was in part directed at me, or not. But if it was ...

I wasn't complaining. I was saying that none of these titles interest me. Well, the Fassbinder maybe. But beyond that, I would rather spend my money on the titles I don't yet own than on any of these.

But I am sort of on a few month long stretch of not being excited about any announcement. And that's saddening. It's not a big deal. I have a lot of stuff I need to watch, a lot of stuff I still need to buy. It's just that I look forward to things and hope for them, then I am disappointed when they aren't announced.

I don't see what's wrong with that.

I haven't seen it since it first came out. I wasn't terribly excited about it at the time, mostly because I'm not a fan of Bette Midler. I do recall, though, that it was a better film than I was expecting. Vilmos Zsigmond's cinematography was particularly astonishing.

(1) Three of the six from this month's announcements are mainstream Hollywood films.

(2) None of the foreign films are obscure, and only one can be argued to be an "art film".

The number of Criterion DVDs I blind-bought back in the day is staggering. Some of those are ones I would love to see updated, which is part of my disappointment.

I think Criterion releases more cult classic than art house movies. Even Bergman doesn't qualify as art house any more.

As a gigantic fan of both RWF and Lynch, your posts make me want to hit the ignore button on you! It's insanely hypocritical as well as in extremely poor taste to post what you did for the reasons you say you did it. Who cares who is obscure, who is clamoring for what, who has risen in popularity and who hasn't? If someone post that something you like is shit, why not explain why it isn't? Perhaps if people did this opinions would be changed, things would be learned and good cinema will not be obscured. Putting down one artist to hold up another is wallowing in the same shit you're arguing against.

I think these titles are the most interesting of the year so far from CC, and hope that you guys check some of these flicks out if you're smelling something foul...

The only one there I've never seen is The Rose. Honestly, it still doesn't peak my interest but I'll add it to the list and catch it sometime soon before its release. Fingers crossed for McCabe & Mrs Miller that it still might be in the works

I wouldn't care one bit if they had 6 months of just upgrades.

The Rose will be mine. Midler is fantastic and I can't wait to watch this with amazing pq and aq.

And glad to add another Fassbinder to my collection as well.

For me Limelight is the only 100% certain buy.

I will probably pick up Make Way for Tomorrow too.

Man, that is a depressing pile of movies this month!

Think Janis Joplin biography with an amazing performance from Bette Midler. Excellent concert filming, too.

Same here, there have been one or two hear and there, but not an entire month I got all excited about. The last few I got really excited about were Time Bandits, The Night Porter, and Watership Down.

We all have our good and bad months for releases. It saves me money here lately.

Even though I'm not interested in any of the titles, that was the first thing that jumped out at me - how uninspired and drab the cover art is. One looks vaguely familiar, as if it's a retread (Make Way for Tomorrow), three look completely generic (The Rose, SoS, TMo4S), and two (The Confession and Limelight) are downright creepy.

Especially Limelight, great Caesar's ghost that is awful. If I liked the film, I'd have to burn the artwork and keep the disc in the clear plastic case.

Companion piece Crisis. They were released on DVD at the same time. Drew was a pretty significant figure in documentary film.
