I made some more room in the monthly budget, returned to the Criterion store, and placed a second order, this time for Branded to Kill, Tokyo Drifter, and Summer with Monika.

This brings my total Flash Sale haul to...

Harakiri
Heaven's Gate
The Sword of Doom
An Autumn Afternoon
Branded to Kill
Tokyo Drifter
Summer with Monika

I previously owned Heaven's Gate, The Sword of Doom, Branded to Kill, and Tokyo Drifter on DVD, so they're not blind buys and they're all fun "second tier" Criterion titles that I had simply postponed upgrading for a long while. I'm really looking forward to seeing the offbeat colors of Tokyo Drifter in high definition.

An Autumn Afternoon will be my third Ozu film, after Late Spring and Tokyo Story.

I've always heard that Harakiri is an intense flick, and it looks right up my alley as far as samurai cinema goes.

Summer with Monika seems like just the sort of sensual flick that I'll enjoy over the spring and summer.

Also...

(drumroll, please)

I received my $50 Criterion gift certificate just now! Woo hoo!

I'm going to hold my horses, though, and use the certificate in a couple of weeks to buy Ride the Pink Horse and, hopefully, The Soft Skin.

I picked up Watership Down, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and finally went in for The Red Shoes. Love when these flash sales happen.

Actually... There's no time like the present.

I just used my gift certificate to pre-order Ride the Pink Horse and to order The Soft Skin, which is currently on backorder.

After the gift certificate, the purchase of these two titles came out to $13.62.

It'll take a few weeks to get them, since The Soft Skin has to be back in stock, but God knows that I've got plenty to watch in the meantime.

This is a massive upgrade that shows the wide range of limitations DVD had. The improvements in terms of detail and clarity are not surprising -- all of the 2K restorations of Bergman's films have been extraordinary -- but the improvements in color depth and saturation are tremendous. And they have a massive impact on image depth as well. I did various comparisons during the last coupe of days (my DVD and the Blu-ray) and the difference is astonishing. You can tell exactly what Sven Nykvist was trying to accomplish with the fade-to-red transitions, the flashbacks, etc. On the DVD release the effect is lost -- very clearly.

I hope Criterion continue to bring the Bergman restorations to the U.S. as they have been nothing short of revelatory.

Anyhow, this release has a reserved spot on my Top 10 list. Fantastic!

Pro-B
Thank you. This is very good to hear. I've curbed my Criterion spending, but every Bergman coming out is a must. No questions asked.

I want it now!

Criterion excepted it looks like the actual release date is March 17 now. I've had it pre-ordered for weeks and it moved back around 10 days ago.

I can't wait to see Ride The Pink Horse. It's not often that Criterion release a film that I've never heard of at all, and I'm keen to see what it is about this that has pushed them in to picking it up.

I picked up:

Ace in the Hole
Down By Law
Medium Cool (I've never seen this and I hate blind buys, hopefully the reviewer didn't lead me astray)

It's honestly not too bad. I was able to find a solid copy of it online so I could preview the film before I committed to a purchase.

There's a certain level of mystery that surrounds the entire film, but it should be noted that it doesn't play out like your typical film-noir mystery.

Medium Cool is an excellent film. It blends fiction with non-fiction in the style of cinéma vérité.

I wasn't suggesting that I thought it would be (I pre-ordered it a while ago). I trust Criterion's judgement!

Criterion has some relationship with IFC? I saw the IFC DVD "Venus in Furs," yesterday, and am surprised that Criterion would pass on it. It's a very clever movie. Who is Vanda? Haha.

I'll stop at the library and get the novel.

It is used in expressions like, "Unallowed unallowed, and your mama, too."

Thanks...I was not familiar with that expression. I got it...I said it is a fun film but it is such a sad film too...I expect this to grow further on me...

I thought Watership Down would sell out early during the flash sale. No way to know exactly how it sold since I have no information on what the initial stock levels were like, but if it did sell slowly I hope it doesn't effect Criterion's decisions on future animation releases.

Yesterday, I decided to just hit the flash sale hard enough to tide me over until the B&N July sale. I ordered:

To Be or Not to Be
I Married a Witch
Ministry of Fear
3 Women

I was congratulating myself for my fiscal restraint when I felt an irresistable Technicolor urge, so this morning I ordered:

The Four Feathers
The Red Shoes
Jubal

I justified this weakening of my resolve by canceling a couple of my Amazon pre-orders, but I'm a little further off my from my New Year's resolution of watching more blu rays than I buy this year. That unwatched pile just got bigger. Sigh 😊

Right there with you... my unwatched pile seems neverending!

I dunno, it was listed as a "Top Seller" on the sale page for pretty much all of yesterday. I think they just anticipated it'd be popular and made sure to have plenty in stock, especially since it's so new

I think that this is a good theory. WD is already in almost 400 collections for site members. Don't Look Now is in approximately the same number of collections.

It is interesting to see the titles that are in the most collections here. There were a few surprises for me. 1) that Persona was in so few and 2) that Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence in as many as it is. release dates need to be taken into consideration, but still...
