As long as we're making our fantasy wish-lists, let me add Taylor Hackford's Chuck Berry portrait, Hail! Hail! Rock 'N Roll. Great movie, great music, great stories.

I saw Whiplash in my local arthouse theater last night and I was blown away by this film. Totally worth seeing if its still out in theaters in your city. Some of the best acting and one of the best endings in any film I've ever witnessed.

Yes, it is! Very good! If I'm remembering it correctly, the proper quotation is: "But howsoever thou pursuest this act, taint not thy mind nor let thy soul contrive against thy mother ought; leave her to heaven, and to those thorns that in her bosom lodge, to prick and sting her."

It's from "Hamlet", and is advice given to the title character from the Shade of his Father.

I've only seen the original short - but it left me wanting more!

I watched the original short after watching the movie, and it doesn't even compare, most of the crew is the same, but the changes they did for the movie make it far better, mostly the main Actor and Cinematographer.

Speaking of Shakespeare references, I noticed one in 'The Sacrifice' last night that I wouldn't have caught a couple of weeks ago, before I started my crash course in Shakespeare films. Alexander recites the line "Which of you have done this... The Lords?" from 'Macbeth' as he's pondering the model of the house Little Man and Otto built for him.

I'm proud of myself for catching that one

does anyone have the CC DVD for Written on the Wind? I almost bit on a very affordable 'like new' copy on eBay, but figured that Sirk really needs to be seen on blu-ray and that Imitation of Life will hold me over while waiting for CC to release more films by him.

anyway, is the PQ any good on the CC DVD?

Yes, and yes. It's Magnificent Obsession, though, that I really want to see upgraded.

Stop Making Sense seems like as likely a future music release as any for Criterion. Great film too.

I enjoyed it too. As I remarked at the time, that it had me rooting for a guy who talks thru Rififi by pictures end is a testament to how involving and affecting that last act is.

The short is literally a scene that's in the film. I think he shot it solely to show around for funding purposes (there was some controversy over the film's status as an "adapted" screenplay when it came to the oscars).

yeah I recognise a lot of it from the trailers and was a bit weird seeing the different actor in short haha.

Can't wait to see full film though !

I agree. It's a fun movie to watch. Foxcatcher is next on my list.

I have it, and the PQ is very, very good indeed. I remember the colors being absolutely gorgeous; I think the adjective that popped into my head at the time was "hallucinatory". I bought my copy at a used bookstore, and only picked it up because it was so cheap. After watching it, I became a huge fan of the movie, and my love for Sirk deepened considerably. (I was mostly familiar with him because of two black and white ... and vastly underrated ... Barbara Stanwyck films, All I Desire and There's Always Tomorrow.)

I really hope that The Theory of Everything makes its way into the Criterion Collection in the future. I think from both an artistic and a message standpoint it would fit well into their line up, especially since they already have A Brief History of Time.

The vanilla BD release of this movie was really disappointing to see. It's a film that absolutely deserves better.

I heard it is being restored, but being such a long project, will take some time. Not sure who is doing the restoration.

I'll try to see Whiplash. I am curious about whether Rififi is being used as furniture video, like some have furniture music, or whether the guy talking about Rififi. The near-death drive through Paris at the end of Rififi is its best part.

Last night, I finally got around to watching my blind-buy purchase of Breaking the Waves. All I can say is that I was blown away!

[Show spoiler]I can see why Criterion chose to use Von Trier's chapter images in the disc's loop- absolutely stunning cinematography. The acting was outstanding particularly Emily Watson.

Very highly recommended!

One of my favourite transfers in collection, in terms of upgrade from the old DVDs, its an entirely new film and is stunning.
