Criterion just posted a photograph of Kubrick on the set of Spartacus. I can't wait for the even louder cries of "Where's Spartacus?!?!" on the 15th of every month from now until the end of time!

I'm not sure this is the case*, more that the enthusiasm for such things are louder in a vacuum like this forum. I buy all year 'round, usually 2 or 3 new releases a month, and pay around $35 per disc. I don't have a problem doing this, as I can afford to do so and Criterion are a company whose work I am keen to support as best I can. There are plenty of people who regularly contribute to this thread that buy new titles on release too.

* and if it were the case, do you not think Criterion would already have addressed it in some way?

There's the MSRP ($39.99) then there's the cost at which Criterion sells to a retailer. Before BN even sells one blu-ray during a sale Criterion has already made their dough from BN.

...and I doubt that anyone here on this blog has actually purchased a Criterion Collection blu-ray at the MSRP price. That would seem to me to be a very foolish thing to do.

I've just bought Kicking And Screaming, so there's a good chance it'll be announced for Blu-ray in two weeks time!

Yeah, even at Criterion's online store they are discounted.

Now, I suppose that someone who pays more than SRP of 39.95 for an out-of-print copy could end up becoming the greatest fool.

Not on blu, but I did buy my DVD of Black Narcissus at Tower Records for the full list price of $39.99 years ago, shortly after it came out (one of my first DVDs). This was before I was much aware of these new-fangled internet sales and such

It bugs me when people judge or tell others who they should spend their hard earned money.

Why is someone a fool for working hard and treating themselves to a collectors item, whatever the price may be. It is THEIR money to spend on what they want, why judge?

It wasn't meant to bug you, but aimed at those who buy oop in the hope of reselling at a higher price. At some point, one of them is going to become the "greatest fool." I think the term comes from the "greater fool" theory which operates in the stock market, housing market, etc., where people speculate that the price will go higher because someone will come along and pay more than they did.

Are there any blu rays that I routinely sell for their MSRP? Everyone makes fun of regular B&N prices (on all of their movies) because they are priced at MSRP and no other stores seem to charge those prices. Even B&N.com doesn't do that. Seems odd to single out Criterion for a practice that seems standard across the board (a MSRP that is higher than what most people are likely to ever pay) .

Pre-Ordered "The Thin Blue Line", "Hoop Dreams" and "Cries & Whispers" from Amazon with the lower prices...

Screw waiting 3-4 more months for only $3 per title.

I still don't get why it should bother you if someone else wants to buy OOPs to resell? People do all the time at auctions, buying items low and selling high.

The buyer/seller is aware of the risk and they should expect some fail and loss of money, thats the risk of buying low and trying to sell high.

It doesn't make them a fool, its a very smart and great way to make money :P

Today's discount of Sullivan's Travels means I've pre-ordered it...

Where I would love to buy it for under $20, $23 will have to be close enough!
