They should totally do a biopic of her, starring Geoffrey Rush

Still no "shipped" email, but my order placed within the first half hour at least made it to pre-ship status yesterday, even has a tracking number.

Whatever, in the end it's what I end up keeping after it arrives that matters.

(Edit: Still no shipped email, but looks like it will show up tomorrow (Monday).)

**double take**

Say what. That is such a beautifully quirky theory that I am not even going to google to see if it's original because I want to take a moment to savor the awesomeness.

I am going to have re-watch both of these. Soon.

Of all of the reinterpretations of the John Ford's 1939 film, Stagecoach, this particular film is one of the most lively, and the concept of disparate characters being brought together by circumstance that was blueprinted in the Ford film comes across particularly well in this youth-oriented take. I've always figured that about a third of the movies that have been released after Stagecoach have followed its blueprint in rough form, and that's why it was such a great addition to the Criterion Collection.

In other Criterion news...

My Blu-rays of Harakiri, Heaven's Gate, An Autumn Afternoon, and The Sword of Doom all arrived in the mail today. Woo hoo!

How did I miss this fascinating post ...? Did I skip a page when I was reading through all the new posts on this thread earlier in the day? Anyway, thank you, atlantajoseph, for bringing it to my attention!

I, too, am going to have to revisit The Breakfast Club ... it was one of my favorites back when it was on (seemingly constant) rotation on the pay-channel stations, and it's inexcusable of me not to have picked up the blu-ray before this.

Thanks for another intriguing comment, Great Owl!

It is marked as a digipak here on the site, every once in a while they release digipaks even if it is just one disc, probably because of the booklet.

SANSHO has an 80 page book, it wouldn't fit in a plastic case.

There are a number of Criterion releases that are in digipaks and are not BD/DVD combos.

The excellent Second Run DVD was based on an HD master, which might possibly serve as a source for an actual HD release. I love this movie.

Inspired film from Scorsese who felt deeply on the subject, and a great performance from Willem Dafoe. Well worth watching.

I think it might be Martin Scorcese's finest film actually.
Thanks for the info. I am kind of curious about Scorsese's relationship with his religion. His choices of subject matter for his films seem to me to be a complete contradiction of what I would expect from someone who almost became a Catholic priest lol.

Was reading about a release of this in another thread (about Glass Doll Films) just today.Which lead me to this https://www.facebook.com/glassdollfi...17233101878540
it appears they intend to release it sometime this year.

A Blu-Ray release of Valerie would be amazing. It's up there with Marketa Lazarova and The Cremator as one of my favourite Czech films. And it's a visual treat.

I've long thought it an odd omission, given that it's one of the better known Czech films too.

Indeed, it seems that Criterion are riding on the coattails of Second Run. Hopefully they get on to restoring Miklos Jancso's works as well, a filmmaker I've been inspired to revisit after seeing the dedication in White God.

I assume you know already about this release here?
(it doesn't have the film you say, but it has similar films)
