Is L'AVVENTURA mysterious? I know Roger Ebert referred to it in his review for Picnic. Not seen any of the films in that trilogy though...

Reminds me I still need to watch my copy of Walkabout...

I find all of Antonioni's films to be mysterious, although not in the traditional sense.

Im going to be honest Im not sure Im getting all the subtext that Roeg is putting down but its just so weird to me. I keep having to rewatch parts because I keep thinking I know im missing something because that scene makes no sense in that particular spot. I hate having to re-watch mid-movie because I feel like it distorts the intended flow.

... Hope others share this sentiment bc Ive definitely seen many a more challenging movie and got through it fine. Ok just had to say that and now back to watching.
I grew up seeing it as a youth in the 1970s, and can corroborate your feelings. I likened the film to a different flavor of 2001: a space odyssey, a film that was to be "experienced" first and "understood" second. I would just let free association and understanding occur to me over a few viewings. Some people make films that you are enticed to think, puzzle, and ponder over. Others make films that are deliciously bewildering. Roeg usually hits the latter mark.

(I'm sure the Critierion edition's commentary and extras will help. I know I gained more sensitivity about The Last Temptation Of Christ that way last weekend.

Because it was in a paper digipack? that's what I've got, and I don't mind it. Perhaps someone can enlighten me, what's "wrong" with digipack cases in slip cases? (I don't like digipacks without a slip case, pfft.)

I think we can all think of films that affected us like a punch in the gut or some other visceral reaction. I don't want to miss that, which is why when I'm really into a film I don't want to hit the pause button (my bladder can wait).

Anyway, TMWFTE was one of those films that I had a strong emotional reaction to, and no, I didn't understand everything. Still don't, but wow, I still remember how I felt.
You said it better than I. Kudos.

Some ideas:

Branded To Kill ? (okay, more a matter of style than the entire film)
Sans Soleil
Carnival of Souls (so I've heard, I haven't finished viewing it)
Playtime (maybe not the same bafflement you're thinking of, but if can be mystifying)
Sweet Movie
Naked Lunch / Videodrome

Criminy, I have to pay $120 or $250 for the OOP BD of Chungking Express... :_( Can't believe I missed that. O_o

well, the most mysterious film I've ever seen is Lost Highway, but that isn't a Criterion title.
Maybe Eraserhead fits the bill?
I haven't seen it.

Eraserhead could be considered mysterious because the film seems like it just throws things at you for no rhyme or reason. The mystery is that you have to figure out what the hell Lynch meant with all that imagery.

Where did I say I wanted to pay the same for less? My post says that I wish there was two versions. With the book, without the book. Implying, the book version would be more expensive. While the book-less version would be cheaper. Can't they do what Criterion did for The Last Emperor and charge more for more and less for less?

As someone already mentioned, your solution means a loose digipack on the shelf. You need the outer case.

Aren't you perhaps comparing apples and oranges? Criterion's standard MSRP for a feature-length blu-ray is $39.95, which is exactly the price point for Picnic at Hanging Rock ... the book was, in this case, essentially a "gift with purchase" (and we received the film in dual format, to boot). That wasn't the case with The Last Emperor in which the extra material caused the MSRP to double from $29.95 to $59.95.

The solution I might offer you, and I mean this to be helpful and not at all snarky, would involve purchasing a clear plastic blu-ray case from Criterion to house your Hanging Rock blu-ray, and then either make up a customized art insert, or ask someone to make one for you (there are many gifted artists who haunt this thread; I'm not one of them or I would volunteer), then sell, trade or give away the book, digipak, outer box and DVD copies.

Just an idea ...

I understand completely, yet at the same time Criterion understood that on The Last Emperor some people just want the film. Plain and simple. The hardcore fans who want all the cuts and extras can buy the $59.95 version. I see Picnic at Hanging Rock the same way. $39.95 for the Blu Ray only. $49.95 for the book + blu ray.

But I guess I'm in the minority complaining about receiving a book I don't need, while everyone else complains about DVDs they don't need.

Oh, and thank you for the other solution. I appreciate it.

I completely agree with you, but wouldn't have even needed the reduced price. The extra space it would give me on the shelf is worth it to me.

[edited] Oh, the single DVD is just the movie, the 4-DVD set is what's on the BD set...?

http://www.criterion.com/films/254-the-last-emperor

I agree, I have a few discs that I have in custom cases. I put the SEABISCUIT's BDs in my DVD collector's slip case booklet, cards, bookmark. partridge in a pear tree. Et cetera.... For me, it's a matter of value-for-money. If the seller adds in some things I don't need (a metal Seabiscuit bookmark, really?), meh. Whatever.

Right-o. But DVDs can be resold (I've done it). A little book, probably not. Anyone want to buy a Seabiscuit bookmark?

No. The three editions have different contents. The cheaper DVD is (for all practical purposes) the theatrical version of the movie. The BD has the theatrical version of the movie plus a boatload of extras. The $59.95 DVD edition has all the same extras that are on the BD plus the extended TV version of the film.

Excuse me if it's been asked. But has Maitresse been hinted at by Criterion for a Blu-Ray release? I've gone ahead and imported the BFI release, but I was wondering if there have been any hints that a Criterion one may be forthcoming.

Agree. There's nothing quite like it. After you watch it, you're like "Okay, what the HELL was that?" - But in a good way. And it has the second most haunting/mysterious score that I've heard after Drugstore Cowboy.

3 Women is also the movie highest on my all time favorite movies list of the movies that I've discovered/seen the first time on blu ray. I would place it in my top 5. It's amazing that such a masterpiece could stay buried and unknown for decades, but from what I understand, the 2004 Criterion DVD is the first time this movie ever saw a release for home video. I'm so glad that Criterion had Altman do a commentary for the film before he passed away.

I really wish that Altman made more movies like this - his comedies and ensemble movies aren't really my thing. I managed to buy the OOP DVD of Images not too long ago for a relatively reasonable price - another very haunting movie of his.

I sure hope that the Vilmos Zsigmond "something big" picture is for McCabe & Mrs Miller.

Is it a movie that you don't understand a thing, or its plot is understandable enough?
