I remain totally baffled that anybody can legitimately feel "bored" or "couldn't finish" is any actual statement of quality of anything.

I didn't say I was "bored" with any of those films.

What is so difficult to dissect about "I couldn't finish it?" btw... a google search of "statement of quality" generates nothing that seems to remotely describe what I think you are trying to infer.

pretty ironic, no? not exactly a quality statement.

Nothing's worse than coming home from school expecting a flash sale and getting nothing.

Coming home to find that your home was destroyed by a flash flood would be worse, in my opinion.

Back in 2009, my apartment was flooded out in the middle of the day during the big "500 year flood" that hit Atlanta. I was fortunately home that day, because it was a furlough day with government, and I was able to save most of my possessions.

A lot of my neighbors, though, were at work at the time. They arrived home later in the afternoon and were surprised to find that everything that they owned was destroyed, and that they had to move elsewhere.

(I know that this is not Criterion-related, but I figured that perspective might be helpful.)

Well that completely sucks. Never experienced anything that tragic. And my rage for the sale not happening was an exaggeration haha

Of the top 25, I've seen 8 which is light for me usually.

The only one I truly disliked was Snowpiercer...and I wouldn't have rated Grand Budapest that highly either, maybe not even top 25.

My favorite for 2014 would be:

Nightcrawler
Guardians of the Galaxy
Whiplash
Birdman
Gone Girl

I just always keep the Marvel films on my bottom shelf, in case of flood.

You're dead to me now.

Actually, I only have a handful...

Iron Man
Captain America: The First Avenger
The Avengers
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Guardians of the Galaxy

There are quite a few others out there, and they're fun, but they do not merit purchases. I have a few friends who have gone way down the rabbit hole, though, and they even collect the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episodes.

It's cool, though. When I purchased Friday the 13th: The Complete Collection and A Nightmare on Elm Street Collection, I lost the right to poke fun at other people's movie possessions.

If you guys are that desperate for Criterions, purchase them on Amazon or eBay or wait for the Barnes 'N Noble sale.

Stop whining every single day about there not being a flash sale.

I'm getting close to having to do just that because I have the money budgeted for it but it hasn't happened just yet. I'll give it until April, since that's usually been an Amazon sale around then. But as somebody on a strict budget, I can't afford to wait until July. If worst comes to worst, I can cut back drastically on my March/April pre-orders to Nov/December 2015 when I have more capital to use.

And I agree, people should stop complaining.

It also allows a wave of publicity, as all the film afficionado forums and blogs simultaneously and very quickly run a "Criterion's having a sale" article they probably wouldn't if there were plenty of notice.
I don't really see how them announcing today that they're having a sale next Tuesday would change any of that.

Oh I have almost all of them as well, and not just as flood protection.

Common sense tells you that the studios are also spending a lot more to promote the hell out of those films, just based on their placement in that list, which would make them pop up a lot more during your everyday life, i.e. commercials while watching TV, eating at a fast food restaurant that has a promotional tie-in with the release of a film, or hell, looking at a billboard while you're driving down the interstate.
I don't see advertising for comic-book-based movies to any greater degree than anything else. But that's beside the point. The studios might promote any given superhero movie to a greater extent than any given crime thriller, but if there are twice as many crime thrillers being made, you're going to see that many more TV ads (and trailers at the theater, and billboards along the highway).

I remember you wrote about this a few years ago in this thread. And I also recall that you made the decision to store all of your blu-rays/dvds in plastic containers from now on so that way any future flash floods wouldn't inundate your library. Do you still have your collection in plastic bins?

I'm saying you've made no legitimate criticism whatsoever and instead made totally subjective statements that amount to nothing. Your critique/opinion of the film is not rooted in any actual argument and instead on the totally arbitrary fact that you apparently didn't care to stick around for the end.

I know my comments on the superhero movies made me sound like a cantankerous old curmudgeon, but I assure you I'm only 33, and my disdain for superhero movies is based on what I perceive as a lack in quality.

The superhero movie craze seems to have started with the first 'X-Men' movie and Sam Raimi's 'Spider-Man' films. I was already a little leery after the round of 'Batman' movies starring Val Kilmer and George Clooney, but I decided to give them a try.

First off, I didn't mind the 'X-Men' movie. Nothing groundbreaking, but watchable. Then, I saw 'Spider-Man'.

I get that Raimi was trying to translate the feel of a comic book to the big screen, but the films just came off as cheesy to me. I felt like I was watching a PG-rated 'Army of Darkness'.

After that, 'Daredevil'. Forgettable. Ang Lee's 'Hulk'? Garbage. 'Catwoman'? No comment needed. 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen'? 'Fantastic Four'? The cinematic abortions that were 'Thor' and 'Ghost Rider'? 'Green Lantern'? 'Jonah Hex'?
