I hope it's not a glitch but it probably is.I ordered one just in case. Unless a box of these were recently discovered in their warehouse, we'll probably be disappointed.

"The Third Man is rightfully considered to be Carol Reed's masterpiece, but there are certain aspects of Odd Man Out that are better. William Alwyn's score, for instance, may well be one of the very best ever done for a noir film."
- Pro B

Completely a matter of subjectivity.. and I should say that I haven't seen OMO yet, but the zither score in The Third Man, IMO, elevates a great movie to an all-time classic. I know some have expressed their displeasure with it, but to me it is absolutely perfect. So unique, so memorable. There aren't too many scores I can recall and hum in my head but this one (Vertigo, The Conversation are two others,) stays with me.

I think it's apt to feature work by a street artist on the cover for this particular film, and I think the piece chosen represents the film well. The use of this kind of art also harks back to the films original marketing too.
This is great information. I certainly did not know this. Haring (if we want to play several degrees of separation) was also a contemporary of Jean-Michel Basquiat, who was another famous NYC graffiti artist from the 1980's. See the movie, Basquiat, if you haven't. Jeffrey Wright (better known from his role in the recent Bond films) plays Basquiat and David Bowie plays Andy Warhol.

Who would pre-order a June release from amazon and not wait just less than a month for the B&N sale?

i have seen the film once or twice, but i thought the zither score was totally unfitting and irrelevant to the film. (this of course has nothing to do with the score being good or bad or memorable on its own)
But I'm not sure yet, because I don't know the film well..

I scratch my head on why anyone pre orders Criterion at 40 bucks a pop. I mean if you wait you will catch it for 19.99-22.00 bucks not too long afterward, or members are always selling Criterions 15-20 shipped in the trade section.

Army of Shadows and Leon Morin Priest also available as Out of Stock MSRP on Amazon; the fact these appeared the same night as the June releases does make me think something is up.

Wow. That, coupled with The Man Who Fell to Earth rumor isn't hard enough evidence for me to be anything other than (extremely) cautiously optimistic...but...there's a distant whiff of good news, here.

Amazon has a pre-order price guarantee where you are guaranteed the lowest price between the time you order and the release date. I frequently pre-order movies as soon as they go up on Amazon and wait for the price to drop. I then check back a few days before release date and, if the price hasn't dropped enough for my satisfaction, I cancel the order and wait for a sale. For titles I really want I'm willing to pay a few dollars more than flash sale prices. For instance, I currently have Sullivan's Travels locked in for $22.99.

Believe me, I'm not rich.

The zither score has such a wistful, melancholic vibe. Consider this line from Holly (Joseph Cotton):
[Show spoiler]“I'm just a hack writer who drinks too much and falls in love with girls.” Recall Holly getting drunk early in the film after he learns of Harry’s supposed death. Holly’s longing for a woman who’d rather be with a racketeer is at the heart of the film. Anna longs for her idea of Harry (“Harry never did anything. Only a small thing once, out of kindness.”) This runs parallel to the first line of the film and a predominant theme of the entire movie (“I never knew the old Vienna – before the war.”) The war had changed everything and everyone. Some (Anna) did not want to accept that. The score is a soundtrack to drinking away sorrows and trying to forget.

Great point. Its "inappropriateness" also reflects
[Show spoiler]Holly's unwillingness to believe that Harry hasn't done what he's been accused of doing, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. It's Harry's charm--a lie. The jaunty score is akin to someone covering their ears and humming loudly to ignore information they don't want to hear or accept.

Also, I don't think I'd ever heard a solo zither before seeing the movie, so it kind of worked as an alienating, abstracting element on my first viewing of the film. It made/makes it a really unique experience.

Wonderful music. It grabbed me from the opening scenes and remained strong until the end. The sexual content weirded me out a little though at times; from what I understand, the actress was 14 when they filmed it.

Definitely going to buy the Blu Ray though. On the whole I enjoyed it quite a bit. The film is dreamy in just the right ways; reminded me a bit of Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast at times.
The films that it reminds be most of are Tideland, The Reflecting Skin, Svankmajer's Alice, Morgiana, Black Moon and The Hourglass Sanatorium. I rewatched it last night with my girlfriend and I remember telling her it was really sexually explicit but I found it much tamer than I remembered.

I've probably gonna do the same for The Fisher King and Valerie and her Week of Wonders if it goes that low.
