A few Criterion films / directors. See how you do.
I got 90 out of 100. Blanked on a couple that I knew and just couldn't recall before time ran out (like the director of Bonnie and Clyde, remembered his name afterward).

Three famous American directors from the 50s-70s that I figured would be there aren't on the list.
[Show spoiler](Robert Wise, Stanley Kramer, John Frankenheimer)

Well I think the question is why is The Man Who Fell to Earth so much more coveted than Pierrot Le Fou or Army of Shadows. I would assume anyone interested in TMWFTE would also enticed by the latter two as well.

Merchants who deal in collectibles are always *******s though. Remember Saturday afternoon outings to the comic book store in middle school?
I remember at the time a Mike Piazza rookie card was listed in the Beckett as being $60-$70, yet a guy in a collectible store was asking a $100.

Is "Vengenance is Mine" worth a blind buy? has anyone seen it?

I loved it and I got it on a blind buy! It is definitely brutal but the lead actor is a tour de force.

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but does anyone have some thoughts on Close-Up and/or Certified Copy? Kiarostami is a big blind spot for me, but I'm hoping to remedy that with the next sale.

I didn't particularly care for it and would always recommend a rental beforehand.

Two of the best films in the entire Collection. Make sure you pick up Like Someone in Love, as well.

It's really good and I really liked it but it didn't totally grab me in the way that would make me tell people 'omg, buy it, buy it, just buy it'.

Well, I see that 'always recommend a rental' policy held up for all of four seconds

Imamura is a director that, for me, Vengeance is Mine would be a thrilling blind buy. In my case he was someone I went out and got all of his films once I saw Profound Desires of the Gods. I guess our divided opinions can't help you here I'd say go for it though

Sorry to derail the conversation, but can anyone list all the films available on Netflix that also happen to be part of the Criterion Collection?

???

I was referring to the rental policy in terms of Vengeance is Mine.

Back to work for me. I'm currently missing my Criterions (and family, of course) while bobbing around in a boat off of the coast of Nova Scotia. Watch Breaking the Waves and think of me....

To be honest, I thought Certified Copy was a huge bore.

Do not despair, and stay positive, though. I kept searching, and I recently grabbed a "Used - Like New" copy on Amazon for roughly $75 a couple months back.
I'm sure one day out of the blue I'll come across someone who is desperate for cash, and pick it up that way. For now though, I'll just rent it from Amazon.

Yeah, I sort of felt Certified Copy to be poor man's Eric Rohmer, although Like Someone in Love I thought was brilliant.

For what it's worth, the Criterion blu-ray release of The Man Who Fell to Earth may be a collector's item, but A) a re-release from Criterion has been rumored and B) the in-print blu-ray release from Optimum is not botched. For some of the other notoriously OOP Criterion titles like Contempt, Pierrot Le Fou, Ran, and The Third Man, the current in print options are botched.

And for Le Cercle Rouge, the Criterion is technically the botched one (Okay, I won't lie, my copy of Le Cercle Rouge is a Criterion, because well, it has a wacky C, but even so). Never mind The Leopard where Criterion didn't even get the aspect ratio right.

I've sort of been watching out for a copy of Le Cercle Rouge. What about the Criterion transfer is botched? (Maybe I shouldn't be trying to find one after all!)
