I have seen the film and own it on region B. It's a very interesting 70's SF film that is out there in imagination and feel, not perhaps so much on coherence. Great lead performance from David Bowie. For far less than that money you could order a region B blu-ray player and a copy of the superb UK release from Studio Canal, which has excellent AV and a solid set of extras (and which currently goes for a measly ~7GBP)

It's so expensive because it is a Criterion out of print which is still in demand.

Look at Criterion's Blu-ray for The Third Man. A new copy was over $300 recently....

Watched Fellini Satyricon last night - it was alright (didn't love it, didn't hate it), and the whole time I couldn't stop thinking of Pasolini's Trilogy of Life (which came just a couple years after).

It's a highly sought after out-of-print Blu-ray title because it's an amazing science fiction film made even more amazing if you are a fan of David Bowie and aware of his real-life celebrity situation during the time of production.

Do not despair, and stay positive, though. I kept searching, and I recently grabbed a "Used - Like New" copy on Amazon for roughly $75 a couple months back.

Wow, this blu-ray sure went up in value over the last few years. I remember when it was going for new for around $120 at the most. Now its shot up to over $250. I was lucky to buy it when it was out of print for $60 total in nearly pristine/barely used condition.

I have a DVD copy of The Man Who Fell To Earth. It's a great movie, but I find it to be an almost exhausting experience when watching it. I find that to be the case with much of the period aesthetic of experimental 1970s movies.

My DVD came packaged with the Walter Tevis novel. It's a fantastic book, and I recommend it to anyone interested in the film!

This is so spot on. At the prices people pay for out of print Criterion titles, they could get a region fre player and the film. In the case of The Man Who Fell To Earth, the Optimum transfer is just as good as on Criterions disc if not better. I have it and it looks awesome. Both reviews on blu-ray.com and DVDBeaver say it bests the CC disc. Why someone would pay $200 for it is crazy. I wish I had one, I would pay my electric bill with it!

Maybe. There have been rumors of a Criterion re-release, but they're just rumors as far as I know. I'm not holding my breath for it, but I'm not spending $200 for a single blu ray, either. Going region-free is getting more and more tempting.

No one a forcing you too but look at the prices of the original Salo - pretty sure that's expensive now

If Salo on Criterion went out of print soon, would we all be grabbing that before it goes up in value? Even if the subject matter doesn't appeal to some of us? I admit, I probably would, mainly for the collector value.

79/100

I missed a few simply due to lack of proper spelling.

No. After watching a 720p video of Salo on YouTube, I've made peace with the fact that I do not need to own it.

Which is what I always remind myself when I see any collectibles (videos, books, etc.) offered at ridiculously high prices: "Asking isn't getting." If you visit eBay with any regularity, you'll soon see the same old overpriced items relisted over and over and over again because the seller is waiting for a buyer who has more money than sense to cave in and buy it.

I've learned throughout the years, that if I'm patient enough, I'll eventually find what I'm looking for at a reasonable price (or I'll decide that I don't need it that badly after all).

Just because sellers list the price as $250 doesn't mean they are all selling for $250. Value comes from actual sale price, not what someone thinks it's worth.

I got 87 but I was seriously struggling with spelling and the time limit, that whole thing made my heart rate go up considerably. As soon as I realized it was counting down I took it way more serious than I should have

As far as the oop thing, I understand if you are collecting it like some museum piece you'd expect to pay high prices, which is what you see eBay sellers doing and stuff. I guess that's all that matters anyway is if you are happy with it. Crazy was probably too strong a word but I personally don;t see the point when there's a better option out there

I got 77, and I missed some of the most obvious ones ... directors whose names should have been on the tip of my tongue, like Murnau and Ridley Scott and ... dare I admit it? ... Truffaut.

Despite my utter and complete humiliation, it was fun. Thanks for the link!

Depends on how the new restoration looks, not to mention Criterion's edition will most likely include the Voices of Light score, which is one of my favorite scores ever to a film, silent or not.

The MOC is still a great package, though. But personally, I don't need 3 cuts of the film, especially the shorter one with unnecessary narration.
