Why doesn't Criterion ever do 2-disc BDs like they did with Seven Samurai? 1st disc for the film to make it sound and look as good as possible while the 2nd can be stuffed to the brim with as much extras as they like.

I don't know if I'm a fan of the precident the Five Easy Pieces standalone release sets with regard to blu-ray releases (though nor am I particularly put off by it), but I'm such a fan of that particular film that I can't complain that it's more easily available.

This was my first thought when I saw the single Blu-ray release of Five Easy Pieces in today's announcement....

I know that there's some method to the madness, but my advice for all concerned is to fork out for the America Lost and Found: The BBS Story box set during the next big sale, because you get that movie in its relative place with other films during an important era of cinema on these shores.

I'll second that--it's an education!

I am not sure why anyone would not the box sets broken up all the films in these sets are not Criterion worthy IMHO. Now if they would just break up the other sets as I really want Brief Encounter and some other individual titles.

A mono soudtrack only for My Dinner With Andre? No DTS-HD 5.1 surround sound? Phhh. I'll pass then.

I agree, America Lost and Found is an amazing box set, my favorite Criterion release. It is educational and entertaining. The films are varied. There are great extras. And all of the films have fantastic restorations. I suspect that it may be going OOP with the Five Easy Pieces standalone release, although I could be wrong. If that's the case, then the set's stature will inevitably reach mythic levels, and I would recommend buying it as soon as possible.

I was also hoping this would be the Collection's first 3D title. Oh well.

Criterion needs to start remixing their films in Dolby Atmos.

The Collection's first 3D title came out two years ago.

You realize Seven Samurai film alone is well over 3 hours, right? That one was probably as much to do with the length of the film as anything. Although they do have a few shorter films that sported 2 discs to accomidate extras(Night of the Hunter, Brazil, Battle of Algiers, Red River, On the Waterfront, etc).

I'm sure even with Criterion it comes down to expense. They do the 2nd disc only in special cases (I.e. if they are presenting alternate cuts of a film or some substantial documentary)

I'm for the separation of the box set because all I really want is Last Picture Show (I hope it's next) and the connection between all those films seems tenuous to me, ie. I'm not convinced that because I like LPS, I'll like Head. (And I already know I don't like Easy Rider.) It seems like any impact BBS might have had on film history and any educational or academic interest in it is based on one or two of these films, not all of them as a whole.

Brief Encounter, Journey to Italy, Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Easy Rider, Last Picture Show would all generate additional sales as standalones. There may be others, like two from the Tati set ... .

Brief Encounter is another potential standalone candidate (and bloody fantastic); but that set can be had for fifty bucks, so it may not make the jump. Who knows?

The BBS set is also almost five years old, as well, so..fine by me. Though I also understand someone who bought the BBS set and didn't like it being furious at this. Fair is fair.

I don't have the set. It's one that's on my list for the B&N sales, but somehow there's always something else to get instead. Quite frankly, the only ones I'm familiar with in the set are The Last Picture Show and Five Easy Pieces (have the Criterion LDs of both of them) and Head (because, you know, The Monkees).

Looking at the output of a studio (since the death of the studio system in the US in the 50s) tends to be more of an intellectual exercise than anything else. The connection among films can be virtually non-existent, or it could be more of a collaborative inspiration (as in some artists studios), or there can be connections that extend deeper than it seems at first.

I suspect that any further individual releases from Criterion out of this set will probably stop at The Last Picture Show, because it and Five Easy Pieces are the two high-profile films from the set. Yes, there's Easy Rider, but given that Sony has themselves released two editions of it on Blu-ray, I'm not completely convinced that Criterion will release a separate edition.

I almost bought the David Lean directs Noel Coward set, primarily for Brief Encounter. Didn't.

Got my Complete Jacques Tati set today. Oddly, the digipacks are squeezed and uneven in the slip case. Figured it out ... the case isn't bit enough for all of them and the booklet. Take out the booklet, or the Shorts disc, and the remainder fits okay.

Odd. Well, that's Tati for you.

Criterion should release a surrealism set with such works as Maya Deren shorts and Un Chien Andalou.
