King Hu all the way baby. Its kind of conjecture, but pretty safe I would think. CC's Becker was on the 2014 Cannes Un Certain Regard jury where the restored version of Dragon Inn was shown in the Classics line-up (a restored Touch of Zen will be shown at Cannes 2015) and MoC in the UK have already announced they are putting it out (4K restoration) in 2015.

There should be a English subtitled region A set containing Rebels of the Neon God, The River and Vive l'Amour released soon in Taiwan. But importing them tends to be expensive (I still haven't got round to getting the Hou Hsiao-Hsien set with Dust in the Wind and A Time to Live, A Time to Die)
What region are Big World's releases in?

I see that Rebels of the Neon God (which reminds me a little of Wong Kar Wai's debut, As Tears Go By, at least based on the trailer alone) is getting a Japanese Blu-ray release on April 3rd but I doubt it will have English subtitles. Where did you find out that there's going to be a Taiwanese Blu-ray?

I noticed that Taiwanese filmmakers tend to get their movies released in a boxset, like with Ang Lee's "Father Knows Best" trilogy.

Ah. That makes sense.

On a related note, I see that The Tales of Hoffman received a 4K restoration in the UK and is getting a Blu-ray release from Studio Canal in 1 week so hopefully Criterion follows suit.

Big World are the company who have picked it up for the US, first for a limited theatrical release.

I keep an eye on the Facebook page of the Central Motion Pictures Corporation, where they often post about restorations they're working on. They announced the Tsai set a few months ago but I don't think it has actually come out yet.

Unfortunately, Criterion no longer have a deal with Studio Canal so their Hoffmann DVD is out of print.

It's possible CC could release Hoffman. They did release the Tati set. Although, the Tati Estate specifically requested Canal hand the films over to the Criterion for release.

I don't think StudioCanal has the US distribution of Tales of Hoffman (or Peeping Tom, for that matter) - Rialto does.

Both went OOP when Canal did not renew the distribution deal with CC, right?

Dear Criterion collectors,

Our three least favorite initials: OOP. Since we launched the Criterion Collection more than twenty-five years ago, we’ve endeavored to keep everything we’ve published in print. But despite our efforts to renew rights, we are losing a large group of titles from StudioCanal at the end of March, and we wanted to give you advance notice that our editions will be going out of print. Until we’re out of stock, we will be offering these titles at an additional $5 off on our website. The titles are going to Lionsgate, and we don’t know when they may be rereleased. As ever, we will continue to try to relicense the films so that they can rejoin the collection sometime in the future.

Here are the titles that will soon be out of print:

Alphaville
Carlos Saura’s Flamenco Trilogy (Eclipse Series 6)
Le corbeau
Coup de torchon
Diary of a Country Priest
The Fallen Idol
Forbidden Games (Criterion and Essential Art House editions)
Gervaise (Essential Art House edition)
Grand Illusion (Criterion and Essential Art House editions)
Le jour se lève (Essential Art House edition)
Last Holiday (Essential Art House edition)
Mayerling (Essential Art House edition)
The Orphic Trilogy
Peeping Tom
Pierrot le fou (DVD and Blu-ray editions)
Port of Shadows
Quai des Orfèvres
The Small Back Room
The Tales of Hoffmann (Criterion and Essential Art House editions)
Trafic
Le trou
Variety Lights (Essential Art House edition)
The White Sheik

Take note: this may be your last chance to pick up spine number 1 from the collection.

Happy viewing!
The Criterion Collection

Rialto just has theatrical distribution rights, like they do for several films they didn't distribute on home media

Rialto has a theatrical distribution arrangement for selected Studio Canal titles that has no connection with Criterion's former home video distribution.

I almost put an order through last week for the current blu of Vive l'Amour via jsdvd, but I guess I'll just wait for the box set.

All this Tsai Ming-liang talk means I'll be cracking open my Stray Dogs blu tonight.

My wish for release day today is an Eclipse set with 4-5 Naruse films.

Tsai Ming-liang announced he was retiring from feature films after making Stray Dogs, which is the only movie of his that's available via Netflix streaming. Is starting with his final film a good idea (even though I've read up on his style and length of camera shots, some people have warned against this) or should I just wait for Rebels of the Neon God to be released?

Stray Dogs was my first of his. Remarkable movie. I do think it will lose a lot in the transition from cinema to home, but there's not much you can do about that.

I'm not really qualified to answer that question as Stray Dogs will be my first. I wouldn't read too much into the retirement stuff. He's already made/worked on another film since Stray Dogs. I think it's more of a "I'm really tired right now and don't have any plans to make another film right now" kind of retirement (think Miyazaki after Mononoke).
