Janus Films has unveiled the release of new 4K restorations of Satiyajit Ray’s Bengali-language cinematic milestone The Apu Trilogy. With the original negatives severely damaged in a nitrate fire in 1993, restoration of the trilogy, considered to be perhaps the greatest film in Indian film history, was long thought impossible. However, the damaged negatives were preserved by the Academy Film Archive, and recent technological developments have made restoration — a joint project by the Academy and L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna — possible. Based on the novel duology by author Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay, the trilogy — Pather Panchali (Song Of The Little Road), Aparajito (The Unvanquished) and Apur Sansar (The World Of Apu) — tells the coming of age of a young Bengali boy in the early 20th century. Boasting a score by Ravi Shankar, the films were made on a tiny budget using amateur actors. The films will begin national re-release May 8 at Film Forum in New York City, and May 29 at Landmark’s Nuart Theater in Los Angeles, with a wide release in art house theaters to follow.

I might wait before buying/seeing any of his films lol never seen his stuff and not sure if I will like but the work gone into this seems a worthy reason to buy alone haha

But be nice for it to be my introduction to his films.

do you like lyrical, understated films with great cinematography? simple stories without many fireworks, yet masterfully told?

I don't know about anyone else, but whenever in a movie the character is seeing a movie at a theater, I always look for the title displayed on the marquee. Some recent examples I've noticed are Rififi in Whiplash and Charade in It Follows, just something cool, it always strikes me that those directors are major fans of the classics and maybe even the Criterion collection. Btw, all 4 of those movies come highly recommended.
