Wow, two of my Blu-rays arrived today damaged. For the first time, Criterion didn't ship them in a cardboard box (although only one of them could have been damaged during shipping). I sent them an e-mail asking for their replacement policy at orders@criterion.com. They won't answer it until Monday at the earliest, though.

This sucks.

Gotcha, and thank you. I was mostly searching for Trains, hence not finding it. Now, where to buy...

Has anyone purchased a poster from them? Im super interested in the Grey Gardens and the Vivra Sa Vie posters but Im in a dorm now so I wont be able to frame them for a bit and want to make sure they will hold up well in storage.

My L'Avventura poster arrived rolled and wrapped in of brown paper, placed into a tube, and placed into a shipping box.

I have not hung mine yet, but it is currently in storage and seems to be fine.

High praise from you Scottie, I'm definitely going to revisit it after I watch some more Fellini.

To be fair, it took me more than one watch to really appreciate the film. I'm sure you'll like it more on a second watch.

I just really, really, really love Marcello's journey over the course of the film. Each scenario is more daring and revealing than the next. Is life sweet or is there simply an illusion that it is?

His journey is undoubtedly the finest aspect of the film; his character evolves and grows as much as any character that I have seen in cinema.

My friend was asking about Night and Fog today, do we anticipate it would be transformed into a bonus feature to another Resnais release (possibly Hiroshima)? I can't see them releasing a 31 minute film as a standalone on blu.

Well it has already a standalone dvd release with a $15 SRP, so with current pricing my guess is it could end up as an upgrade for around $25 SRP, unless they add a lot of extras and they may go for $30 or even $40 like with A Day in the Country

Edit: Just checked and Simon of the Desert (45 mins film) is at $25 SRP, not sure why Night and Fog is so cheap since it doesn't appear to be a bare-bones release.

Edit 2: It may be that at 41 and 45 minutes Simon of the Desert and A Day in the Country are considered Feature films, while less than 40 minutes is considered a short.

The DVDs of Night & Fog and Hiroshima Mon Amour were released separately at the same time. The reasoning was that Night & Fog was too important to be shoehorned as a bonus feature. I feel like that would stick for Blu-ray.

Okay, upon reflection I realize I've been taking the wrong approach by telling Criterion which films I want them to release or upgrade. They never co-operate. So I'm going to use a little reverse psychology this month, and see if I don't get better results. Here goes:

Hey, Criterion! Listen up and follow orders if you know what's good for you. Under no circumstances are you to even think about announcing the following titles on March 16. You got it? Trust me, you do not want to get me all riled up, no how, no way. Otherwise, you may find yourself floating in that river you featured so prominently in the 2015 "Wacky New Year" drawing. Capisce? Okay, here's the blacklist:

Mulholland Drive ... ixnay
Night and the City and Thieves Highway ... fuhgeddaboudit
The New World ... not on your life
Two Days, One Night ... negatory
The Fisher King ... not unless you're cruisin' for a bruisin'
Heaven Can Wait ... like Hell, I say

Okay, that oughtta do it. Now that I've laid down the law, you can rest assured that none of these titles will make an appearance on Monday. I have spoken.

Last night, ironically, I watched Scorcese's remake of Cape Fear for the first time in decades. Wow, I just about nearly forgot how crazy DeNiro was in that movie. At times I couldn't help but laugh out loud at the lunacy of the characters. And I also couldn't help but notice all these religious subtexts and allegories to Catholicism and Christianity. I believe every single film Scorcese makes has some sort of allusion and reference to something religious. I dare anyone to name a single film of his that doesn't.
Very interesting article. I wasn't saying that there was no allusion or reference to religion in his films, but that the subject matter he chose for a lot his films is either inherently graphic and vulgar, or he chose to make it that way. I should have explained that a bit more thoroughly, but I hate typing on a tablet lol.

The article did help me understand the depth of his religious convictions and how they influence his choice in material a lot better, though. A lot of the parables in the bible aren't exactly PG-rated.

Oh, and oddly enough, I just bought the original 'Cape Fear' with Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck a couple of nights ago

They miss out big time - they should have released it alongside Plague Dogs (although I no idea what the situation is on the rights).

But would have been PERFECT.

Just my 2 cents. Still a great film.
[Show spoiler]But he does; the film ends in the very last moment of his freedom, as he still believes he's "gotten away with it". He leaves the frame, but we don't follow. The fact he's about to be caught means nothing as he's still gotten away with it, as we're left behind in this final moment of freedom.

I couldn't agree more. I e-mailed Martin Rosen about the possibility of a Plague Dogs release like Criterion's Watership Down, and he said that he thinks "it's unlikely as the film didn't perform as well as Watership Down." It's down to Criterion (or another company, like Shout!) to prove him wrong.
