Also, I think the "something big" from Vilmos Zsigmond turned out to be The Rose.

I honestly can't think of a film I want more right now than McCabe and Mrs. Miller.

Sometimes, it's fun to play, "Count the Criterion actors in this film.", especially if it's decidedly a film that might not ever appear in the Collection.

Case in point, The Delta Force, which I revisited this past weekend.

Robert Forster (Medium Cool) plays a Middle Eastern terrorist who hijacks a passenger plane.
Martin Balsam (12 Angry Men) plays one of the unfortunate passengers on the plane.
Shelley Winters (The Night of the Hunter) plays another one of the unfortunate passengers, and the wife of Balsam's character.
George Kennedy (Charade) plays a priest aboard the plane.
The beautiful Hanna Schygulla (The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant) plays a brave stewardess aboard the plane.
Susan Strasberg (Kapò) plays a passenger aboard the plane.
Lee Marvin (The Killers) plays plays a Colonel who leads The Delta Force in their quest to destroy the terrorist (and who one-ups Chuck Norris on the toughness scale).

This sort of thing can often be even more entertaining than watching the movie itself.

I wonder if fans of Medium Cool back in the day imagined in their wildest dreams that Forster would be playing a Middle Eastern hijacker a couple of decades later.

The plot is definitely understandable. But it has this beautifully surreal and dreamy aura hovering over the plot accompanied by an equally dreamy score. A really hard movie to categorize. If I had to, I would say it's a drama, but it's definitely more than that. Way more.

I'm sure it wasn't what most here were hoping for. Was that picture posted before or after The Rose was announced? I wouldn't mind if McCabe was a WAC release in case my region free Oppo breaks down. But it's probably too big of a title for WAC.

I saw it at Ebert's film fest some 10 years ago.. it played in the last time slot of the day. Nosferatu was right before it. a small theater down the block was playing Shadow of the Vampire, (which I guess now dates this story to 2000,) so Ebert suggested that some might want to go there to see that showing as somewhat of a double feature.

I stayed to watch 3 Women and had a seat in the first row of the balcony at the Virginia Theater in Champaign, IL. I was pretty mesmerized. Immediately after the last shot, many in the audience groaned - perhaps because some of the film is rather vague and maybe because it was after midnight. I had a giddy smile on my face... loved it. Great memory.

edit: should have said "triple.."' or maybe even "quadruple this". I hadn't seen ikeelyou's enthusiastic endorsement. moral of the story: see this movie. not what you'd expect from Altman.

Just an out of the blue wish, but how I'd wish for Criterion to had upgraded King Of Kings 1927 for this Easter!
It seems we're not getting any biblical film apart from Solomon and Sheba from TT.

I was underwhelmed by Robert Altman's Nashville, but I loved his take on The Long Goodbye.

3 Women will probably be in my stack during the next Barnes and Noble sale, because I keep hearing great things.

That film always floors me. It's like pausing Rear Window and taking in set the design. It's amazing what human beings are capable of with art.

It looks so much better than CGI backdrops in my opinion, actually I loved Kubricks use of rear view projection.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has paused Rear Window just to gaze in astonishment and amazement at the art direction and set designs/decorations. I just love that film ... I first saw it on television when I was a kid, and later it was pulled from distribution and unavailable for what seemed like years and years; during that period, I really built it up in my head, and when it was finally re-released, I approached my second viewing with some trepidation. Would it be as good as I remembered? Happily, it was!

By the way, Polaroid ... thanks for those shots from Black Narcissus! I downloaded them so I can enjoy them in the future. Much obliged, my friend.

All of this talk about Rear Window has me incredibly excited to see it in theaters tonight, thanks to TCM. I was lukewarm to it when I saw it a few years ago, but I'm hoping I'll like it better this go around.

3 Women, Nashville, and McCabe and Mrs. Miller are my Top 3 Altman films.

MASH is pretty darn entertaining, as well.

Recently, as my collection expanded, I began to wonder what my 100th Criterion blu-ray might turn out to be. But, as fate would have it, a large lot that I had purchased on the internet arrived today, earlier than expected, sending my total skus from 98 to 104. And so my "landmark" 100th Criterion blu-ray was either Badlands, A Brief History of Time, The Darjeeling Limited, Grey Gardens, Macbeth or The Samurai Trilogy. How's that for an interesting sample of titles that make up the Collection?

I still own an additional 29 skus on DVD that either Criterion needs to upgrade, or I want to upgrade. But I'm very grateful for what I have, and very pleased and proud to have such a nice group of people to discuss them with.

Well, according to this site, my 100th CC BR was Black Orpheus, 200th was The Essential Jacques Demy. My sign is Cancer, Year of the Tiger. My favorite food is Pizza. Turn ons...oops oversharing again.

[Show spoiler]My 3rd decade (exluding kiddie-porn) of answering centerfold questions (sorry).
