I actually pulled up Criterion's site to look at it, since the link posted here wouldn't work for me.....

I'm still curious as to why it took so long for them to post it on their site..... you gotta figure it was completed awhile ago

They likely had 2-3 covers they were looking at using and didn't make the final decision until this last week.

It's an exceptional film, incredibly photographed and filmed (it's jaw-dropping how much it looks like old photographs at times). It is the single best example I've seen yet on blu of a film looking EXACTLY how the director intended it to look; the transfer is incredible. Revanche was nominated for an Oscar over it, and while I like that film quite a bit, this is the better film.
Agree... I was surprised to learn that Everlasting Moments was shot and sourced from 16mm.

that's part of the fun! =D

i dig the storytelling part though =).

and Bottle Rocket was also sourced from 16mm and often looks a great deal better than a lot of poorly transferred 35mm

Thanks in advance for checking it out!
Sorry if I bring this up again, but it seems kind of lost...

Not sure if anyone posted these, but if you are interested, DVDBEAVER has screencap/comparisons up for "The Red Shoes" here: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/dvdcompare/redshoes.htm

The film looks amazing, especially compared to the older dvd versions. Can't wait!

Oh yeah... 16mm still has more res than native 1080... but because most people only see older films like Evil Dead they assume all 16mm looks terrible, and because of the smaller source than 35mm. But Super 16mm, due to the single sprocket film, can now be digitally blow up to 35mm with virtually no quality loss (given a high quality digital scan). Just another but of internet misinformation out there...

Has anyone seen the films from the 'Early Bergman' Eclipse collection? I just wanted to know if they were worth a purchase. With the 50% off sale its only $35 for 5 movies..... thats only $7 a movie which is a great price.... so I'll probably end up buying it regardless. I just wanted to know what others thought about it relative to his later films.

This is a confusing review to me. You should explain yourself on this one, because I think you may have lost the point. Where is the misstep??

Man I LOVE that Thin Red Line artwork. Makes me want late Sept. to get here even faster. I'll be glad when the reviews start rollng in. This blu ray is a potential A/V treat in addition to being an incredible film.

For the value of these films and the price points during the B&N sale, all of the Eclipse sets are worth a purchase.

If you have any doubts, you can read the reviews of all the Eclipse sets over at DVDBeaver. You can't go wrong with any of them... especially at those prices.

It wasn't a review, but rather a statement. My review is in the review/rate thread. The misstep, which many have echoed (and many haven't), is that the characters were purposely portrayed by the director as unsympathetic. The film centers around the tension (and does so very well) of these four individuals carrying nitroglycerine in a truck that could explode at any point. The misstep seems obvious: if you don't care about the characters, why would you care if they blow up? The tension is created through good direction, not through the characters. It was a pretty good film but with better characterization it could have been much better and more involving.

The problem is though, you keep saying the "director". That "director" is none other than Henri-Georges freakin' Clouzot, one of the best french directors of all time. This film isn't a character study but more of struggles, suspense, and tension. His films are mostly about betrayal and deception so his characters are prob not to be liked. Sometimes a film is just so you can have fun with it. Keeps you on the edge of your seat, no matter if you like the characters or not. You should prob watch more of his films in the collection to get his work. The Wages of Fear is still one of my fav films that has made it over to Criterion blu, with off the top of my head, Playtime, Bigger Than Life, and my lover Vivre sa vie.

I agree that I should see more of his films, but your comments don't relate to what I said. I never said it was a character study. As you point out, it's about suspense and tension. Common sense tells us that characters that you like evoke more sympathy, and thus you care whether they live or die. When you're indifferent about characters or simply don't like them, the suspense is lessened because who cares if they live or die? His direction is def top-notch in the film and I think it's good, I just think it would have been better suited if taken a different way.

Maybe you should try Sorcerer instead?

I found myself caring a great deal.. I don't think a character has to be by-the- numbers sympathetic to care about their fate. I mean, the joy of something like Psycho is that you inadvertently root for the killer. And I figure you'll say its a different character, etc, but its still the same principle.
