No it's not. To say it's more sophisticated is pretentious for the sake of ego.

Wow, really? I saw the movie in the theater and could have easily been bored to death but in the end I realized its one of his greatly misunderstood screen adaptations from Thomas Pynchon's novel. I personally think this movie needs at least one viewing and will be a "grower"... and in the end will end up as one of his greatest accomplishments ever. It's a movie that demands patience but is so esoteric that most people won't "get it" unless they really take the time to really "listen" and view.

Yea so this just answered it for me, from Ebert's Great Movie review:
" The River" and Michael Powell's "The Red Shoes" are "the two most beautiful color films ever made," Martin Scorsese says in an interview on the new Criterion DVD of the restored print. I saw the movie for the first time when Scorsese's personal 35mm copy played at the Virginia Film Festival some years ago; when I mentioned it to him, he said, "I watch that film three times a year. Sometimes four."

Well, how damning is "I found Inherent Vice to be one of PTA's worst films," when we are talking about someone who hasn't made a bad movie?

(I haven't seen Inherent Vice yet)

Isn't that exactly what your example was pointing out?

The first sentence you ever said to me was condescending, jay.

In addition to all of those ('Spider-Man' 1, 2, and 3, 'Daredevil', 'Hulk', 'Catwoman', 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen', 'Fantastic Four', 'Thor', 'Ghost Rider', 'Green Lantern', 'Jonah Hex'), you can add 'The Punisher', 'Blade: Trinity', the unnecessary 'Spider-Man' reboots, 'Elektra', 'Constantine', 'Superman Returns', '30 Days of Night', 'Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer', 'Punisher: War Zone', 'Wanted', 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine', 'The Losers', 'Thor: The Dark World (Hemsworth is a terrible actor; I've seen better acting on 'Xena: Warrior Princess'), 'The Green Hornet', 'Captain America' (I personally find the story incredibly cheesy; again, just my opinion, so no need to try to prove me wrong about it), 'Cowboys and Aliens', 'Conan the Barbarian', 'Priest', 'Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance', 'G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra', 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation', 'Hancock', 'R.I.P.D', 'Sin City: A Dame to Kill For', 'The Spirit', '300: Rise of an Empire', 'Hercules', 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles'.

I am officially done posting about superhero movies. I can't believe some people have such a vested interest in my film tastes.

I didn't expect a two-sentence-long comment I posted that was just a personal observation/opinion to turn into a fanboy free-for-all.

Great news! Can hardly wait! I saw an archival screening of THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD in 35mm last summer, and while parts looked excellent as expected, a large percentage of other parts looked like so-so dupes and poor 16mm blowups to fill in missing sections, certainly not something collectors would appreciate on Blu-ray. I hope the entire film survives with good original 35mm material. Tracking down and/or restoring the best elements may be why a Blu-ray release has been taking so long.

Keeping this closer to topic, I would hope Warner includes some Criterion-quality supplements on at least THE THING if not all three titles.

Maybe, but not likely. If it's released as a Warner Home Video title, and given all the bells and whistles that they give their premiere titles, sure. If it's a Warner Archive Collection release, the best we'll get is the same extras that were on Warner's DVD edition. In the case of The Thing from Another World, the only extra on Warner's DVD was the trailer.

I think you missed: 'X-Men: The Last Stand','The Incredible Hulk','Iron Man 2 and 3','Man of Steel','Kick-Ass 2','The Wolverine','The Amazing Spider Man 1 and 2'.

That is just based on general critics ratings, anyway i don't think we will ever see the day when Criterion releases a superhero movie so with all the opinions already expressed i don't see the point of continuing this.

Although it seems the debate about whether to say boring vs hold attention is getting close to changing the subject.

How is "so don't see them" condescending? It was a simple suggestion. If I had wanted to be condescending, I would've phrased it "Well, you don't have to see them if you don't like them, you know. It's not rocket science."

I've been on the internet for something like 30 years. In all that time, I've posted things that were without a doubt snarky, confrontational, and condescending (sometimes unintentional, sometimes deliberate). Trust me, what I've said to you is none of those things. My above remark 'What did you think the "if" in the above quote meant?' is an example of me being snarky.

Judex is a VERY short step away from Batman.

Done and Done!

I finally got my copy of Tarkovsky's 'The Sacrifice' yesterday. I know someone said impatience and Tarkovsky aren't very compatible, but I can't wait to watch it tomorrow!

If the vast majority of people buy Criterions during sales, shouldn't that imply that the MSRP of $39.99 is simply too high? Basic economics. Supply and demand. The demand is such that most people won't pay $39.99. Perhaps if the MSRP were around $30, there wouldn't need to be as many sales. The SRP should be what people are willing to pay not what Criterion wants them to pay. The market is what created things such as Criterion store flash sales and B&N sales.

I've seen it twice now and can comfortably say I think it's his worst. I don't think it did the novel justice, unfortunately.

Erm, what about Mr. Freedom?

I don't think Ang Lee's Hulk is completely outside of the realms of possibility either. If only Alain Resnais had gone ahead with his adaptation of Spider-Man!

Ha ha. You may be projecting, as in the old saying that goes something like, "When you talk about someone else, you're saying more about yourself than the other person."

And while not a superhero movie, Blue Is The Warmest Color sits just a couple of notches away from Batman on bookcases around the world.
